The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Le Plateau Mont-Royal
Go native in Plateau Mont-Royal, where bespoke shopping, hip eateries, and wacky paint jobs attract locals and transplants alike, making it one of the city's most diverse and distinctly authentic experiences. A creative hub, Montreal's artistic elite pack the cafes along Rue Saint-Denis, where young painters and fashion designers draw inspiration from the playful murals and stately Victorian homes that dot the Plateau's side streets. Not a major sightseeing destination, a visit to Plateau Mont-Royal allows you to enjoy a local perspective, soaking in indie films, latte art, contemporary galleries, and the city's best bagels. A center of polyglot culture, Québécois accents mingle with shades of Portuguese, Greek, and Hebrew in the area's iconic Mile End district, where restaurants straddle chic designer boutiques, serving up chorizo and caldo verde. Friendliest to those on foot, it's a jungle of colourful awnings and sidewalk umbrellas, pedestrian walks and luxury shopping.

Exploring Hasidic Montreal: A Walking Tour (only 3 offered in English this summer)
Went on the “Exploring Hasidic Montreal: A Walking Tour” only one of a few offered this summer. Fascinating, interesting and in-depth tour of the history and life of Hasidic Jews in Montreal. The Musee offers excellent walking tours on a more regular basis. Definitely worth checking out to learn more about the Jewish history and culture of Montreal

Delicious way to see the ‘hood’.
Beyond the Bagel food tour. It was very informative, entertaining and delicious. Be really hungry and plan for lots of carbs on the tour. Our only thought would have been to try to find some other types of local Jewish foods -cabbage rolls, chopped liver, etc so not quite so carb heavy— and maybe half a bagel vs whole one at a stop—- but on the whole very well done and delicious.

A slice of Montreal's Jewish History and food
We took the Beyond the bagel - walking tour. It was excellent. Very knowledgable guide who provided a great deal of information about the food, Bagels, smoked meat ans much history besides. we learned ate and walked. Bring some small sandwich bags to store the goodies you may not be able to finish.

This is a two floor museum and there is no elevator, so it is not handicapped accessbile. There was only one exhibit and it had nothing to do with Jewish Montreal. It concerned the divide between public and private spaces and was basically hanging curtains. We were told that the museum would soon be closed for renovations and they would install an elevator and hopefully provide exhibits dealing with Jewish Montreal.

The trip to the museum was not wasted, however, because from there it is a short walk to St. Viateur Bagel.

Hi there, Thanks so much for sharing your insight! It is always interesting to have our guests' opinions and we aim at making our guests' experience the best we can! Our Museum is indeed in transition and is being renovated. While we cannot fully be accessible to everyone at the moment, we still have some programming that includes everyone in our space or outdoor. Thank you for your support and interest! We hope to see you very soon! - MJM Team

Well it was raining and windy and an indoor museum seemed appropriate for the weather. But it’s not a museum it does walking tours through the Jewish district. Has some maps and small exhibit but not your typical museum.

The walking tour is a great way to combine exercise, sightseeing and learning. I was born in Montreal but the tour was still an eye opener. I learned how to look at old buildings in a new way and how the Jewish community shaped the city. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a bottle of water.

I always knew Montreal had a rich Jewish heritage of bagels and smoked meat! But to see and learn about the incredible contributions - both culturally and economically - that the Jewish community has made to both the city and Canada overall was fascinating. Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable, and very approachable and open. I highly recommend this walking tour!

We DID NOT take a walking tour but did go to the Museum. Actually Montreal should be ashamed to call this a Jewish Museum. It is housed in a small space on the ground floor of a building and the entire museum is comprised of several pictures of old synagogues and a display of books for sale. The tour we wanted was sold out but we made the trip to the museum anyway. Whenever we travel we always look for walking tours (especially Jewish ones) so that we can reconnect with those who came before us. In most cases there is not much to reconnect with - the old synagogues are gone and businesses that once stood are long gone. What does remain in a number of communities is a place where Jewish memorabilia is collected, stored and displayed. To that end it looks as though Montreal has failed.

We took the walking tour in Montreal. Emma was our tour leader. She was incredible. She is extremely articulate and certainly knows her facts and history about the Jewish people in Montreal. It was interesting to learn about the Jewish people who arrived in Montreal and how the city has changed with time. I hight recommend this tour.

Wonderful, delicious tour! The price is well worth the value because it includes substantial amounts of food, including bagels and other bakery goods and 2 meat sandwiches! You learn about Montreal Jewish history, tour interesting areas, and eat yummy food. Our tour went from 1- 4 pm, so we didn’t need lunch and were so full at the end we didn’t need dinner but only had some dessert later in the day. The only problem I found was that most of the stops don’t have seating and you are walking a lot. So you are really tired by the end. But the last stop is actually at the museum that sponsors the tour where you can sit and eat the delicious smoked meat sandwich from the famous Schwartz deli. Our guide was a loved college student and the group was very compatible. I highly recommend this tour.
