Neighbourhood: Downtown
At the heart of Toronto, Downtown is the destination for cheap eats and fast fashion. Cut through by hip and trendy Yonge Street, the vibe here is young, with a strong student influence from the Ryerson University Campus. As a result, the Downtown area is always in flux: undergoing the construction of new facilities, with fresh retail spaces and pop-up cafes. Home to Toronto's largest indoor shopping mall, a number of vintage cinemas, and a healthy nightlife centered on the area's Distillery District bar and clubs near the East End, it's both an easygoing daytime spot and a popular party place after sunset. It also features some of Toronto's best outdoor landmarks, including Yonge-Dundas Square and the Nathan Phillips Square: perfect for a concert, a skate, or a relaxing sit-down.

Food was fine but the real shocker came with the bill. We ordered a bottle of wine, recommended by the waiter, which was quite mediocre, and made the BIG mistake of not asking the price. When the bill came the wine was $85. Lesson learned - always ask the price, and avoid Wvurst.

Ah Union station is such a beautiful old building. The last 2 times I've been there it has been a nightmare negotiating the stairs, hall etc. There are barely any signs to let you know where to go etc. Sad really

This beautiful train station is a worthy destination and attraction by itself. Downtown Toronto is quite walkabout, outdoors on the sidewalks and indoors through the 30 km underground PATH system. The station is at the heart of it all. On this visit, we noticed that they have really improved the WIFI and food court, and we enjoyed an amazing Jamaican dish of jerk chicken there and got caught up with our emails. We are big-time walkers, and even walked from Toronto Union to Billy Bishop Airport to catch our flight home.

Beautiful station, especially the business lounge. First time taking train in Canada and everything was great. Business class was very good: Very comfortable lounge, walked straight onto train. 4 and half hour journey to Montreal passed easily with frequent drink, meal and snack service.

Union Station is really nice. Clean, free wifi, lots of places to eat and drink in the York Concourse. Has lots of transit options, including long distance trains (via rail), commuter trains(go train), go buses, the ttc, and the UP Express which is great for getting to Pearson Airport. Overall, it's a great station.

A hub of activity. Loaded mainly with rail passengers who work downtown or connect with the subway system to go to another destination. The old rail building is similar to those central stations found in many major cities around the globe.

There's a lot to be said for Toronto's $800 million reconstruction of Union Station as well as for the historic nature of the building. Seems to me that they're doing a great job with a busy transit hub that manages VIA Rail, GO Transit, TTC subway, and UP Express trains.
One thing that was glaringly omitted from the plan was any thought to how passengers are dropped off and picked up when traveling to and from Union Station. At the main entrance, along Front Street, there is a taxi stand running west and space for emergency vehicles running east. When private vehicles stop to pick up or drop off passengers in the taxi stand zone (which happens), the taxi drivers honk and get exasperated. I experienced this first hand. I saw some vehicles stop in the live lanes of Front Street to do their drop off or pick up. The whole scene is ridiculous. I'm not sure how the city neglected to address this at all.
If there is another passenger pick up or drop off location, the Union Station website doesn't mention it. In fact, they don't mention it at all. While many people use ride-sharing, taxis, and transit after leaving the station, there are still many that are being dropped off or picked up by private vehicles. No accommodation for that seems to have been made.
If someone has a solution and knows where to drop off and pick up passengers at Union Station, add a comment and fill us in. If Mayor John Tory is reading this, maybe he can shed some light on this glaring deficiency at Union Station.

how do you get picted up at union station in a private vehicle
Written February 5, 2023
If I go from London Ontario on train 70 at 7:40-10:10 in the morning will 22 minutes be enough time for a very able person to catch train 40 to Ottawa at 10:32.

Hi, arriving at Union Station with lots of luggage. Is there a transportation company I can prearrange pick from Union station to take me to my hotel?
Written July 23, 2022
Don’t know of any in particular but there are plenty of taxis and Uber you can request also. If you can manage your luggage there is transit which won’t be easy but it can work.
Written July 23, 2022
Are there lockers or a secure place to leave my luggage for a few hours at Toronto Union Station? I'm traveling business class-is there a place there?
Written August 23, 2019
Not sure about lockers.
There is the Fairmount Royal York hotel, right across the
street. Like all hotels they have luggage storage so they may be able to help you.
Suggest you contact both Union Station and Royal York.

Where is a good place to meet friends coming in from Pearson airport.
Written March 11, 2019
If you will go to Toronto's Union Station, there's a handy new food court, lots of seating, there. Just pick a place (near Tim Horton's or such)

Is there a shuttle bus/car service at Union that would go to Innisfil
Written September 25, 2018
There are buses but you want to research them as the schedule isn’t 24 hours - I would highly recommend the advice of a previous member, take the GO train as the bus will take a LONG time to get out of the city and region.

Is there a location at Union to pick up /drop off by car.
Written September 14, 2018
You can drop off passengers in front of the station on Front Street, but there is no designated waiting area to pick up passengers. I have often waited at a pay parking spot on nearby Station Street to pick up people. Station Street is just south of Front Street West and runs from University Avenue to Simcoe Street.

Arriving at Toronto Union Station from Pearson International, my daughter and I will have a few hours to explore the city before boarding the train to Windsor. This train doesn't check luggage (carry-on only). Is there any place in or near the station where we could safely stow our bags while we sight-see?
Written July 12, 2016
VIA Rail offers a baggage check-in. Please contact a VIA Rail representative at 888-842-7245 or visit VIA's website for more information.
