This is a fantastic way to discover the real Montreal. Our Guide Darren was exceptional. It was unbelievably cold and he took extra care to keep us as warm as possible. The tour takes in some really interesting places and Darren's storytelling, knowledge and humour made this a super enjoyable. Our kids 15/11 thoroughly enjoyed it. Would heartily recommend!

That was a cold late November morning but our guide Stefanie made it a perfect start of the day. The tour was well crafted. Stefanie is a very talented tour guide, very vivid, artistic and with a good sense of humour. The tour was in the Old Montreal area which is amazingly beautiful. I'd definitely recommend the tour and the guide. Thank you for a nice experience!

What an amazing walking tour. Stefanie was so engaging and entertaining despite the very cold weather. We learnt so much in such a short time. Although it was free it was worth a very big tip!! I would recommend making this the first thing you do in Montreal! Thankyou!

This was our first free walking tour and the experience was wonderful. We arrived in Montreal around 11 AM and our tour with Sandy was scheduled in the afternoon. She was smart and funny and before we knew it the 2 hours had flown by. As she walked us around she shared many local tips for food and shopping. I have traveled cute a bit and usually book tours through other companies where I paid for the tour and then tipped the guide. This seems like a much better model to pay the guide directly.

Stephanie was a fabulous guide! She was funny, clear, genuine and friendly. She kept pace with the group but kept us moving. Great stories, great stops, excellent communication of where we were going, when we would stop, when we had a break, etc. Also great recommendations for seeing even more. Highly recommend!!

This was a superb tour of Montreal. Our tour guide Darren was proud, funny, interactive and very knowledgeable. We covered key sites and his narrative included history, society, politics, economics, demographics and culture. At the end of the tour he distributed three sheets of recommended restaurants, attractions and things to do in Montreal. We used these guides to shape the rest of our weekend in Montreal and the recommendations (especially the restaurants and Marche Jean Talon) were spot on. This tour is billed as free but tips are encouraged, and we gave Darren a really good one at the end. Worth every penny.

What's the difference between this and the paid walking tours?

The difference is the tips because in paid walking tour you’re not obliged to give tips. But in free walking tour the tour guide’s income depend on the tips given to him by his group. Also, I found the tour guides in free tours are more passionate in what they do and give you more insights and hidden treasures ( where to get reasonable souvenirs, food etc.) of the city than the paid tours. I said these things because I did both the paid and free tours in which I prefer the free tours. Also, the free tours depend upon the availability of the tour guides in which it might be available every day. I hope these insights will help you decide which one is to book.

How do we sign up for free walking tour? Every time I click on free Montreal walking tours I am sent to various food tours that are not free. Very frustrating! We are staying near the Basillica so want something in that vicinity.

They still have food tours (access via website already referenced) but these are not the usual free (pay what you want) tours. Still a walking tour so you need VERY WARM clothes. It is currently -11 Celsius and will be -20 on Jan 12.
