The Market Gallery is located in the upper level of the St. Lawrence Market on Front Street. The market itself is interesting to walk through and has several food-service stalls. The Gallery itself is just one large room, containing exhibits about the development of brewing beer and ale in southern Ontario. Access is by elevator near the main doors. There are public washrooms in the basement.

This quiet, little-known Museum over the bustling St. Lawrence Market is either a Quinn quick in-and-out or a spot for serious contemplation, depending on what’s on. The current show on Toronto through the eyes of women artists is the best I’ve seen there. Although the 19th-century artists are of mostly historical interest, the works get increasingly powerful as the show’s arc bends toward the present. I’ll be returning for a longer look at pieces I particularly liked, most by artists new to me. Don’t miss the 27-minute doc on Russian-born Paraskeva Clark, who at 81 was colourful, quotable and subversively charming.

Last Saturday the Market Gallery offered free admission to their show of women painters and their depictions of Toronto, from the late 19th century to the recent past. The works are a selection from those held by the City of Toronto. I was particularly pleased to see works by Paraskeva Clark and Doris McCarthy, but there are many other very good pieces. This show should not be missed. It runs into April.

But I feel the new admission fee is too much for such a small space. The show about the history of bikes in Toronto included ephemera, posters, old bike license plates and about a dozen bicycles.

Thanks for visiting. We are glad you enjoyed the show. There are a few options available for free or reduced admission, including MAP passes from the Toronto Public Library, free admission for post-secondary students on Thursdays, and 50% off admission on Fridays.

The Market Gallery is a small overpriced room virtually impossible to locate with small traveling exhibitions. If you want to lose $15 (Adult + Youth) then you can see this it is located upstairs from the main entrance to the market with an elevator and two deserted stairwells. We saw an exhibit on the Cycling Culture of Toronto you could learn everything with a 10-minute free web search.

Two things; 1. go and enjoy yourself. 2. if you are NOT from Canada make sure you have Canadian money as no one will do the exchange rate, there so if it is $10 Canadian and you have $10 U.S. forgot the 20% off they want $10 period so if you pay with a U.S. dollar you lose 20%. MAKE SURE you go to the bank and do the exchange. There are MANY good places to sample food and other goods from the local area. Take your time and try the poutine (just a hint) don't forget dessert. Enjoy

Thanks for recommending us. Just wanted to let you know, we can't speak for the merchants in the market, but the Market Gallery does provide exchange for US dollars, if you happen to buy something from us.

The old North (or Farmers') Market having been torn down, archaeologists have been able to sort out the remains from earlier days before work on the new North Market. The result is a small but fascinating exhibition on the history of the building and the various objects found below it. The exhibition ends in mid-March; try to see it while you can.

Delightful exhibit about The Beatles and the music scene in Toronto in the 1960s. Nostalgic and informative, was well curated and organized. Don't miss this

The Exhibit "When the Beatles Rocked Toronto" was so worth it. Talk about a time warp. Well organized and the videos are such fun, oh the screaming girls! The wall mounted timeline about the changes to TO were informative, dare I say educational!

And then you can buy Quebec Cheese downstairs!

Nice, but mostly food. Several small gallery type stores mixed in. Go for the food, not for the gallery stores.
