Neighbourhood: Le Plateau Mont-Royal
Go native in Plateau Mont-Royal, where bespoke shopping, hip eateries, and wacky paint jobs attract locals and transplants alike, making it one of the city's most diverse and distinctly authentic experiences. A creative hub, Montreal's artistic elite pack the cafes along Rue Saint-Denis, where young painters and fashion designers draw inspiration from the playful murals and stately Victorian homes that dot the Plateau's side streets. Not a major sightseeing destination, a visit to Plateau Mont-Royal allows you to enjoy a local perspective, soaking in indie films, latte art, contemporary galleries, and the city's best bagels. A center of polyglot culture, Québécois accents mingle with shades of Portuguese, Greek, and Hebrew in the area's iconic Mile End district, where restaurants straddle chic designer boutiques, serving up chorizo and caldo verde. Friendliest to those on foot, it's a jungle of colourful awnings and sidewalk umbrellas, pedestrian walks and luxury shopping.

I took the "Making their Mark - Walking Tour", and I very much enjoyed it. The day I took the tour was very hot and humid; however, our guide did a great job not letting the heat tarnish her enthusiasm, and specifically tried to have us stand in the shade as much as possible while she told us stories about Montréal's Jewish history. Overall, I learned some new things and had a good time learning about Jewish life in Montréal. I would recommend this tour to anyone who has a Jewish background and/or enjoys history.

This is a two floor museum and there is no elevator, so it is not handicapped accessbile. There was only one exhibit and it had nothing to do with Jewish Montreal. It concerned the divide between public and private spaces and was basically hanging curtains. We were told that the museum would soon be closed for renovations and they would install an elevator and hopefully provide exhibits dealing with Jewish Montreal.
The trip to the museum was not wasted, however, because from there it is a short walk to St. Viateur Bagel.

Loved this tour! As always we met great people and enjoyed the food at all of the stops. There were also plenty of stops on the tour that didn't involve eating but really helped us get a feel for Jewish culture in Montreal.

We had a great time on this walking tour conducted by a very enthusiastic university student. She had great material with her, showed us pictures of decades ago and thoroughly explained the evolution Jewish society in Montreal. Along the way we strolled through pretty neighborhoods of restored houses.

Very informative and tour guide was great, but it too long and there was too much information that felt hard to retain. Food was tasty though not much variety. My husband and I left early - after about 2 hours.

Dear Sharily,
Thanks so much for this review!
We are surprised to see that you were disappointed by th variety considering that there are at least smoked meat sandwiches, pickles and different kinds of pastries provided to our guests during the tour.
We are glad to read that you enjoyed our guide and overall our food tour.
Thank you for your support and interest!

My family and I had a great experience on this wonderful tour. We highly recommend it. Our tour guide Avery was outstanding! We were pleasantly surprised by the quantity of food we were given and we each have our own favorites (Babka, the Wilensky special, and the Schwartz's meal). This tour was the highlight of our 3.5-day trip to Montreal!

Our guide, Romy, was both knowledgeable and enthusiastic. This made the tour both informative and entertaining. We really got a good feel for the history of the Jewish people in Montreal.

This was a fantastic tour of a different neighborhood in Montreal that we haven't experienced. And we got to taste some delicious food along the way! Rachel, our tour guide, was very knowledgeable and personable. I was glad that I had seen in other reviews that we didn't go inside most of the restaurants so my expectations we tempered ahead of time. The bagels were SOOOO good (fresh out of the oven) and we got so much food along the way. Of course the highlight was the last stop at Schwartz's for a half sandwich of smoked meat and a pickle. The perfect way to try so many different items while learning about the history of the neighborhood along the way.

Q. For STAFF please,
I'm a member of Surfing. It is an on line site. I will be Surfing with a local from Montreal area. She is hosting me for four days & as a thank you I would like to bring her on this tour. She has not done it before even though she's been there 35 years. She has another Couch Surfer coming from Japan at the same time and communication is sketchy right now with the one from Japan. Since the lady from Japan responsible for her own ticket availability on short notice for her ticket and is it easy enough to add one to the group.?
Question number two is if we purchase it for her and she chooses not to participate could we get a refund? Thank you, Debra Debra

Hi Debra,
Thank you for your note!
- In response to your first question, yes it is usually easy to add one more person to a tour as long as we know about it at least 24hrs in advance.
- Unfortunately, we do not offer refunds unless there are special circumstances.
Please feel free to email us at tours[@]imjm[.]ca or call at 514 317 6580.
All my best & happy couch surfing!

The cost and if one of the 3 expected guests cancels do we get a refund?

The cost was around the $25 mark. Unsure about refund on cancellation. The tour was wonderful and worth every cent. It would be unfair to ask for refund as the cost covers the pay for the guide.

Hi there
I have a couple of questions please:
1. Do tours operate in January?
2. Do you take kids?
3. How long are the tours?
Thanks and regards

I know that the tours do not operate in winter; they go through October. Yes, they take kids- there was a 3-year-old in a stroller when we went. The tour is approximately 3-4 hours.

I am very puzzled by the reviews. I contacted the Museum via e-mail to get their hours and was told that it is a "virtual museum" that exists only online. I also inquired about tours of Jewish Montreal offered in late May and was told we'd have to hire a private guide since it was off season and it would be about $200 for about an hour for a private tour. Was I correctly informed? I also inquired about kosher restaurants in the area but that aspect of my question was not answered. We're leaving in less than 2 weeks, so advice from the TA community would be most appreciated.
