Some things you can count on in this life are Taxes, Sunsets, Getting Older and finally some of the best smoked fish anywhere from Liisa at The Fish shop. Even with the Covid-19 protocols in place, the selection is huge, the conversation lively and as always I feel great when I leave, even if my wallet is slightly lighter.

This is about the 20th time I have been into this shop, but the first with my wife so we spent quite some time with Liisa (the owner) as she explained the history and stories of not only the Amethyst, but of the Finn Gifts and a short history of the store itself. Fascinating. Great fish and unique gifts.

Well, where do I start. We wanted to stop in one of the many locations around Thunder Bay that sells Amethyst stone. We happened upon this location and went inside to browse. The female owner of the the shop was chatty and informative about that area. My husband was SUPER excited to find that they sold Birch Syrup, something he had been in search of for at least a year. However as we had flown with only carry on luggage we were afraid the purchase the syrup thinking that it might be confiscated at customs. So, hubby snapped a quick picture of the details on the back, in hopes that he could have some shipped. Next thing we know, this guy in sock feet comes out of no-where and says "You like our birch syrup, don't you/" Hubby says yes, and gives him the details of his search for this elusive product. The fellow responds "There was two bottles here before!" My husband (who is 60 years of age) says, "No, there is one one this display and one over there." The awful, angry man goes on to say "I think you took one and have it in your pocket!" My husband, said "No, that is my phone." The man then proceeds to pick up the back of his shirt and says "This pocket, I think you took our syrup!" My husband pulled out his wallet. I was so ANGRY and so OFFENDED! Seriously, who would steal Birch Syrup??!! Would a 60 year old man, really stoop to this level? The woman was down in the fish portion of the store when the sock dude made his appearance. We cannot get over this happening to us. My husband went back to tell them that in 60 years of living he had never stolen anything. The woman was basically hysterical at this point, saying that the sock dude made a mistake. I'll say, he made a big mistake. Perhaps they have been victims of theft in the past, but to level such an accusation is shocking. So do yourself and find another stop for your Amethyst stones or run the risk of being accused, in front of other customers of being a thief.

If you love fresh smoked fish - multiple kinds are available - this is the place to go! My sister and I stopped in yesterday and I had fish and fishing on my mind... I chose some plain smoked salmon nuggets— so moist and absolutely delicious - and some red fin trout (see picture!) Half of the trout. —which looked very meaty to the eye —will make about three hearty meals. This is what remained after 1 serving. I had to remove the skin and bones to get this.
Besides the fish there are also other yummy treats like fresh home made carrot cake, bread and the famous anise flavoured Finnish sweet loaf. It looks like a big braid. You won’t be disappointed and of course in the main section of the store there was lots of beautiful amethyst jewellery and other creations.

We stopped here on our way back to Thunder Bay from one of the amethyst mines. Wow, what a terrific little place!! The owners are so wonderful, super friendly, and gave us so much local information.

We bought fresh sourdough bread, maple glazed smoked salmon chunks, smoked salmon cream cheese spread, and locally made garlic sausage & Gouda cheese - then headed off to a local beach that the owner recommended for a picnic lunch. Thanks so much, we loved Wild Goose beach!

I have never seen so much amethyst in one store in my life! Everything you could ever dream of... rings, earrings, bracelets, pendants, faceted stones, polished stones, gem trees, inukshuks... all in amethyst, and decent prices. A really great little local place that’s a must-stop if passing through the area.

As we got close to Thunder Bay heading West, we saw the Fish Shop sign and took Lakeshore Drive off of H'wy 17 and found our way there much more easily than we had the first time a few years ago. They have loads of amethysts of all sizes and qualities, and, woo hoo! many items were on sale! I got earrings for the granddaughters and a sweet little ring with amethyst and pink opal for me. My husband, of course, was drawn to the smoked fish counter -- ok, so was I -- and we got some still warm, freshly smoked trout and freshly baked sour dough bread for a picnic lunch right outside the store. The owners are super nice about supplying plastic cutlery and napkins. We also bought a piece of carrot cake to have later on for dessert. Yum! If you're anywhere near Thunder Bay, don't miss The Fish Shop!!!

Just a half hour east of Thunder Bay on the Trans Canada business loop at Crystal Bay is The Fish Shop. All fresh and smoked fish is fresh prepared and local so the catch varies by the season and the day. When we were there they had just got in local blue berries. The smoked fish is prepared in the style of Finland where the family originally came from. There is no liquid smoke or fake wood flavor involved. Very organic. There is also a nice gift shop and a large selection of mostly local Amethyst, even some quite large outdoor pieces, which is locally mined. Good selection of Amethyst jewelry.

Just a short trip on a well marked detour brings you to this wonderful shop. If you're lucky enough to be served by Liisa Karkkainen, the owner, she will answer any questions and tell you about the origin of this iconic shop. Great product, well worth the cost. Try the Candied Maple Syrup Smoked Salmon Pieces!

There are a lot of signs for this place but it is easy to miss. It looks like someone's house with a big purple sign on the road. The smoked fish is excellent. Trout pate, yum! The butter tarts are also delicious. The proprietors are very friendly and willing to answer questions. If you are looking for amethyst gifts, there is also a whole showroom of stones, jewelry, etc.
