I was fortunate to attend the Indigenous History Walking Tour as part of my workplace's efforts to recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Brian's tour exceeded my expectations from beginning to end. It was highly informative and thought provoking. The 3 hours flew by! I would highly recommend the tour to anyone and would definitely consider taking other tours offered by Brian. I admire and respect his socialist and activist views. His opinions on the subject matter were evident but not overwhelming and intimidating. Excellent presentation!

My partner and I took the protest tour with Brian. He was an encyclopedia of knowledge and it was great to hear about his personal experiences/recounts of some of the important protests that have taken place in Ottawa. We always try to learn the "real" (not sanitized/propagandized) history of the places we travel and we are so happy to have gained insight into the history of Canada and of Ottawa. Would recommend this tour to anyone interested in not just the history but ensuring it's not forgotten for future generations of protestors :)

This was a great introduction to a history of social justice movements in Ottawa! I found it particularly useful that our tour guide had various maps and photos/illustrations of the area that we could compare to what we could see now. It took longer than I expected but fortunately, we spent some time sitting away from the sun and I had some snacks which were useful.

It was such a prolific memorable walking tour beside the CCLR17. I enjoyed narrating beside the historical monuments and locations and learned a lot. It was a perfect idea that our leader (Brian) was carrying a binder full of historical pictures and showing us while explaining the historical facts and events. Besides, he finally handed us a bunch of printed information about what he had already mentioned so that we synthesize the provided information later.

I had the pleasure of taking the Lowertown tour with Brian. Brian is erudite, and provides a unique perspective on the history of Ottawa that you are unlikely to learn in any publication. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and I am looking forward to experiencing the other tours when I return to Ottawa.

Thanks for your generous comments. It's always a pleasure to discuss local history with people who have lived in Ottawa but haven't had the opportunity to read or hear about all the events and people that have been air-brushed out of most accounts of the city's history. I look forward to seeing you again.

We did two People’s History tours while in Ottawa last week. The first afternoon we did the Protest tour and the next morning we did the Lowertown tour. Through these walks, we gained a deeper insight in Ottawa’s past and present, as well as the diverse peoples who contributed to the making of the city and nation. If you are a history buff, you definitely want to take these tours. Brian, the guide, has an encyclopedic knowledge of the names and dates, as well as a real knack for placing the events in a broader social and political context. Thanks for a great experience that enriched our visit!

Thanks for the review. Doing two tours with the same group within a 24 hour period provided a unique opportunity for extended discussion. And of course, context is everything. Not just the broader context of the historical events under discussion, but also the present-day circumstances of the tour participants. In this case, a tour involving both American visitors and Ottawa residents, a certain amount of 'translation' of Canadian context into terms more meaningful for Americans was required. That is always a welcome and exciting challenge for me as a tour guide.

Horrible tour. The guide went into too much detail and used his binder to show us pictures more than taking us to historical places. Twice he just brought us to a wall of a building and spent endless time talking about so many different subjects that didn't really relate to the building. It start at 6 pm and was supposed to be 1.5 hours. I left at 8:15 (I hadn't had supper yet) and he was still talking at one spot for 25 minutes. I was told the tour didn't end until past 9 pm. I only saw two statues, the lift locks, and two stone walls of buildings for the over 2 hours I spent on the tour!

I'm sorry your experience did not meet your expectations. Your tour was contracted by the organization you belong to. They scheduled the time and were fully aware of the duration of the tour. Somehow, that information does not seem to have been communicated to you. You are the first dissatisfied tour participant I've had in almost a decade of operation. If you had personally paid the fee for the tour, I would offer you a refund. Several times I've told people taking one of my tours there was no need to pay if they did not believe they got their money's worth. I've never had any takers.

I took the “Indigenous Peoples and Colonialism” tour with Brian. It was a terribly smoggy day (due to the wildfire) and I was the only one to take the tour, but I feel so lucky that I got to have a private tour.

The tour was full of information I didn’t know. Brian is like an enciclopedia! I was able to ask so many questions that I had and came to mind during the tour.

I have taken several walking tours in Canada and the US but this was the most informative and illuminating experience I’ve ever had.
Brian himself was such a wonderful kind and knowledgeable person to meet too.

Thanks for those wonderful comments. I have done some large tours (the largest was about 125 people), many medium to small sized tours (7-15 people) and even a few solo tours with a single person. Some of the single person tours, like yours, have been truly memorable. In your case, the tour became an occasion not only to discuss the history at hand -- Indigenous peoples and colonialism -- but also your personal experiences with racism, your self-perceptions, and your political beliefs. For me, it was a rare privilege to be invited to assist in your political self-exploration.

Brian is a wealth of knowledge. We did a private Indigenous/decolonizing walking tour, and Brian walked us through the history of the Algonquin peoples, and into contemporary times, with specific focus on historical events around the area that is now known as Ottawa. His background working as an academic, with the federal government, and his passion for social justice, offered a breath of knowledge that can support anyone looking to better understand the socio-political-historical context that has led to the inequities we see today.

Brian is a phenomenal historian and storyteller!

On the "Indigenous Peoples and Colonialism in the History of Canada’s Capital" tour, Brian captivated our group with forgotten stories of Canada's past and exposed the appalling history behind some of Ottawa's famous monuments and statues.

The tour covered events from the 18th century to today, including indigenous tragedies and triumphs. This is definitely a tour I recommend to Ottawa residents and all those who want to revisit Canadian history through an inquisitive lens.
