Great area sort of in between Mont Royal Park and Little Italy, northwest of downtown. If you do not have a car (like us) there are a few metro subway stops from Old Port or downtown Montreal. We actually visited twice on Friday & Saturday, August 2-3, 2024. We did quite a lot of walking, stopping in at used clothing shops (there are a lot of them in Montreal), craft shops, and food, bagels and coffee primarily. Montreal bagels are the best. Quite a lot to see if you don't mind walking around. The neighborhood is very diverse ethnically and there is even a walking tour for those who don't want to discover things on their own.

I've lived in this neighborhood for over 10 years now, and love the convenience of it. We happen to have three amazing bakeries within a five-minute walk of our house. You can't go wrong with the food choices here; there's something for everyone, from upscale gourmet food to chef-prepared salads and take-out to your favourite fast food joints. A very happy event was when Amelio's (an Italian eatery that is famous in the McGill Ghetto) moved into the neighborhood. And don't forget ice cream: Outremont boasts the best ice cream in the city at Bilboquet. not to be contrary or anything, but I prefer their sorbets! For all kinds of gourmet supplies (chocolate, coffee, imported foods, truffles, coffee, etc.), a visit to Gerard Van Houtte is a must.
Outremont has several public parks, making it one of the greenest areas in Montreal. It's pleasant to walk under the towering maples. Or walk through the well-kept Mount Royal cemetery to reach Mount Royal park.
Window shop along Laurier for high fashion and home decor, but go to Van Horne to find one-of-a-kind local handicrafts at Yazz.
The hipper Mile End neighborhood is just a few steps away, with freshly made bagels, popular coffee joints and a funkier selection of clothing.
Outremont is easily accessibly by metro (the Outremont stop) and by bus (80 from Place des Arts, 160 or 161 from points east and west, and 51 from Cote-Sainte-Catherine).

So there are 3 sides to it: The student side with the $0,000+ students studying at the Université de Montreal , the Orthodox Jews with their Sinaguoges, great Bagel Shops and Vehan Coffee Shops (St Viateur) and the hip jet-setter Yuppie out for a Cappucino or Ice Cream on Bernard Street. There is a Cinema here to that shows independant films.

Two places have closed since my review "The borough I call home" was written: Amelio's on Bernard and Yazz on Van Horne. But new restaurants have opened, so there's still plenty to enjoy!

THe best planned residential area of the city with inclusive neighborhoods. Lots of parks, local shopping, cafes with vital street life. Many neighborhood events, well served by public transport, great architecture and landscaping.

Beautiful neighborhood that has a lot to offer. Don't miss Rue Bernard with its trendy restaurants and a nice walk in the Mont Royal park with its scenic view of Montreal

Stunning neighborhood. You'll need to remind yourself that you are in Canada, by most accounts, and not in Europe. Make sure to check out Chezkie's Bakery while there!

Outremont is a residential borough of Montreal. The neighbourhood is inhabited largely by Francophones. A Hasidic Jewish community is strong here too. You can also find several restaurants, cafés and shops after your hike in Mont Royal park.

I'd like to stay in this area, looking for a reasonably priced accommodation. Any suggestions?

I am not aware of any hotels in Outremont that I would recommend. airbnb with a location close to Bernard St. could be a better alternative.
