You will most likely have to go next to the falls to get a good view of the fireworks.

I would advise not to spend any nights in Buffalo. There isn’t much to do aside from the Falls. Do two nights in the Canadian side instead. You should plan on driving through Niagara on the Lake if you can to get to... More

It will be very cold there and due to the winter time, The Maid of Mist boat ride will not run in January. The boat only run from April to October. Check their website before you go, it’s useful. Hope it helps !
