Okay visit, but should time cleaning around viewing schedule.
We were lucky enough to be able to view a freighter in the lock with a second waiting to enter from the other direction. Upon our arrival, we were told that at 2:30, the museum and viewing facility would close for cleaning until 3:00. (Covid 19) The staff at the door told us two ships were coming in at 2:18 and 2:19. First that’s not possible because one takes a good 30-45 minutes to get in and out. Secondly, they close at 2:30 to clean. It was close to the closing time and the ship wasn’t even ready to stop yet for the level drop, We opted to leave the elevated viewing dock and go to the park area to watch from ground level. At exactly 2:30 a staff member evacuated all guests off of the viewing deck. Everyone from there came to the park area as we had to see from the ground level. I understand the need to sanitize and be health conscious during this time. However, I feel this cleaning could have been done prior to the ships arriving so people can see the lock activities. If there are no ships expected, keep the sanitizing schedule as is. The staff have the times of ship arrivals so it could be a more pleasant visit if these practices changed.

Great place to get a sense to St.Catharines history and see the ships
The SC museum is located at lock 3 of the Welland Canal. It is also the site of the Lacrosse Hall of Fame as well as showcasing the history of St.Catharines.Admission is free but a donation is appreciated. It is a nicely laid out museum and will take about an hour to view, then you can go outside to the viewing area and hopefully see a ship go through the lock. The staff are very accommodating and will go out of their way to assist you. It is well worth the “side trip” as you travel to NOTL or Niagara Fall. Take the Niagara St. Exit off of the QEW.

Essential if you want to know more about St Catharines and the region
The museum offers interesting insight into the history of St Catharines and the role that the Welland Canal played in its development. The attached Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame is quirky but engaging, at least to someone who as a teenager watched box lacrosse in Victoria. An unexpected bonus that we were able to watch from the viewing platform as the CSL Assiniboia passed through Lock 3. It fit in well with our timed visit, 1 1/2 hours to allow for cleaning between time slots.

We visited the museum on June 28. There is parking next to the museum, no entrance fee just a donation. The exhibits are about Lacrosse, St Catharines and the construction of the canal between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.
If you are lucky, you will see a ship entering the lock.
Next to the museum is a monument to the workers who lost their lives building the canal.

This was a happy surprise! We were in the area for another reason and met a couple who explained the locks and directed us to the museum. We were fortunate that there was a ship in the lock when we arrived.. We briefly went into the museum, and we were able to watch the shop leave. It's just very unique experience that we didn't plan on doing!

My family visited here recently. The volunteer information guide, Christopher, was walking around on the viewing deck answering all our questions about the ship passing through. He was incredibly knowledgeable and chatting with him significantly enhanced our experience, far more than info we got from the paid staff inside. Call ahead and ask for the link to the vessel schedule.

Ship enthusiasts and history buffs, this is your place! After researching online, this was very close to what I was expecting and it does look different in person, as most things do - but in a good way. The museum is informative with the rich history of the locks, the canal and the surrounding area. The observation platform is the star attraction, and we got there just in time to see a cargo ship rising to proceed upriver. The view of inside the lock give a greater appreciation of the usage and need for the locks.

Views of the ships are not a guarantee and should never be taken as such. Any data reported at the lock site is only by estimates. Many factors (like currents, river traffic, navigation issues, transition through other locks) can and do affect the actual arrival times. Do not let this discourage you or leave a bad feeling. There are websites that can provide real-time positioning for river and lake traffic (MarineTraffic.com is a good example). Again, research is the key. Plan ahead and you will not be disappointed.

I will be coming back on my next trip through!

Everyone told me when I came to Canada this was a must see.
Nice afternoon trip although a lot smaller than expected, could go around in less than half an hour

It's all about the timing. My wife wanted to see the locks and I was interested in them too. I checked the schedule online and found it confusing and not really sure what time a ship was going to come through. We pulled up at the perfect time. A ship was just pulling up to the lock. By the time we got out of the car and to the lookout it was pulling in and we were able to watch it the whole way through from the lookout.
I must say that the lookout is impressive and there was a guide answering your question. There were also several poster boards detailing the locks. We watched the ship transfer through the lock and then went inside the museum. The cost? by donation, suggested at $5 per person. So we threw in $20 for the 3 of us (our adult daughter was with us) Then we watched the movie, it was informative, and proceeded through the museum.
I really enjoyed this stop and learned a lot. I was really surprised at the number of changes to the different canals over the years.
Very interesting. If you are interested in history and the challenges in building the locks I would highly recommend this.

We just stopped by to see the canal and the locks. This is all so interesting! I was sad we did not have time to wait to see a ship go through. They can look up the schedule and let you know approximate times.

Somewhat interesting museum centered around the construction of the Welland Canal from lake Ontario to Lake Eire. A lot of items concerning lacrosse and Native Americans. Adjacent to Lock #3, where 10 or so huge ships pass through every 24 hours. Marvelous sight if you can catch one

The museum was closed when we got there, but plaques, Info and outdoor displays were enough to satisfy us. We saw the locks, climbed up the stairs, and walked around the park. People sure are ingenious.
