If you are looking for an adult place to enjoy live music, have drinks and a good meal, look no further. This Montreal institution is delightful. Staff is efficient and the food yummy. The space is small and seating close together so make a reservation. They have multiple shows a night to allow for full turnover of the tables. The sound is excellent throughout, but they also have screens of the stage to help you see what is going on.

To call my experience at Upstairs Jazz Club as life changing would be the understatement of the century. I strolled out of this heavenly site with a newfound respect for life. The exquisite food in tandem with the marvelous service and angelic music truly made my vacation in Quebec a trip to remember. I was surprised to find my favorite jazz artist, Lil Durk, on stage spitting some of the most inspirational and blessed lyrics I’ve had the pleasure to experience! I’d like to give a special thanks to the waiting and kitchen staff for putting up with my unusual requests. Even the workers at hooters politely declined when I asked for my food to come in a cup and my water on a plate. The lovely gentlemen and gentlewomen showed hardly any judgement and complied. My favorite part was when I noticed that my idols - Dr Michael “Moreburgers” Morbius and Gru - were dining next to me, discussing the Stranger Things Season 4 finale. I was able to get their autographs, some selfies, and even a video of them saying their respective catch phrases: “It’s Morbin time” and “It’s Gru-in time!” If I could give Upstairs Jazz Club 10 stars I would. Eating here during your time in Montreal is a must.

This is such a great fun place and a must visit The musicians are always excellent, the ambiance and venue is great. It can feel a little small but it’s so popular. The bar staff are great and it’s such an excellent place to spend an evening if you love Jazz, recommended!

Unfortunately I cannot rate highly. We arrived on time for our reservation. Got seated right in front of the entry door with very limited view of the stage and people coming in/out constantly (on a very cold night). Ordered dinner and then waited for 90 minutes before it arrived. By the time our food was served the band was on the last song. Overall just not a pleasant time.
The band was really good, and the waitress was nice.
My advice to the club: get rid of the table at the door - way to crowded and uncomfortable.
Adjust the menu or get more staff in the kitchen, no one wants to be hangry during the show.

Great spot. Great music. Our server seated us and took our drink order. After a while the drinks were served and the server ghosted us for the next hour and a half. The couple next to us, with a different server, had at least 8 drinks delivered by their attentive server. At least I saved some money.

I'm so glad we found this place! Excellent jazz, great food and an amazing atmosphere. I love jazz clubs in New Orleans and if I didn't know any better, when I walked in the door, I felt like I had been transported to New Orleans. Loved the jazz combo, the food was fine. We had the Cajun mussles and they were outstanding.

Upstairs, one of my favorite places in Montreal, not only for the artists it presents, but also for its food and good atmosphere.
For Saint Valentine they offered a set menu of $ 74.95 + tax and tips. I found it a bit expensive, but the place, I thought, warranted it. What a disappointment! : I told the waiter that I was vegetarian, and he offers me a risotto with mushrooms as a main course. For the entrée he brought me a salad. I had to return the salad because it had bacon and he kindly changed me for another one. Then came the risotto, I believe that it will not be called risotto. It was simply a parboiled rice with butter.
What bothers me is that certain cooks, (because you can't call them chefs) believe that vegetarians don't have any taste. I felt offended.
Please be more careful, not because you have already the money in your cash register you can serve crappy food. Have more respect for your customers. It's a shame, but truth, I don't recommend to anyone these fixed menus. Regularly they are so expensive and not worth it.
Very good musicians, but I particularly did not like the singer was like the rice, totally tasteless.

We were lucky to find this place quite near our hotel, and our group of seven enjoyed the entertainment - a piano player and guitar player from the Yukon! Their voices blended nicely when they sang duets, and each did some good solo songs. A mix a traditional (old) jazz, and some of their own compositions. Good sound system; friendly staff; good beer on tap.

What a treat to find a jazz supper club in Montreal. We were in Montreal for only two days and looked up jazz clubs and took a chance. We made a reservation and were shown to excellent seats near the band. We were there for an excellent Afro/Cuban band that played on a Sunday night. Our meal was very good and the server was great, answered many questions and was very attentive. I would love to go there again when in Montreal.

We have seen some truly wonderful shows at Upstairs: Bill Charlap, Fred Hersch, Roddy Elias. During the annual Montreal Jazz Festival, this is a real hot spot for anyone who enjoys first-rate jazz in an intimate club setting where you are practically on top of the musicians (and can chat with them during intermissions as you buy their latest CD). It's packed to the rafters then, and you definitely should not try to get in without a reservation (even with one, we've found ourselves sitting at the bar because there was no table to be had). The usual option is to go for dinner and one of the two evening shows (you can buy tickets and reserve your spot online or by phone--charges for the shows are usually quite modest in comparison to most venues). The rest of the year, there are occasional shows, but it's also a popular lunch spot for people who work in the eastern part of the downtown Montreal core. Standard fare (burgers, sandwiches, the usual dishes, etc.), but all fresh and well prepared. Casual, relaxed, and friendly service, and quiet enough to chat, though there's always some jazz playing in the background. A favourite spot.

What time does music usually start?
Written July 22, 2016
Hi Marywhotravels,
It usually starts around 8 pm but they like clientele to arrive at least 20 min in advance.
You can look up all the info about bands playing on the upstairs jazz bar & grill site. Definitely worth the visit if you are a jazz, blues & other music fan. TIP: best to reserve in advance space is limited - small but happening spot. Enjoy! :-)

We went there as part of the Montreal Jazz Festival to see a well known pianist, so yes, reservations were a must that night. We went early and got a really good table, had dinner first. It was fabulous. The concert I mean. The food was fine.

There's no cover in my experience, just the ticket price, though they encourage you to come for dinner as well as the show. If you're not having dinner, of course, I dare say they would expect you to buy something (e.g., drinks), since it's a club and resto, not a theatre. I recommend the burgers. :-)
