- Matt T11 contributionsWell worth a visitWe visited during the Victorian Christmas display and found it worth a trip. Our guide was very knowledgeable, giving us insight into the history of the castle and answering all questions. I didn't know much about the castle when I booked, but with a 2-day stay in Hamilton this was well worth the time. Recommended!Thank you for your response. We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed your visit with us, and learned something too.Written June 15, 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2022Written January 2, 2023
- Vst448Toronto, Canada140 contributionsIf you love history, this site is for you. You must go !First of all, this is not a "castle". Someone decided to attract travellers. This is just a big house without any walls and towers. Also this is not Versallis, but Canada is not France. LOL. We liked this place, because they created very good atmosphere of XIX century. A guide Natali had old-fashion dressing. It was so amazing. :-) When I visit historical sites,I always have interest to ordinary things, not fancy sides.I mean that I want to know how people lived in that period.I want to see washrooms, bathrooms, rooms of housekeepers, laundry, kitchen for cooking, storages etc. We could see this side of daily life in XIX century. I am sure that children cannot value this house. I'd recommend to read history and have imagination about that period, before visiting this site.Thank you for your response! Dundurn has been called a "castle" since it was built in the 1830s. At that time it was the largest home in Hamilton and the citizens of that time started referring to it as a "castle" that nickname never went away, so Hamiltonians still call it a Castle today. We're happy to hear that you enjoyed your tour of the museum, it's a great way to see the difference between the way the family lived and the way their servants did.Written June 15, 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited February 2023Written February 15, 2023
- Ivan BAbergavenny, United Kingdom448 contributionsGood trip well worth the entrance feeTo view the internal aspects of the house/castle it was always going to be beneficial with a guide, and there are tours every half hour. The guide we had was very informative and answered all the questions from the group we went with. My wife and I are seasoned national trust members and are used to “seeing” all the items of interest as we go round the house, and the entrance price was well worth it as we started outside and went to the “upstairs” accommodation before going to the “downstairs” rooms. A special little talk by the lady cook who gave us a treat from the garden produce, thank you it was lovely.Thank you for your response. A must see place to visit in Hamilton. It was one of the best restorations of 18th century buildings we have ever been to.

Best guides ever. The home is now on my all-time top 5 as far as how amazing the layout is. Very unique. We had to wait an hour before our tour. The time flew by when we went on an AllTrails 1/2 mile loop around the grounds. Loved the Kitchen Garden. Kids ate some fresh fruits & veggies. We had fun trying on old military costumes in the military building. A great family day. Kids bonded over good laughs in this back-in-time ambiance.

This is one of the beautiful hidden gems of Hamilton, I love taking my son and my elderly clients here, gives you such an appreciation of what they had to go through in the past to get to the point they did, I won’t give everything away.

We were driving to Toronto from Niagara Falls and needed an interesting activity to break up the drive. My wife found this and we got on a tour with Thiona, who did a great job guiding us and passing on historical info.
I attached various pictures of entry signs, front of the Chateau, and several rooms inside.
We also went through the military museum inna separate building on the property that was self guided and interesting too.

Hello.
We are interested in the death and mourning traditions tour at Dundurn Castle in February, but would like to know what's included in the $40 fee.
Would you be able to provide more information as we cannot find any on the Haunted Hamilton website. We'd be very disappointed to miss this unique event.
Thank you!
Catherine Schnurr
Hamilton, Canada
Sorry for the delay in responding to your question.
Our Death and Dying tour discusses mourning rituals and beliefs in the Victorian time period. There will be some information that relates directly to the family members that lived at Dundurn and some information that is more general to the time period. Please let me know if you still have questions. Tickets do need to be purchased through the Haunted Hamilton website. Thank you.
Is it cheaper/free if you chose to not to do a guided tour?
Catherine Schnurr
Hamilton, Canada
Thank you for your inquiry. In order to see Dundurn Castle it is by guided tour only. There are only a few days a year where we allow visitors into the museum without a tour guide. These days are our Christmas open house, which falls on the last Sunday of November, and during Doors Open Hamilton, which falls on the first weekend in May. On these occasions admission is free.

Hi
I saw on the website that they are open Sunday's from noon to 4pm. Do you have to make a reservation to be part of a tour?
What does it cost?
Thanks so much
Christine

Hamilton, Canada
You do not need to make a reservation. Our tours start at the gift shop every 20-30 minutes depending on the time of year. There are days where we get busy and our tours do sell out so if you want to guarantee a certain tour time you can purchase tickets online through our website ahead of time. The price of an adult ticket is $12.00
Can we take photos on the outside without a photography permit if it’s just 2 people for personal hobby?
Catherine Schnurr
Hamilton, Canada
Hello! Thank you for you inquiry. You can take personal pictures outside on our grounds without needing a permit if you have less than 10 people on site with you. It's only when you have 10 people or more that you require a permit.

How much is the admission and is it a good place to go? Are they open on Monday? I have heard yes, and no, so i am confused. Thanks in advance!

Child (6-12): $6.50
Children 5 and under are free.
Family (2 adults and any number of dependent children 6-17): $32.00.

You do not have to pre purchase your tickets. Just visit during the open hours which is Tuesday to Sunday from 12pm to 4pm and the gift shop clerk will place you on the first available guided tour.

Is the kitchen garden still being worked the second week of August? We would be visiting at that time and since the garden is mentioned as being worth the trip, I wondered. How large is the garden also?
FrancaHicks

The only day it is closed is Mondays.
