A nice relaxing ground for taking a walk in between studies and work. I still return here when I have a chance having graduated many years ago.

The U of G Arboretum is filled with trails, ponds, gardens - something for everyone. The bird lover delights at seeing so many species in one area. You round a corner on a trail and a deer is nibbling on grasses nearby. Rabbits hop across the fields. The birdhouses are filled with young swallows and bluebirds. Nature is all around... and if you want a different look - wander through the manicured gardens, the Japanese garden and Koi pond or the Canadian trees in their own specially marked area.

All in all very disappointing. if you want to only have trails to walk, there's plenty of them. However if you're looking for gardens and well maintained displays you'll be disappointed. We checked out the Kiosk map at the SW entrance to show where the different gardens were. We followed the Ivey Trail up to the "Rose Collection". We could have walked right by the rose garden. There was 1 single branch sticking out of a bed of weeds If you looked really closely you could see the outlines where several garden beds had been. All of the benches within much of the Arboretum were covered in moss & rotting. The Italian Garden was partially maintained but the water feature was not on. The Japanese Garden was the best maintained. Visited the "Native Trees of Ontario" & walked back along the "Memorial Trail".
All in all very disappointed given that Guelph University is known for its Agricultural programs.

I recommend picking up a map of the park at the main Kiosk during business hours. Most of the map boxes on the trails were empty when we were there.
Very well maintained site. Main trails are wide and flat with loose gravel or earth, some grass trails as well. Very easy walking. There is unfortunately some road noise...you forget you are still in the city until you hear it.
Lots of benches to enjoy. Open areas to picnic on the grass if you like. Didn't see hardly any garbage...most people are respectful. However there were a couple that didn't pick up after their dogs so watch where you step. Not everyone is considerate.
Markers for a lot of the trees and foliage.
Disc golf course along the trail.
And you can run on the non-forested trails.

My friend and I went to the Arboretum for the first time yesterday - we had no idea how large this place was (410 acres). Good map at the entrance but that was pretty well it. Two washrooms in the entire complex and we made our way to the Welcome Centre to use the washroom and it was closed - we never did find the other washroom. The place is NOT well marked and unless you had a photographic memory you had virtually no idea where you were or where you were heading. More signage is definitely needed - the washrooms should be open all the time - I'm a senior and this made it difficult. Again the place is beautiful - but the services and signage absolutely need more work.

The Guelph Arboretum is a great place to take a leisuerly stroll and connect with nature. Whether you have 30 minutes or hours to spend, there are trails, gardens and pathways that will provide you with a lovely experience.
If you are looking to get off the beaten path a bit more than the most popular trails at the Arboretum, try Victoria Wood - an old growth forest right here in the city. Stunning for its show of trilliums in May.

We recently moved to Guelph and one of the main reasons we chose our specific location was its proximity to the "Arboretum". Over the fifteen year period that our daughters attended the University of Guelph, my wife and I almost always found time to visit the Arboretum whenever we came to town for a visit.
No matter what season there is always a kaleidoscope of colours and textures to please the senses. We particularly enjoy the Japanese Zen Garden and the English Rose garden. Although expansive, their are benches strategically placed to stop, rest and absorb the sounds and beauty of nature.
For anyone who enjoys a walk in nature, in an easily accessible location, a visit to the Arboretum is sure to please.

The University of Guelph's Arboretum is a lovely location to visit at any time of the year. Its groomed trails are great for walking in the summer or cross country skiing in the winter. Strategically placed signs identify most trees and trails. The Arboretum Centre is used extensively for special events and romantic occasions such as weddings and anniversaries. The University's Food Services always provide outstanding meals when they are required.
During the winter one can sit for hours watching the numerous birds at a number of feeders in various locations. The University of Guelph has provided an excellent free attraction that is widely used and appreciated by faculty, students, and the citizens of Guelph. Given its size and various attractions, it is worth visiting often.

I agree with some of the reviewers about access to public facilities when nature calls especially for females, and better marking on trails as it is easy to lose one's bearings on such a large acreage of University gardens. Kudos to the maintenance workers who take pride in their gardening skills.
