You gotta skate here!
Jan. 2020 • Couples
It’s quite the experience to skate under a highway! The din of overhead traffic quickly dissipates as you are drawn into the atmosphere of people swirling around this trail. Music in the background, beautifully decorated trees and lots of seating to change your skate with access to an indoor area with lockers if need be. Free mini muffins from the Quaker area which also boasts outdoor firepits. Also a Corona apres ski patio is available. The area surrounding the trail is very well decked with rubber mats so its easy on your blades. Equipment available to support new skaters. It was fun!

Very pretty at night with free snacks from Quaker!
Dec. 2019
This is an amazing place FOR FREE in downtown Toronto. We went there on Dec. 21st in the mid-afternoon and again in the evening. They are open until 9pm for holiday hours. It’s a beautiful space that’s decorated with festive lights.

In the afternoon, Body Shop was there and giving out FULL SIZE body butters for free. All day long, Quaker was giving out granola bars and delicious cookies (see photo).

ICE: a bit bumpy in areas, but they have a Zamboni that smooths it out once in a while
-pretty cool trail with music playing

FACILITIES: washroom, indoor and outdoor areas with seats/benches to put on your skates, free lockers (see photo) that you need your own lock for OR you can buy a lock from the vending machine for $3.75
-skate rentals for $10/adults and $5 kids, and skate sharpening for $8
-warming area with 2 fire pits and comfy sofas

STAFF: helpful and friendly

PARKING: so easy! There are 2 lots directly WEST of the skating trail. The only tricky part is that the sign to turn into the driveway says “Fort York” and not the Bentway so it was confusing to us at first. It’s very cheap – only $1 for half an hour.

Overall, an awesome place to take kids for a free skate. Highly recommended!

A great experience in Toronto
Feb. 2019 • Family
Strap up your skates and skate under the Gardner Expressway.

What a great experience this was, we had so much fun. We spent just over an hour skating and enjoying our time as a family and found this was just a perfect event to end off a busy day.

If you are in the area give it a try they rent skates too!

Ice-tastic!
Feb. 2019 • Friends
A Zamboni groomed ice surface in downtown Toronto, under The Gardiner. Lots of parking. Lots of seating to get skates on and off and take a break.

Hot drinks available on site. Skate rentals and lockers available. Good vibes and pop music abound with families, dates and singles enjoying this smallish loop.

I went on a Saturday afternoon, busy but not overcrowded. And went again on Sunday morning, the music wasn’t on but I had my own, the ice hadn’t yet been groomed but was skateable, very few people skating....great time to visit if you want lots of space.

My only recommendations are change up the music to also include waltzy or classical music and Zamboni a bit more frequently. Will definitely go back!!

Family skate
Dec. 2018 • Friends
I was impressed with the facilities... easy parking, warm area to put on skates, lockers, hot chocolate. But QUITE disappointed with the size of skating area. Quite a bit of hype for not a very large surface. It would be nice to see it enlarged and then it will be perfect.

Magically lit up 💕
Feb. 2018 • Family
Part of a quality time evening with my “tween” little man we came to experience the Bentway’s skate at night.
We unintentionally cut our time really short arriving just 20mins before they closed for the evening. (Weeknights close an hr earlier than weekends) Thankfully because of this timing error we scored a prime parking spot in the complimentary parking area. Determined to make the best of the time we had left we rushed over to the ice and quickly got our skates on. My son, a hockey player, loved skating around the uniquely shaped figure-8 skate trail. He also thoroughly enjoyed watching me, mom, try to get her ice legs back as I determinedly struggled to complete my one lap! Even though it’s located under the gardener expressway (Toronto’s downtown highway) you actually wouldn’t know it as they’ve done a fantastic job creating an invitingly magical ambiance complete with twinkling lights, decorative trees and park benches among other seating options all around.
Once my one lap was completed I sat and watched my son enjoy his skate with the CN tower off to the side, an added bonus “backdrop”. The staff I occasionally spoke with were very friendly.
The Bentway serves food and drinks on weekends during operating hours & this season (2019) Thursday’s are free rental night for those who don’t have their own skates or helmets and would like to save a few dollars!
The Bentway is definitely a “something different to do”, and an inexpensive to do at that, with family, friends, first date or quality time with your partner! We had a fun, short yet sweet time!

Skate at the Bentway
Jan. 2019 • Family
Let me begin by giving you a rough location. In between Bathurst St & Fort York/CNE. About 1 block south of Front St & 1 block north of the Lakeshore. Very accessible by TTC as well a P parking within a few feet away.
My girls aged 12 & 13 went skating at the Bentway on a Sunday in January 2019. They really enjoyed a skate in the early afternoon with the brisk cold air whipping through the condos & off of Lake Ontario. We have our own skates so it was a quick change of footwear & off they went. I saw that they have a couple warming stations with washrooms available as well. They also have a bit of liquor along with coffee & hot chocolate. The music is really nice to hear in the background.
Very good use of space. Thanks Toronto.

Skate the 8 in the Six! ⛸⛸⛸

The Bentway Skate Trail (near Fort York)

Skate the 8 in the Six! ⛸⛸⛸

My family with teens wanted to do an outdoor activity with all the cousins during the Christmas holiday. The Bentway Skate Trail in downtown Toronto was the perfect choice.

The Bentway is located under the Gardiner Expressway on the lands of Fort York National Historic Site, running from just east of the Fort York Visitor Centre (250 Fort York Blvd) to Bastion St. The Bentway Skate Trail is a 220m figure-eight skate trail.

We were 4 adults and 8 kids (ranging in age from 12 - 20 years).
All skate levels (from beginner to AA Select hockey).

Everyone had a great time, despite a cold wind coming off the lake.

We parked at Fort York parking lot. ($1 per each half hour or $8 for full day).

One of the cousins had brand new skates - he got them sharpened there for $8 cash only. You can also rent skates, helmets, etc Cash only.

We paid for 3 locker rentals at $3 each ($5 cash deposit and $2 back when you return the locker key).
They were pretty small considering you want to put boots, water bottle, bag for each member of your group.
There were 54 total lockers available.
Half of them were rental with keys. The other half were free.
TIP - We will bring our own locks next time.

Pros:
- easy to get to dowtown Toronto by car
- parking was close to the west side of the Skate Trail
- public washrooms
- warming stations
- seating available both on and off the ice
- nice music played over loudspeakers

Cons:
- can get cold winds off Lake Ontario
(So dress for the weather - dress in layers, hats, scarves, gloves, snowpants, warm jacket and you will be fine)
- leaves on the ice can cause skating trips
(Although we saw the rink guards often clear the ice with a large rubber squeegee type broom)
- the east side curve of the skate trail was a hazard with uneven ice
(Had to be extra careful when skating there and at the edges of the ice)
- the skate trail is only 220 metres in length - I really wish it could be DOUBLE the size.

In all, the Bentway Skate Trail accommodated many different skate levels and our family enjoyed a pleasant afternoon outdoors together.

We will definitely be back!
