The Valiants Memorial in downtown Ottawa, is a collection of nine busts and five statues of individuals who have played a role in major conflicts throughout Canada’s history.
The monument pays tribute to 14 men and women chosen for their heroism, and their contribution in critical moments in Canada’s military history.
It is quite a moving memorial and certainly worth a visit.

The Valiants Memorial is a fairly new exhibit that can be found beside the National War Memorial. It depicts fourteen figures found in Canada’s military history from New France to World War II. They are life-size statues or busts and each has a brief description of their contribution to the history of Canada. They include: Louis de Buade de Frontenac, John Butler, Isaac Brock, Laura Secord to name a few. Four Canadian Victoria Cross recipients are also featured.

The Memorial takes a large space at the corner of Confederation Square. It is a collection of busts and statues and is dedicated to 14 people who have played important roles in Canada’s major conflicts - French Regime (1534–1763), American Revolution (1775–1783), War of 1812 (1812–1815), WWI and WWII.

Created by Marlene Hilton Moore and John McEwan in 2006, the Valiants Memorial is composed of nine bronze busts and five bronze statues of individuals who’ve played essential roles in various conflicts throughout Canada’s rich history. I say it’s ambitious in the title of my review because it covers a period of over 350 years; thus, the figures represented are like stones skipping across the waters of history. Specifically, the monument covers the following major periods: The French Regime (1534-1763); the American Revolution (1775-83); the War of 1812 (1812-14); World War I (1914-18); and, World War II (1939-45). That’s a lot of ground and one does wonder how the figures were selected for inclusion in the monument.
In any event, visiting this monument was a proverbial piece of cake because it was quite literally across the street from our hotel, and near Canada’s National War Memorial (our intended destination). As we ambled about the busts and statues I couldn’t help but feel a little inept. Of the fourteen figures depicted, I was only readily able to identify three of them – Comte de Frontenac, John Butler and Isaac Brock. Nevertheless, if you’re mostly ignorant about these historic figures (like me), don’t worry! Each statue and bust has a short information plaque beside it, explaining his or her importance to Canada’s military history.
I think one could easily spend an hour or so wandering around the square and reading up on these important figures; however, we were only here for a brief time on account of a busy schedule. One final note: I appreciate the accuracy that went into each of the fourteen figures in terms of facial detail and clothing specific to the period they represent. In this way, Moore and McEwan are able to create a rich and dynamic space in which our often overlooked military history comes alive and encourages one to read and learn about it. These may be figures from an increasingly distant past but, together, they make up a rich and evolving tapestry representing not just military moments, but cultural and social values as well.

These are a collection of small statues, commemorating some of Canada’s heroes, it is just across the road from he War Memorial and easy to find, and well worth a look.

The Valiants include General Crerar, WWll, to Laura Secord, and Hampton Gray! These sculptures depict Valiant Men and women including Military Nurses, to front line men and women who gave the Ultimate Sacrifice! To look, pause, read and remember, bring history to life! A beautiful depiction in Sculpture directly near to National War Memorial!
