- Demos JHamilton, Canada59 contributionsA great place to visit with out-of-town familyWe've lived in Hamilton since 2007, and while our kids have been to Dundurn Castle on school field trips, we never visited until this past December. My siblings and their families were in town over the holidays, and we chose this over the Royal Botanical Gardens for a visit. We were pleasantly surprised by how great the experience was. Our tour guide was dressed in period clothing, and was engaging and knowledgeable. I would suggest visiting on a misty, overcast day - somehow, it added to the charm, and made it feel as though we'd stepped back in time.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten March 31, 2024
- Sharon95GCPSaint Charles, Missouri345 contributionsBelieve it or not--how could they do that?Get there early. Last tour at 3 finishes as the extras close for the day at 4. Very interesting, loved the floating staircase and all the history of the times. The bathtubs were a hoot and you get a sample from the kitchen! Even my 19 & 21 year old sons enjoyed it.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten June 3, 2024
- maryhearPowell, Tennessee84 contributionsWorth a visitNot a castle as such, but a large home built in Hamilton, Ontario. The guides were dressed in period dress, which was a nice touch. The tour included the main rooms for visitors on the main level; bedrooms and sitting rooms for the family on the upper level; and kitchen, pantry, storage rooms, and laundry in the basement level. Lots of stairs, but the house was touted as having several conveniences that were very modern for the time period it was built, one of which was flushing toilets. There were other attractions on the grounds, including a military museum, but we did not have time to view it on this trip.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten August 9, 2024
- Alicia MMonticello, Minnesota125 contributionsHuge houseWhile not technically a castle this is an absolutely huge house. It isn’t as opulent as you might think on the inside but that is because the family ended up not being as wealthy as they hoped they would be. The guide was informative and clearly knowledgeable about the site. The gift shop is very nice and the staff was kind. Parking is free and is just above the house grounds.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten August 21, 2024
- Domenic RGuelph, Canada56 contributionsGreat fun for a day! This was truly a fun day and close to home. Our guide Cameron was fantastic. He played the role of a footsman so very well and we felt pulled back in time. No questions were too hard. So interesting to see how life was back in the 1800s up close. The grounds are beautiful and we were fortunate to see 2 wedding parties take photos.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten August 30, 2024
- NorthStar177739243331 contributionAn Overdue VisitMy sister and I who were born and bred in Hamilton over 80 years ago had never visited Dundurn Castle and used this family visit to Burlington to see this historic place. It is a beautiful and tasteful site in Victorian style and the decor and furnishings seemed accurate to the period. We enjoyed our tour guide's descriptions . She told us how the wallpaper was taken from the original and reprinted and then reapplied to the walls. Everything was beautiful. We were delighted to learn about the McNab family and to finally visit this immensely important part of Hamilton's history.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten September 28, 2024

Reasonable admission prices. I definitely recommend participating in the free guided tour, which I believe runs every half hour. I was lucky enough to arrive at the gift shop just as a tour was scheduled and was the only tourist at the time, so I got to ask a lot of questions without being annoying - at least to other tourists. The tour guide was well-versed in the property's history and was very helpful with my questions - even going out of her way to include the more specialized interpreters (e.g. kitchen staff).
The property's history isn't as extensive as Europeans' would be accustomed to, but is a good glimpse into the ate eighteenth to early nineteenth centuries of Canadian life. Of course, the property and it's occupants were involved in some of the events of the War of 1812, but Dundurn castle also gives you a very good idea of the "upstairs/downstairs" dynamic prevalent at the time, even in the British colonies. The war museum is quite small, but has good displays of historical military objects and weaponry, particularly focused on the War of 1812. There is also a very interesting working garden that includes only plants and vegetables that would have been grown at the time that Dundurn was occupied.
Dundurn castle is also a very popular wedding venue, so expect to see a lot of tuxedos and bridesmaid's dresses even in cold weather.

Thank you for your review of Dundurn Castle.
We offer admission by guided tour only, so the tour itself is not free, it is what you are paying for with your admission cost. It does include a pass to the Hamilton Military Museum as well.
We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your tour. Our "castle" is small and our history is short compared to Europe, because our country is younger, but it is still a rich history with many stories to share.

I loved Dundurn Castle, I went there for a 5th grade trip back in 2012. The tour guide our class had was very nice and knowledgeable about everything, he answered my classmate's questions with a nice smile as well. My favorite part about this trip was getting to look at the old historic paintings on the walls, one of my classmates said that it looked as if the eyes on one of the paintings were following her and our tour guide responded to her jokingly, "this is their house after all, they can stare at you if they want". 10/10 would recommend Dundrun Castle to anyone who is interested, I have not been there since I went with my 5th grade class almost 10 years ago, but I would really like to visit Dundurn Castle again soon!

To view the internal aspects of the house/castle it was always going to be beneficial with a guide, and there are tours every half hour. The guide we had was very informative and answered all the questions from the group we went with. My wife and I are seasoned national trust members and are used to “seeing” all the items of interest as we go round the house, and the entrance price was well worth it as we started outside and went to the “upstairs” accommodation before going to the “downstairs” rooms. A special little talk by the lady cook who gave us a treat from the garden produce, thank you it was lovely.

A friend and I went today for a tour for our birhdays... it was a wonderful experience! Our tour guide had lots of information to share about the history of the building and the MacNab family. The castle itself is well maintained and given its' age it is in really good shape. The little shortbread square at the end of the tour was a nice touch and it was nice to see that they were concerned with allergies and dietary restrictions. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to learn a little more about our city and our history.

We were driving to Toronto from Niagara Falls and needed an interesting activity to break up the drive. My wife found this and we got on a tour with Thiona, who did a great job guiding us and passing on historical info.
I attached various pictures of entry signs, front of the Chateau, and several rooms inside.
We also went through the military museum inna separate building on the property that was self guided and interesting too.

Spectacular! Our guide was very knowledgeable and took the time to answer all our numerous questions. Rich houses are always interesting but this property shows the servants quarter's and this is fascinating!
Understanding the roles of all staff and how they went about to do their job, seeing the kitchen, the ice vault, the scullery, the laundry, etc. Makes us appreciate today’s comfort!

Thank you so much for your response! We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed your visit with us. We love that we can share the basement of the house with our visitors so that they may see how both sides lived. We are also very grateful that we have modern comforts to help us do chores that the servants needed more time and energy to complete!

I have honestly never had as good of a tour as the Christmas at Dunduran with Alex. He was phenomenal, great pace, amazing knowledge of the times as well as a real knack for the small details often missed during these tours. The residence is in amazing shape and has a real energy to it. Would highly recomend a visit. Thank you for a great experience.

A historic site in the city of Hamilton, Canada, shows a little of the colonial period and when there were disputes with the United States. Behind the castle there is a beautiful view of a lake and it seems to be an excellent place for families to have picnics, when the weather is more favorable. There is little signage at the site regarding entry to the castle and there should be more historical information about it.

Whilst staying in Hamilton for 2 weeks I wanted to visit some local historic sites and Dundurn proved to be fantastic. Filled with amazing colonial history and the staff were brilliant. There is also a small military museum adjacent to the museum which houses interesting displays on local battles and buildings.

We visited during the Victorian Christmas display and found it worth a trip. Our guide was very knowledgeable, giving us insight into the history of the castle and answering all questions. I didn't know much about the castle when I booked, but with a 2-day stay in Hamilton this was well worth the time. Recommended!

Hello.
We are interested in the death and mourning traditions tour at Dundurn Castle in February, but would like to know what's included in the $40 fee.
Would you be able to provide more information as we cannot find any on the Haunted Hamilton website. We'd be very disappointed to miss this unique event.
Thank you!

Sorry for the delay in responding to your question.
Our Death and Dying tour discusses mourning rituals and beliefs in the Victorian time period. There will be some information that relates directly to the family members that lived at Dundurn and some information that is more general to the time period. Please let me know if you still have questions. Tickets do need to be purchased through the Haunted Hamilton website. Thank you.

Thank you for your inquiry. In order to see Dundurn Castle it is by guided tour only. There are only a few days a year where we allow visitors into the museum without a tour guide. These days are our Christmas open house, which falls on the last Sunday of November, and during Doors Open Hamilton, which falls on the first weekend in May. On these occasions admission is free.

Hi
I saw on the website that they are open Sunday's from noon to 4pm. Do you have to make a reservation to be part of a tour?
What does it cost?
Thanks so much
