The streets are great for strolling about and taking pictures. Just soak in the ambiance. The one downside is we did stay in a hotel in here and there is a lot that goes on at night (festivals, etc) so it is super noisy.Visited February 2023Travelled with friendsWritten February 13, 2023
- john c1 contributionCanadaNiagara Falls was a bucket list destination and was wonderful as was Toronto. We took a train to Montreal and it was such a relaxing trip. Montreal and the day trip to Quebec were also very good. We were not thrilled with the disparage in information shared by Tripmasters and the hotels.... not accurate at all. We had to contact the hotel for the instruction for self-checkin at Toronto (The Annex) as it was not received. Tripmasters advised we would be greeted by staff.Visited May 2023Written May 15, 2023

The port has always been an essential part of the city economy, so take a tour. And there are places to eat and drink as well.Visited June 2023Written June 19, 2023

Lots and lots of activities and places to shop, snack, dine, park. There are ferries from there but we didn't take any. Benches along the way, great are for a picnic. Plenty of arts to take pictures next to. Walked up and down in 2 hours and didn't miss a thingVisited July 2023Written July 19, 2023

This part of the city is gorgeous especially on a snowy winter evening. It has great shopping, restaurants and makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time

The Old Port of Montreal dates back to the 1600s (1611 or 1642, depending on what you read). In its infancy, the Port functioned as an important trading post during Canada’s fur trade right through to the mid-1800s. Beginning in the early 20th century, grain became the major commodity in Montreal; thus, the Old Port became a significant hub and portal for the transport of this precious product. Later, as Montreal continued to modernize, shipping activities ceased at the Old Port in 1976. It wasn’t until the early 1990s that city planners hatched the idea of turning le Old Port into the bustling tourist attraction that it is today. In this respect, I see the Old Port as a sort of pioneer and precursor to places like Gastown or Yaletown in Vancouver; you know, redeveloping an old industrial site and having it appeal to tourists and locals alike.
In the current day, Montreal’s Old Port is a major tourist attraction. One could easily spend a few hours walking the beautiful pathways – along the St. Lawrence’s edge – and admiring the beautiful confluence of old and new: In terms of the historic, there are a few information plaques providing important context and outlining why the Old Port was (and is) significant to Montreal. There is also the Montreal Clock Tower, erected in 1922, which served as a literal and figurative beacon to sailors coming in and out of the Old Port; and, of course, there are a few historic buildings as well. With respect to the modern, the Old Port is home to Clock Tower Beach (a fake beach adjacent the Clock Tower); La Grande Roue de Montreal, which is recognized as the largest Ferris wheel in Canada; zip-line fun; and the Science Centre, which opened in 2000. In short, the Old Port has a little something for everybody, young and old.
During our visit, we ambled along the Old Port – albeit a bit slowly due to a foot issue I was dealing with at the time – and admired the gorgeous views of the St Lawrence River juxtaposed with Old Montreal. Above all else, it was nice to see so many people out and enjoying themselves after a couple years of restrictions. The world was – and is – coming back to life.

This is a nice place for a walk. They have made very wide and maintained paths. There is a lot to look at with all the boats and ducks. A real nice spot.

Lots of things to see and do in the Old Port. We did a boat tour round the harbour and went on (what we called) the Montreal Eye which was excellent. Plenty places to eat, but not sit and a market of sorts, selling all sort of things. Lovely way to spend the afternoon.

Fun area adjacent to Old Montreal, right on the river. Lots of activities, from a ferris wheel and ziplining, vendors and food, even a resident Cirque du Soleil show. Definitely worth seeing.

I went with my 5 years old. He did the small ones for children and both the 13 feet tall. It was very fun. He couldn't go on the higher ones but i'm sure a teenager can.

There is a big pay parking lot on the riverfront. We found street parking in or on the edge of old town.

This might be a long shot but I was in Montreal sept 13-15 and visited Old Port and one of the vendors had handmade polished metal jewelry. Just wondering if anybody knows the name of her business. I really regret not buying something from her she had beautiful pieces.
Thank you

I think that fishing is not allowed... but I´m not sure.
Although is named "Old Port", really is a big leisure centre, with one sports Port, and one commercial centre, restaurants... etc

Being from a warm place, I have no idea what it's like to bike in the snow. Are bike tours actually possible or practical during the winter months? I'd like to do a bike tour because it covers more of the city than the walking tour.

We actually asked at The W Hotel in Montreal where we stayed & the Concierge told us how much snow they had & I personally would NOT recommend it. The wind was unbelievable & add snow as deep as we had explained, I'd say no. We are also from a warm place & NOWAY would we consider it.We were there for the 1st snow of the season .Have a good trip.

You are very close only about about a 5-10 min. cab ride. You could walk it or use a cab or Uber.

How do I rent a car at Pont Jacques cruise terminal
Little_Shoolhouse_On_Wheels
Chilliwack, Canada181 contributions
If you are arriving at Pont Jacques Cartier terminal, you are no longer in Old Montreal. You will be about 15 minutes east, near the Olympic Stadium. (Most likely the ship is being redirected there due to all the construction and restoration work being done right now in the Old Port.)
Depending where you are staying and how much luggage you have, a car might be useful. There aren't any car rental offices within walking distance of that pier, as far as I know. They are all situated quite a bit further away on Sherbrooke Street East and other sketchy parts of the neighborhood. However, pick your favorite rental car company and when you call or book online, make sure to specify that you need to be picked up at Jacques Cartier Pier. Most of them do this with no charge.
I absolutely recommend walking and taking the metro and buses once you're in the downtown core or Old Montreal area, But from where you're landing, a car would probably be your best bet. The closest metro (Pie-IX) is quite a trek away from the pier, and if you have a lot of luggage it's going to be Hell on Wheels for you!
