A beautiful church to visit with much history to offer. A very spiritual experience, many participate in the climbing of the stairs on their knees in prayer.

This unique oratory (French: Oratoire Saint-Joseph du Mont-Royal) is a Roman Catholic minor basilica and national shrine on Westmount Summit in Montreal, Quebec. It is Canada's largest church. In 1904, Saint André Bessette, C.S.C., began the construction of St. Joseph, a small chapel on the slopes of Mont Royal near Notre Dame College.[2] Soon the growing number of the congregation... I had not visited the Oratoire since a school trip in the '70s. This time I was there with a friend from western Canada. This is a must-see, whether or not you are Catholic. There are several levels to visit. Don't miss the fabulous mosaic mural at the front of the church (I am a mosaic artist!). Take time to... More

Visited with a friend, I was surprised to see people from all ethnic group religions visiting this holy place to see the historic Church and learn about St. Joseph's miracles curing people who were paralyzed. Unforgettable experience.

This impressive Basilica was built to honor Brother Andre who was known for his healing work. The work was inspired by his life, though he never saw it himself. It's quite modern, with a beautiful garden area with the "stations of the cross" with sculptures spaced along the path. It ends at a lovely pool. It must be quite something... More

Architecturally stunning. Recommend an evening visit, it's less busy and the view of the city from the top at night is delightful. The inside is inspiring and the gardens lovely. The kids loved the outside and sped through the inside.

If you're going for a very unique view high atop the city or just to get a workout walking up the stairs, this is the place for you. It is a church, though, at which point I guess it's just up to the interpretation of those who attend. I found the inside to be quite somber at best, in no... More

Visited here recently and it is beautiful, lots of steps to climb to get access but not sure if there are lifts. The inside is amazing and the views from the top are breathtaking. Well worth a visit.

Staying in Parc du Mont-Royal

Neighbourhood Profile
Parc du Mont-Royal
Montreal was named for this hilly highland, where the tallest spot in the city overlooks its most extensive parkland. The greenspace of Parc du Mont-Royal is an outdoorsman's dream, with hiking trails and nature walks that cater to every season and level of athlete. In the winter, cross-country skiers, tobogganers, and ice skaters don their equipment by Beaver Lake and its pavilion, while the warmer months bring families and competitors to the pitches of Jeanne-Mance Park for tennis, soccer, football, baseball, volleyball, or a dip in the community pool. A perfect spot for a stroll or a picnic, the forest foliage is dotted with sculpture art and offers views of some of Mont-Royal's oldest edifices, the towering St. Joseph's Oratory and the mausoleums of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges. Home to musical celebrations and twilight snowshoeing alike, visit here to walk, write, rest, think, or just be.
