A nice selection of beers to bad the seating policy for groups is fascistic to say the least.

The manager of the bar became abusive the minute I asked for a table of 8. Apparently you can only be seated if you come as a group at exactly the same time. This is hard to accomplish to say the least. Suffice it to say that they left us standing around for a couple of hours... out of complete and utter frustration we pulled some chairs together only to have the bouncer !?! come and tell us that only 4 people could sit at the table. We were not causing a disturbance and all of us are in our mid 30's. I have never had a worse experience at a restaurant in Toronto ever.

I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

C'est What used to be one of my favourite places in Toronto - the beer selection is great, and the food is a step up from the usual pub fare. I live close by and used to go in a couple of times a week. Unfortunately, I can no longer go there because the service is so appalling. It's always been a bit surly, but the last time I was there, the people in my group were treated like felons for such crimes as a) being a group; b) one guy, whose birthday it was, going to talk to a friend who was at the bar. The friend bought him a shot. Apparently, this was seriously disruptive and merited being yelled at by the manager; c) people occasionally getting up to talk to someone at the other end of the table. This also merited being yelled at. Keep in mind that this wasn't a group of rowdy, drunken louts but of professionals going out for some food and a drink after work.

When my friends decided to leave and I politely explained to the manager that it was because they were disappointed by this treatment, I was called "sweetie" and told (out of the blue) that "you don't pay my salary." (Really? Customers don't pay your salary? Do you understand that the business gets its money from customers, and that's how it pays you?) So unfortunately, I can no longer visit the place. Too bad.

It was very encouraging to see some other reviews of this unpleasant and distasteful establishment, and realise that we were not the only ones to experience rudeness, hostility, disrespect, and and a very bad atmosphere.

On arriving here, the bouncers quizzed us nastily about 'where had we come from', a question that left us puzzled as to what they were asking. One especially ill-mannered and arrogant bouncer demanded to inspect my personal belongings, and was outraged when i asked him for ID to prove her worked there. His fellow bouncer had the nerve to ask me if it was that big a deal - I explained that being treated this way as a patron, and as a person, was a very big deal indeed. The manager was no better, the bar staff surly and dismissive, and the whole experience was very furstrating.

I would not hesitate to discourage anyone from visiting C'est What? as we have such a wealth of polite bars and restaurants where the staff realise the value of their patrons and respect them accordingly, for this sleazy joint to continue to have our business.

Very popular location and it justifies the popularity.

Due to it being busy, and just dropping in rather than booking, we ended up sitting and eating at the bar - what a lucky happening. Very good food (can recommend the shepherds pie and the falafel), good selection of beers - and great service.

Well worth the visit - as others have said, easy to miss so search it out!

I agree with the above poster having had a very similar experience myself. While the seating policy is bordering on fascist, it was the hostility of the bar manager that left me feeling like I was in a surreal Seinfeld episode. To top it off, the attempt at intimidation by the scrawny bouncer in a cheap, oversized suit could have been amusing had my group not have been waiting for some semblance of service for over an hour. There are thousands of bars in Toronto, most of which are able to provide at least a modicum of service - this is not one of them.

One of the best Club wraps I have ever had. A great dinner after watching a movie with my best friends. Great place for a meal with friends.

We went C'est What last night with 2 other couples. Decent selection of beer but nothing to really write home about. The prices were actually decent considering it is a downtown bar. Unfortunately a few of the beers on their menu were either sold out or they no longer carry.

Employs the most absolutely disgusting repulsive and RUDE staff in this city! Like other posts, they operate according to what they see fit and in a fascist manner...amateurs at most! Every time I'm there, there's always a problem between the scums they employ and the patrons that pay their wages! Do yourselves a favour and stay away from this place!
