This perennial favorite is a modern-day speakeasy. The cramped space -- it seats only 100 -- is below street level, yet feels intimate rather than claustrophobic. Live jazz, whether Dixieland, New Orleans, or swing, belts out 6 nights a week. The epicenter for the swing dance craze in Toronto, this is still the place to watch glam hepcats groove.

We went for late Friday night cocktails, but am looking forward to going back for dinner... I like that there's different bands different nights in rotation. The cover was only $10.... a deal for live music! The place is underground and not one you'd likely happen upon without searching. The service at the bar from the girls was excellent, the... More

Went to listen to jazz and enjoy a night out. Tried the charcuterie board and it left something to be desired. This was like throwing food I could find at No Frills onto a platter and charging $35. It was so uninteresting that I ordered nothing else. The place is full of middle- aged women that can't read the menu... More

When you enter the venue which is below street level, you feel that you have been transported to a dimension when jazz was king. Tables are adorned with white table cloths and candles that set the mood. We were seated at a table that had a great point of view, since we arrived early. The food arrived in a reasonable... More

I went there recently for a large party. I was not familiar with this place and was impressed with the overall vibe and music of this place. It is so eclectic - everyone fits in. Our waitress Violet was super attentive. Food was good.

This place has an interesting vibe and a cool atmosphere, but is very small. There isn't a lot of room to stand, or move, and I was elbowed several times in the shoulders by bar backs and bus boys. I know they have a job to do (I used to be a server and a bartender) but a simple nudge... More

Some people will not be interested in my big long rant, so I will keep it simple for those who do not want to keep reading - I have never been treated so rudely and chastised in a service establishment in my whole life as I was at this place. My complaint rests on the door man who was the... More

I was really surprised by this place; didn't know they still existed. Great drinks and a nice selection of starters, Tapas, Pizzas and Sandwiches. It also carried a band and played really cool and soothing jazz music. It wasn't a restaurant of such and the prices weren't bad. My only issue was that it was way too dark to read... More

The Reservoir Lounge is a great little underground jazz venue which is often packed with standing room only. As soon as you walk down the stairs, into the dimly lit lounge, it feels as though you have stepped back in time. The live lounge bands never fail to entertain and their menu is both satisfying and reasonably priced. Tables are... More

Staying in Downtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Downtown
At the heart of Toronto, Downtown is the destination for cheap eats and fast fashion. Cut through by hip and trendy Yonge Street, the vibe here is young, with a strong student influence from the Ryerson University Campus. As a result, the Downtown area is always in flux: undergoing the construction of new facilities, with fresh retail spaces and pop-up cafes. Home to Toronto's largest indoor shopping mall, a number of vintage cinemas, and a healthy nightlife centered on the area's Distillery District bar and clubs near the East End, it's both an easygoing daytime spot and a popular party place after sunset. It also features some of Toronto's best outdoor landmarks, including Yonge-Dundas Square and the Nathan Phillips Square: perfect for a concert, a skate, or a relaxing sit-down.
