Had a fantastic tasting experience with Brent with 5 friends. He was very professional and knowledgable. He was by far the best wine consultant of all the wineries we visited.

Big Head's new facility will be impressive once it is finished. The tasting area is well-setup, bright, and professional, but of course, they've lost the "quaintness" of the former location. Our server was excellent -- well-informed and willing to discuss the wines.

My big complaint is the trend in Niagara to charge high prices for tastings and not rebate the cost into any purchases. This is a prevalent issue across the region now and I'm sure it's part of the recovery from COVID.

We found the greeting distasteful with an upfront charge of $15 for tasting when we walked in the door. The wines at Big Head are interesting, but this smacks of double-dipping to me. If they need to charge due to the recovery, then at least give some discount on a purchase. Niagara/Ontario wine is generally over-priced to start with due to our friends at the big monopoly, LCBO, but this just adds to the problem. What this charging will do in effect is stop people from trying new places, new wineries, because they will have to be more selective. We would not have found Big Head originally without the opportunity to take a chance on a small winery. I really don't mind the fee and would expect to be charged if I'm not purchasing -- charge the partyers (not judging) and the limo tours, and not the people really interested in your wines.

Big Head's charge of $15 for four tastings was on the lower end of what we experienced this weekend and would not be unreasonable if it resulted in a discounted purchase.

The Chenin Blanc select is excellent by the way.

Spent a great time with Chris as he graciously explained the wines to us and walked us through some great recommendations. Avoid the Peller, Gretzky, Trius trio and come here! Or better yet, try one of those them come here and appreciate a true experience.

Talk to anyone knowledgable about the wine scene near Niagara on the Lake, ask about wineries with big reds, and three names consistently come up. One of these names is Big Head winery, and it was a winery that I had never visited. Made a reservation for a Tuesday morning [reservations, according to the website, are mandatory…], and spent almost an entire hour with the very knowledgeable winery host. The host clearly knew his wines and winemakers…and did a great job of finding wines that would match up with what we were looking for. And providing ideas for one or two other wineries to visit, that were not familiar with!

The reds were excellent, particularly the Cab Franc, although I did enjoy the one white (Pinot Gris) that I tried. This is not a “tour bus” kinda place…but if you have a serious interest in Ontario wines, I would strongly recommend a visit. But make a reservation-:)

This is a small winery with some very interesting wines. We had an early reservation and spent almost two hours tasting and talking with Chris, one of the hosts. The tasting room is relatively new with concrete vessels and terracotta amphoras for storing the wines (which are not yet in the new location.). The staff were gracious, and the some of the wines were absolutely delicious. We were sorry that as we were flying home with carry-on luggage we couldn't bring any home with us.

We walked in to their new not yet complete store, there was only one couple doing a tasting- have been to their old location 2 times in previous years. The young lady told us they were booked solid and no available tasting. She was not friendly or welcoming. I probably would have purchased a few bottles as I know the wine- but felt so turned off ! The place was empty- it was 2:30 on a Thursday! Really? I guess that is what success does to people. Plenty if other wineries that treat their customers with respect. Shame on you .

We arrived within half an hour of closing and clearly sensed that the hostess was not thrilled to have us tasting. However, the server (possibly the owner? not certain) was extremely pleasant as he served our tasting and shared information about the wines. The new facility is beautiful and the wine, as always, is excellent. Prices are slightly more than some other local wineries but the product is worth it!

While I have had the pleasure of visiting Niagara-on-the-Lake twice in the last half decade with many satisfying stops at a number of fine wineries, one of the most impressive and new favorite is Big Head!
The unique and interesting tasting room is right next to the vineyards with a small parking lot for your convenience. Once inside, there are a number of semi private tasting areas to experience their fine wines.
We had the pleasure of being with Chris whose knowledge, enthusiasm and care made our visit worthwhile. We tried both whites and red’s, some made with the Appasimento method of drying out the grapes for more body, flavor and complexity. We purchased four bottles, two whites and two reds, enjoyed one white with friends while on vacation and look forward to sharing the others in the near future. Since they are a small product facility, some of their wines are priced higher than the large scale wineries nearby, but the quality warrants the price and your consideration. When in NOTL, please add Big Head Winery to your itinerary and you won’t be disappointed! Very Highly Recommended!
