Address
Neighbourhood: Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie
Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie has one of Canada's most prominent Italian communities, with Little Italy concentrated along the convivial bends of Saint-Lawrence Boulevard. Known for its fantastic bars and authentic Italian fare, the domain includes the Jean-Talon Market, the largest public market in North America. Open year-round, sunny months see fruit and vegetable stalls set up outside the main chalet, while blustery weather draws crowds indoors to meat and cheese sellers, spices and truffles stalls, and for regional delicacies such as rare Charlevoix lamb. While the market dictates what's fresh for local restaurateurs, visitors can please more than their palates, taking in the Renaissance architecture and frescos of Madonna della Difesa, the picturesque Rue Saint-Rominique with its cheerful homes and splendid gardens, or the ornamented thoroughfare of Plaza Saint-Hubert.

- Larry10803Pelham, New York294 contributionsGreat market definitely worth visiting!Loved this market! So many options for fresh fruits, vegetables, prepared food, desserts, even flowers! Open air but covered market with a great variety of vendors. Underground and inexpensive parking is available. Also close to the Italian section if so inclined. Highly recommend!! If you enjoy going to markets do not miss this one.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten February 17, 2024
- IAN DWigan, United Kingdom26,573 contributionsGood marketProbably the more tourist of the two major markets in Montreal. Its not in the centre but easy to reach on the underground . Good selection of fruit and veg stalls and a mixture of other stalls. We went to a very good coffee stall in the inside market.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten May 18, 2024
- Lisa BBedford, New Hampshire44 contributionsFun experience with lots of local flavorThis was a really fun stop during our weekend in Montreal. The kids liked buying ice cream and macarons, and it was a cool experience to see all of the local vendors. We got there via Metro at the nearby Jean Talon stop, so it was easily accessible. It would be a great place to stop for lunch if we had timed it correctly.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten July 6, 2024
- Jackie QNew York City, New York27 contributionsTreat for all five senses! My favorite part of our visit to Montreal! The market is hopping in the summer with wi detail things for all five senses. My children were given lots of free samples from the bakeries and the shopkeepers in the market. Highlights were the maple syrup stand in the middle of the market, lunch from Le Coin Sante, crepes from the creative and the unbelievable cannoli from St. Martin’s Pâtisserie. Just watch out in St. Martin’s: they sometimes overcharge tourists so be sure to check your receipt. I grabbed a 2 for 1 item and the cashier originally charged me due both but refunded me after I pointed it iut.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten July 9, 2024
- sonia sSaint Louis, Missouri13 contributionsMarche Jean Talon was our best experience in MontrealThis market tops them all! Aisle after aisle of the freshest produce beautifully displayed. Surrounded by small restaurants and offering every type of food imaginable - get a coffee, sip a glass of wine, buy a baquette, you name it. The area was clean and there were plenty of places to sit and just people watch. If I lived in Montreal, I would choose to live within walking distance of this market.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten August 16, 2024
- sanju_222323New Jersey17,707 contributionsone of the largest public markets in North America and one of the oldest...Let's start with the fact that it’s one of the largest public markets in North America and one of the oldest, (established in 1933) with a flavor all its own. What I liked most was that this open-air market enticed me with the scent of fresh flowers, high-quality, locally grown fruit and vegetables, and Quebecois cheeses. Located in warehouse-style buildings, the markets feature vendors selling fruits and vegetables, flowers, meats, fish, cheese, baked goods, and specialty foods. You'll find maple syrup and candies, dried wild blueberries, home-style fruit jams and preserves, and the region's fine cheeses, as well as restaurants and cafés selling luscious pastries Butchers, bakers, and fishmongers fill tables with fresh offerings and offer everything from ice cream to sushi. Even if you have no intention of buying anything, it’s still a joy to walk past the overflowing fruit stalls and fragrant flower stands. Yes, cleaning can be your concern but not that much. Even if you take a stroll through the market, make sure you check out the selection of Quebec specialty products.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten August 16, 2024
- Juan Pablo ISt. John's, Canada52 contributionsA go-to in MontrealI visited the marked just to take a peek with no intention of buying anything, which I accomplished. I wish I had though, because everything looked so fresh and tasty. Lots of options of meat, vegetables, jams and other local products. There is a couple of places to sit down and have a meal or just a coffee. The ambiance is quiet and cozy, although it can get busy at times.Visited November 2024Travelled soloWritten November 26, 2024

JT is a true farm producer market. Meet the people who grow local produce. They are proud and full of character! Grab a coffee at one of a few places while walking through the bustling roof covered building in the winter and enjoy the friendly vendors inviting patrons to sample their produce. In the heart of little Italy expect it to be busy Sat / Sundays parking is limited. Well worth the visit to see how locals shop. This is a destination and a real treat.

We had decided to include this on our itinerary to visit whilst we were in Montreal. We expected the market to be same as markets in England which comprise food, hardware and local artefacts. Unfortunately, all that was on sale was food (mainly fruit and vegetables). This was a shame as we had walked a long way to get there (35000 steps according to the Fitbit!) and there was no point in buying anything as we were on holiday staying in a hotel. We did purchase our lunch there and it was very good. The market would be brilliant for holidaymakers who are self-catering in close proximity but with hindsight, we shouldn't have bothered to make the trip.

Well worth a visit especially on a rainy day as most of the market is under protective cover. Lots of beautiful food to view and sample. Vivid colors present in the carefully arranged fruits, vegetables and flowers…the Quebec autumnal bountiful harvest fully on display. Amazing aromas of apples and freshly baked bread/pastries. Several meats on display along with a smaller area for seafood…very enticing. Parking in an under the market is a little tight and crowded but very reasonably priced.

Wandering around and seeing the fresh produce and some incredible vendors was a treat to witness in these times. They take sanitation seriously, requiring hand sanitizer upon arrival. Sad that there is no magic of sampling products like previous times, though that's no fault of the market itself.
Even without samples, get a bottle or two of the ice cider. Crisp, refreshing, and locally produced.

This market definitely has a lot of produce and plant vendors, but it was really fun to walk around and visit other vendors that sold things that you could enjoy as a tourist. One stall had lavender goods and great art postcards that we bought from. We also got a coffee to sit and enjoy the scene. The maple syrup in cans were comparable in price to grocery stores, so another great souvenir. Check out the businesses that wrap around the market as well - we got some delicious Italian cookies from a fruit store across the street and some Middle Eastern spices from a Tunisian market that had pottery and baskets displayed in front.

Market Jean-Talon is at the same Metro stop (Orange Line), and while we were there in November, many kiosks were still operating outdoors. Many were closed for the winter season, but midway was a Middle Eastern Sweet Shop and we cheated and stuffed our face with Baclava and other things we could not pronounce but looked so good and tasted great. We bought sausages and salad fixings and then cooked them back at the apartment and enjoyed the meal. It was just like living here.

I absolutely LOVED this market!!! Full disclosure: I'm probably biased, because that's what markets in Europe looked like when I was growing up. The prices are a bit up there, but worth the quality of produce. So much to see and try. Many food and coffee options. Amazing flowers... I made a day trip out of it coming from Jersey and it was totally worth it! I went on a Saturday, so by midday it got very crowded. Less people earlier in a day, but some eateries were not open until 11+am. Plan accordingly and enjoy!

This market offers a different experience from modern city, it feels calm and relax. It has some cheap products. I ordered a basket of mango that only cost $1 CAD, and two bar of soap $15. For travelers who want to cook on their own instead of dining in the restaurant must come to this place to order fresh veggies and fruits that can't beat other market.

Somewhat weak for tourists; It is more interesting for local residents to buy flowers, fruits, vegetables, etc. I expected there to be more little shops, like there are in the São Lourenço market in Toronto, for example. It has 2 stands selling typical products (such as maple) with better prices than those in more touristy places. But it's further away from the center, so I don't think it's worth the trip.

The Jean-Talon market was at one time the largest open air market in Canada. Now with the lack of vision the Authorities have reduced the market to a shadow of itself. It was a tourist attraction now it is a desolation area. This would not have been done to the Atwater Market.
I grew-up in the area and I was proud of the Jean-Talon market, now I am ashamed of what the Market Committee has done to kill it.
Shame on you

I am driving a group of US passengers in a motorcoach on Sunday (Oct.14). Where is the best place to drop off the group and then park the motorcoach?
Written October 12, 2018
That is a hard question. The only choice is to park the coach on the street in front of the market. It's a tight neighborhood for large vehicles.

Hi everyone , planning a trip to Montreal in a week. Question on the Jean Talon Market? Is it required to pay for the food tour ? I just want to buy some stuff and just browse the market. Thanks for any info.
Written June 10, 2018
I’m not sure about a food tour, however you are free to browse and purchase as you wish. Enjoy!

What metro stop on the orange line should I get off at?
Written August 4, 2016
The closest metro would definitely be Metro Jean-Talon.

Any problems getting a taxi from Market to McGill Univ. ? About how much should we expect to pay? TY
Written March 28, 2016
I believe it would be easy to get a taxi, but it would be fairly expensive, $20 at least. take the metro - which is simple, inexpensive and speedy

What days of the week is the market open? what times?
Written February 22, 2016
The market is open 7days/week. There are vendors early morning about 7am onwards till late afternoon. Weekends are better since many vendors come from outside of Montreal. Don't forget to try some of the surrounding restos for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Written February 23, 2016
Is the market open in the winter? Is it outside? Wondering how my children will hold up in the cold if it's all outside.
Thanks!
Written December 29, 2015
The market is open air. I visited in Summer, so I don't know how things are done for the season change. For the availability of indoor food shopping fun in Winter, I recommend Marche Atwater.
