Due to covid we couldn't do the underground tour but it was still cool to see the big nickle! Its a nice stop area, good place to stretch the legs after hours of driving.

Well, when in Sudbury, you need to come here. It is a short walk from the parking lot and great place for a picture

Was pretty impressed with the size of the Big Nickel. Everything else was closed but there were information boards outside to read and understand about the Nickel industry in Sudbury.

I wish I could add more to my comments besides the great view of an iconic coin but like most other things Dynamic Earth was closed. But it still worth the drive up the hill to see the nickel and take in the view of the Sudbury basin

Exactly as advertised - it's a very big Nickel! There's a mine shaft you can go down - part of the Dynamic Earth science centre - but unfortunately it was closed for COVID when we were there. Still, the view is pretty nice and it's a good photo opportunity. It's good for a quick stop, stretch your legs, take a few pictures, then head on your way to your next Northern Ontario adventure. I wouldn’t drive in to Sudbury just for this, but it’s part of the local attractions if you find yourself in town.

Was nice to see the big nickel but unfortunate that with Covid-19 the facility was closed. Hopefully we can go back someday and get the full tour.

Very imformative. Excellent underground mine tour. There is an interactive area for smaller children. Enjoyed the perma frost exhibit (Opened on Feb 15). Displays of rocks and history of mining in Sudbury. Of course how the community started repairing the environment in the 70's

I grew up in Sudbury and toured this mine a dozen times with grade school and tourist friends. Recently, went back with my husband and children and everything is different and more fun.
You can still mail a postcard from underground, it's still damp and dark, but the way the info is presented, the things you get to see and touch are really informative and interactive.
Do yourself a favour and go learn a bit about something you may not have ever really known!

Are shorts okay to wear through the tour with jacket?

Sure shorts are fine for the underground tour. It is damp and cool...there is water on the ground in some places so closed shoes would be best or if wearing sandals watch where you are walking.

Do I have to book online? I would prefer to save my visit for a rainy day but that may not be possible if I have to pre-book.

You should pre book. If you just show up you may be disappointed if they are sold out. The day we were there they were at capacity.
During our guided tour we went down an elevator shaft that makes you feel like you're going way down. However, how far down do you actually travel?

Hi!
The underground tour takes you 22m underground. That is roughly 70ft or 7 stories underground. Thank you for taking the time to leave a question!

Do you need closed toe shoes?
Staff S
Sudbury, Canada
Hi!
We will not stop you from going on the tour in sandals, but we do recommend sturdy shoes. It is a gravel floor and it can be quite wet at times; proper footwear ensures you get the most comfortable experience!

Is there a minimum age for going underground?
Staff S
Sudbury, Canada
Hi Caitlyn P.,
We do not have a minimum age for going underground so feel free to bring your little one(s)! We also offer strollers in the event that you wish not to use your own. The tours last approx. 1h15min which can be long for little ones. If at any point you'd like to return to surface simply let your guide know and they will make arrangements. We hope to see you soon!

Is there parking space for trucks towing a 25' travel trailer.
MaryLou A
Salmon Arm, Canada12 contributions
Yes there is ample room for parking with a large trailer. However; if you go there on a vrry busty day you may find it difficult to maneuver around the other vehicles in the parking lot.

I will be arriving in Sudbury on Saturday March 24th. What is the earliest and the latest can I come in and booked for an Underground Tour? Thanks
Staff S
Sudbury, Canada
Hello Don P. and thank you for reaching out!
Dynamic Earth is open from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. The underground tour typically lasts between 60 to 75 mins and the first tour begins at 10:15 am. The very last tour offered on March 24th will run at 2:45 and there are tour times throughout the day.
I hope this helps answer your question! If you have any others please feel free to give us a call at (705) 522-3701 and we would be happy to help.
We look forward to seeing you,
kindest regards,

Is this suitable for teenagers? I feel like they may be bored. Thanks!

The mine tour was unique- however teenagers (unless interested in such) will likely be bored. There aren't many hands on activities for them compared with science north. Most of the other activities (outside of the tour) are geared for younger children. They do have unique simulation 'games', but often there is a wait. Overall I would bypass.

I was wondering the schedule for the underground mines I have my son and grandchildren visiting from out west and would like to take them
Hi Judy!
Our underground tour schedule is variable as we have tour groups that can book our timeslots. That said, we have about 18 tours a day, or 2-3 per hour. We do have exhibits and shows here to keep you busy until your tour commences :D
If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to send me a message at mcguire at sciencenorth . ca
Hope to see you soon!
