“Unrealized Urban Renewal, Dominated by ETS”

This is a big urban renewal area, not fully realized. It is dominated by the ETS University, the second biggest technical school in Canada. The campus buildings are all over the place, as well as residences for the students. Right now this area looks like a lot of construction sites, empty space and then modern apartment buildings. No Metro service.

Ouf this is a disgusting area of Montreal, nothing but condos blocking sunlight and little-to-no life. Most of the people hang out at the nearby canal which is the one and only appeal of this neighborhood. A true eyesore that doesn't belong - plus people live in Murphy Beds that fold out in their living room due to small tiny living spaces.

Griffintown is a sea of construction and development.

We were on the 9th floor but still there was a lot of construction noise. The restaurants were limited. We did not see any galleries, which we expected and had to travel to downtown for better food choices. If you are going to Montreal for tourism, this is not the place to stay

Fun young hipster neighborhood

I stayed in an air bnb in Griffintown with a couple friends for a long weekend and the area was really cool. If I had to relate it to anywhere else, it's the Brooklyn of Montréal. Lots of converted industrial buildings that now house cool loft style apartments, cafes, restaurants and bars all full with a young adult crowd.

We eat at one of the more upscale reasturants in the neighborhood and it was clear that the city was already hip to this up and coming area because the place was packed. We also sampled a couple of the cafes and really had nothing to complain about, food and coffee were tasty and the people were nice (in both French and English lol).

For me, Griffintown is not the best part of Montréal but it is the perfect place to set up home base. It's a close walk or cab to other parts of the city and you get to feel like more of a local by staying there. There is a cool outdoor market as well so you can stock up on fresh fruits, snacks or dinner supplies and not feel like you were in any old super market.

I will definitely stay in this neighborhood again next time I visit.

Beware--no "there" there!!

OK, so we rode the bus to near where the Trip Advisor City Guide "Point Me There" feature said Griffintown, and in fairness we found--on one side of a street thoroughly ripped up with construction work--a couple of small restaurants and an antique shop. We walked a little further, still looking for the charm the reviews said we should find, and finally stopped a young man on the street. When we said we're looking for Griffintown he said--this is it, and pointed out a corporate coffee shop on the ground floor of a four-story condo complex. Here's the deal: maybe both the Trip Advisor directions and the young man were wrong and we were just steps away from Griffintown, but there are enough OBVIOUS charms in Montreal that in light of limited time an attraction so hard to find goes to the bottom of our list. Not recommended.

Griffintown Rises from the Ashes...

Very few people realize that Montreal’s Griffintown area is one of the oldest neighborhoods in all of Canada. In fact, it was first settled in 1654, just west of Old Montreal. In the early 1800s, the area became the first-settlement point for many new immigrants to Canada; most notably from Ireland. By the mid-nineteenth century, Griffintown had become an industrial hub and was right at the center of the industrial revolution in Montreal, Quebec, and Canada. By the time I moved to Griffintown in 1996, the area’s industrial glory days were long over, and it was a largely abandoned and forgotten area of Montreal, occupied only by a few longtime residents and a handful of small companies taking advantage of low rents and reduced taxes. However, in 2007 a local developer bought and renovated a couple of the old industrial buildings and converted them into industrial loft-style condominiums outfitted with rooftop urban chalets. Due to its close proximity to both downtown Montreal and the Lachine Canal Corridor, the concept quickly caught on with young buyers, and since then the entire Griffintown area has been undergoing major redevelopment. Thousands of new residents have already moved into the many recently completed buildings; with the population now approaching 10,000 residents. Restaurants, cafes, banks, hotels, furniture stores, and other businesses have sprung up to service the new population. Griffintown is a good example of a neighborhood that has risen from the ashes of neglect to a vibrant and flourishing condominium community.

Wonderful neighborhood

This is a fun neighborhood to explore. It is a mix of new and old parts.

Great restaurants, mix of shops to explore. Great small parks.

And most of all the Canal to walk along with amazing views of the City and Griffintown

Really nice place to hang out with friends !

Great casual bistro ambiance, with a live jazz singer. Nice industrial loft decor with high ceilings and genuine brick walls. We had a great and friendly service. Prices are reasonable. They offer awesome unusual cocktails. Food we had was really fresh and very good. My magret (duck breast) salad was simply delicious! We will come back again for sure

Best hidden neighborhood in Montreal

Even though I went off peak season in January the restos are still full and there is a buzz around shopping and clubs.
Nice places and allot différant from other downtown scenes,highly recommended 😊
