This is a great rest stop for those who have driven all the way from either Winnipeg or Sault Ste. Marie. A great view of the Sleeping Giant as well.
And of course Thunder Bay being the site where Terry Fox had to stop his marathon to support cancer research due to his worsenjng illness, this monument is built for his honour and to continie his legacy.

I've traveled past the signs for this monument on multiple occasions while traveling across Canada and this one day I figured it was well worth visiting a monument dedicated to one of Canadas greatest hero's.
Upon first approach when entering the parking lot I had noticed that the trash bins throughout the parking lot were overflowing and trash was starting to collect onto the ground where some of the lighter trash was blowing across the parking lot into the shrubs surrounding the parking lot and into the park itself. Although this was somewhat disappointing I was not surprised.
I walked along the path to the monument itself that was overlooking the highway and Lake Superior beyond and was really taken aback at how poorly this monument has been maintained. I fully understand the tarnish that over time is expected to be generated on such a monument but the amount of bird droppings that covered this monument of such a great Canadian was disgraceful.
As I climbed back into my vehicle to continue my journey I took a moment to reflect on my experience of this monument and instead of feeling inspired or uplifted all I could feel was ashamed.

An absolutely magnificent memorial to one of the all time great Canadians. Beautiful memorial in a gorgeous park setting on a hill with a fantastic views of Thunder Bay and the Sleeping Giant. I can remember as a teen in 1980 his trip across Canada that sadly ended before he entered the city. Highly recommended, it gave me a great feeling of pride to be Canadian.

The monument area is very well set up, with very inspirational views. DO take the time to read the inscriptions, they evoke powerful emotions. Terry Fox, even though he didn't live to find out, changed Canada. Through his herculean effort, he drew attention to a serious issue, and his achievement has inspired millions of others to raise money for cancer research. But he also showed how passion can create change, and now there are 1000's of events like his Marathon that raise 100's of millions of dollars for excellent causes. The place where he actually ended his Marathon of Hope is just a few kilometres east of the monument, marked by a blue sign next to the highway, but there's no organized or safe place to stop.

The monument itself was beautiful in a wonderful location and it gave me goosebumps to read and remember this remarkable young man. However, we were all disappointed with the upkeep below the memorial as it had tonnes of weeds. We found this a little disrespectful and not in the spirit of the commemoration. Otherwise, I would give it a 5.

We visited this roadside park and it is outstanding. They have rest facilities, a manned information center and lots of space to stretch your legs and overlook the lake. The statue and story are so moving. What a feat He did to bring awareness and funds to fight cancer. He will not be forgotten and may his effort someday lead to the end of Cancer.

We truly love this monument. Terry fox has always been the true definition of a hero and this monument is a wonderful tribute to him. Will stop to see this anytime we are passing through. A great education sight for children to be able to appreciate the kind heart and spirit this man still evokes today

We made this the first stop in Thunder Bay coming from Wawa. After using the clean restrooms and picking up a city map, we walked out to the viewpoint over the Trans Canada Highway to see Lake Superior.
Here, reading all the info on the monument and placard board, we became acquainted with the life story of a remarkable person who made the most of his short life 1958-1981.

We new a little about Terry Fox and his story. Visiting from Australia you can only admire and be inspired by his story and his heroic journey. We sat and admired the statue for a while and read about his run and how much money he raised. You couldn't help but feel sad about his final days and the sacrifice he made. What also made it special in the background you could see the sleeping giant across the water which made it even more special. Even if your not Canadian and you are travelling by stop and take some time out to witness this incredible human being.

Hi there, it was moved in 1993. In 1993, the MTO relocated the monument to a new rest area directly across the road. An old concrete base marks the original monument's location, and it is still visible in the tall grass from the new Terry Fox scenic lookout. The new Terry Fox Memorial Park has considerably more visitor parking than its predecessor, and it has much better facilities for tourists
