To the North of it is the old Venerable Redstone Hudson's Bay Company, now like a Macy's . They still have those multi-colored wool blankets that is their trademark and have great Cosmetics Displays and Offering. You can access McGill Metro from its Basement. To the South, is the Canada Cement Building, one of the first Cement Buildings in Montreal, dating... More

We stayed at the Le Square Phillipe across the street. The trees were lit so beautifully and there were no homeless people lingering about as others have said. It was so nice to take a few pictures here and walk by on our way home from our travels. It's directly across from a nicer pizza place (which is very good)... More

Of the three Montreal squares in close proximity: Phillips; Victoria; Place D'Armes- this one retains the most of its original flavour and charm. Largely because it's thus far been spared re-development and most of it's trees and grass remain intact. It's still more a park than a plaza. It's true there are more homeless now than 30 years ago but... More

There were vendors in the park and the park itself was nice but the entire area has so many homeless people it ruins the entire city. Everywhere you walk and in at lot of the restaurants there are people asking you for money. I was not impressed with the city.

A fun place to visit. Lots of people, birds-pigeons, squirrels, and simple Nature ... revealing herself to the visitors. Fresh air, lots of place to walk around and enjoy the outdoors.

This is a lovely little square across the street from The Hudson Bay company store. There are a variety of street vendors selling their wares here...including a tent that sells wonderful ice cream, a floral vendor and several jewelry vendors. Nice little spot to sit and observe the loveliness of this wonderful city.

This small square is located next to Promenades Cathedrale and Christ Church Cathedral. There's a big statue here and lots of shops and restaurants around. There's also a small market here.

Staying in Centre-Ville (Downtown)

Neighbourhood Profile
Centre-Ville (Downtown)
Montreal's towering skyline is concentrated in the Downtown area, its nexus of commerce and commercialism. A suffusion of luxury hotels, flagship stores, high-end restaurants, and corporate headquarters characterize the neighborhood, which by nightfall transforms from a business district into a youth-culture hotspot, with hip bars, clubs, and restaurants heavily peopled by students and young professionals. The once-seat of millionaire's 'Golden Square Mile', an incongruity of stately mansions and dapper brownstones sit between glass skyscrapers, creating a visually lush urban landscape. Beneath the sidewalks lay the Underground City, the world's largest below-ground mall, a labyrinth of over 1,500 shops and eateries that echo the profusion of cafes, gallerias, cinemas, and fashion outlets above. From the scholarly array at McGill University to the carousing crowds of Rue Crescent, visit Downtown to shop by day for what you'll wear there by night.
