The decor is the best part. Service was very friendly and fast. Unfortunately food and drink was just okay. I was hoping for more.

First time we have been to the Toucan in years. It's a good local tavern to meet up with people for a drink or two or... Close to Confederation Basin you can enjoy the sites and take a nice walk around downtown Kingston. Worth dropping in.

If you are looking for a home away from home this is the place, A very small bar with limited seating makes it an intimate experience.

I visited this bar last night with a friend, and unfortunately, our experience was far from pleasant. Upon arriving, we were greeted by a blonde woman (who we later found out was a manager) in a way that felt cold and unwelcoming. After seeing us exit my car, her first question to my friend was: "Do you intend to drink and drive?" She then asked me the same. I responded that I'm planning to have a single glass of beer.
Once inside, we noticed that she was talking to all the staff around us where we sat, pointing at us, which made us feel uncomfortable and singled out for reasons we didn’t understand. When we tried to order a pitcher of beer, the bartender informed us that we weren’t allowed to order it, and that the manager had set limits on what both of us could drink, which is one glass of beer each.
While I don't blame the bartender, as he was simply following instructions, the entire situation felt insulting to my intelligence and disrespectful. My friend and I couldn't help but feel discriminated against. Even if the manager had concerns about drinking and driving, her actions were heavy-handed and illogical. She didn't take into account that one of us would not be driving OR that we could leave the car overnight OR we could arrange with someone else for bringing the car back home or whatever other scenario as adults who can handle such situations (I'm 45 actually).
Her approach felt more like an assumption of irresponsibility rather than reasonable management, and it left us feeling insulted. The situation could have been handled with more professionalism, and I believe an apology is in order.

I found myself in Kingston on a Monday night, with nothing to do. As per usual, I checked online to see if there was any live music playing in town. Being a Monday - I wasn't hopeful. One site (The Toucan) listed live music till 2 AM. I went down for some supper and beer - and to listen to what the band was up to.
Well - let me tell you - I was blown out of the water by this young band, Rocket Surgery, headed up by Rueben deGroot. I was half expecting to hear some sorry cover band, doing their bad renditions of some old, dusty, CCR songs, but these guys weren't having any of that. Now, let me say that if you're not into new, intelligent, somewhat complex-but still solid music, this band isn't for you. On the other hand, if you're into fresh, upbeat, new, progressive music - this band is what you're looking for.
I'd say that most, if not all of their music was original. I think I counted 5 or 6 people on stage, which really gave the music a depth of sound. The band was tight yet playful and they went on for three sets, playing until 2 AM. I was thinking I'd leave after the second set was over, but I couldn't draw myself away and stayed until the bitter end.
I should mention something about the venue. I don't really recall what I ate, but it was good and the beer selection was good as well. My server was great - attentive but not prodding.
Back to the band. I spoke with Rueben about their music. He informed me that they play The Toucan every Monday night - and that's about all. I questioned why, with so much talent, they didn't move on to bigger and better. Family, children and a full time job were the response.
People - if you want to see the best band that no one knows of - go down to The Toucan on a Monday and be prepared to have your socks removed.

Very tasty and crispy battered Fish and Chips. Fries and coleslaw were also excellent as well. Service was very good and prices were reasonable. The Guinness on tap was delicious!

If you like no food, attitude from hell and indignant attitudes then you will tip well here. Place is going down hill. Careful of the “waitress”- she seems to be drinking more than the alcoholics. Any reasonable request will be met with a moody response. Should be on a reality show- Pubs from Hell!

Went on 12 Oct for a live music event they had posted on Facebook for 8pm. Showed up and ordered a beer. By 8:20pm I asked server when the music was starting and they said not until 1030, I showed her where they had it listed on the Facebook page as 1030 and she said they don’t list the correct times. Don’t bother going here for a specific event because they don’t seem to care about your time or about being truthful in their advertising. Don’t recommend going here. There’s better options in Kingston that aren’t so callus in wasting customers time or in lying to them.

Beware. This establishment does NOT accept the City's VISA gift card! We only found out by asking- luckily before we ordered!

We've eaten here a number of times, nice pub food but wish they would bring back the steak and kidney pie. The pub needs to be updated with a deep cleaning and new paint and carpeting.
