The museum itself is very small but had a few interesting artifacts and the staff were friendly and welcoming.

The gift shop is small but sensibly priced. We got an ice cream and sat by the locks watching the world go by.

Nice if you are passing but I wouldn't go out of your way to visit.

What a gem! The first thing I noticed is there is ramp for access - as someone in a wheelchair, I have struggled in Ottawa. The museum is also easy to get around. I noticed I could read all the information as well. The elevator was simple and easy to use. I couldn't access the top floor; this was an issue with using a nearly 200 year old original stone house, which was not built for a elevator. The museum had a great plan in place: a 3D, 360 view of the entire top floor! There was a dedicated computer for this, with great graphics. I could see everything that was upstairs; it was a great solution. The staff were super friendly as well. It is a wonderful introduction to the start of Ottawa, made accessible to wheelies.

We tried several times and only found this open once and they were about to close. It is scheduled to be open very often and it is not open even when it is supposed to be. I ran into some locals who had been trying for yrs to see this museum and never found it open.

the museum is cute and interesting. Very well curated for what it is. Watch the locks fill and unfill as the boats move through. - But I go here to watch the International Fireworks Competitions... Best Seat in the City.- Go early - bring a chair and pack or buy a supper there - So much Fun!

If you want to learn about Rideau Canal and early downtown Ottawa, then this is the place to be! You learn all about the creation of the canal by Colonel John By, and is a great place for kids as well.

A small museum in one of the oldest remaining Ottawa stone buildings near the lower locks of the Rideau Canal. Admission is very inexpensive. The history you see and learn is quite interesting, but made even more so during an Ottawa Haunted Walk (in October each year) when a crib may move as you walk by and/or other such fun/scary add-ons.

It was nice to go in, unfortunately they were renovating that day we got there and the second part of the building was close. There is a small entrance free to go inside , but since we only looked at the bottom first floor , we did not have to pay . We ended up getting some snacks and just looking and reading at some of the information on the first floor.
Good place to also stop by before we went on our river cruise .

|We saw this as part of the ghost tour and it was very unsettling - a very old museum that tells the story of how Ottawa went from a swamp to a capitol city.
