If you want to learn about Rideau Canal and early downtown Ottawa, then this is the place to be! You learn all about the creation of the canal by Colonel John By, and is a great place for kids as well.

A small museum in one of the oldest remaining Ottawa stone buildings near the lower locks of the Rideau Canal. Admission is very inexpensive. The history you see and learn is quite interesting, but made even more so during an Ottawa Haunted Walk (in October each year) when a crib may move as you walk by and/or other such fun/scary add-ons.

It was nice to go in, unfortunately they were renovating that day we got there and the second part of the building was close. There is a small entrance free to go inside , but since we only looked at the bottom first floor , we did not have to pay . We ended up getting some snacks and just looking and reading at some of the information on the first floor.
Good place to also stop by before we went on our river cruise .

|We saw this as part of the ghost tour and it was very unsettling - a very old museum that tells the story of how Ottawa went from a swamp to a capitol city.

Don't miss this museum when walking the Rideau Canal. In very good shape, even the building is old but well preserved.

The museum is very interesting and tells the story of the building of the canal and the area. For 2 dollars Canadian it is value for money. Take in the Locks while you are there. Fascinating to watch the boats navigating the Locks system. The lock gates are all hand operated so on a very hot day the lock attendants worked extremely hard. A great place to stroll down to the river.

The Bytown Museum tells the history of the city of Ottawa from its earliest days in a three-storey building known as the Commissariat adjoining the locks on the Rideau Canal dating from the early nineteenth century when it was used as a storehouse by those constructing the canal. There is a cafe on the ground floor and currently an exhibition about Canada’s contribution to the Boer War. Photographs showing the construction of the Parliament buildings are of particular interest.

The museum is tucked in by the canal, between the East Block and the Chateau Laurier, so easy to get to when touring downtown. You can’t beat the value, with an admission of $2, including audio guide. The guide is a great summary of the history of Ottawa.
