Neighbourhood: Le Plateau Mont-Royal
Go native in Plateau Mont-Royal, where bespoke shopping, hip eateries, and wacky paint jobs attract locals and transplants alike, making it one of the city's most diverse and distinctly authentic experiences. A creative hub, Montreal's artistic elite pack the cafes along Rue Saint-Denis, where young painters and fashion designers draw inspiration from the playful murals and stately Victorian homes that dot the Plateau's side streets. Not a major sightseeing destination, a visit to Plateau Mont-Royal allows you to enjoy a local perspective, soaking in indie films, latte art, contemporary galleries, and the city's best bagels. A center of polyglot culture, Québécois accents mingle with shades of Portuguese, Greek, and Hebrew in the area's iconic Mile End district, where restaurants straddle chic designer boutiques, serving up chorizo and caldo verde. Friendliest to those on foot, it's a jungle of colourful awnings and sidewalk umbrellas, pedestrian walks and luxury shopping.

Warning: Go hungry. Do NOT eat the entire portion. Take a bag for leftovers. Remember your water! Have done food tours around the world and this one is by far the largest servings ever: two different bagels, two or three different desserts, two sandwiches. Our family party found the Jewish history interesting, but there seemed to be a little too much emphasis on the founding families, and the tour could have easily been cut by an hour. We especially appreciated the earnestness of our guide and the walk through a Jewish neighborhood and back alleys. Recommend.

Highly recommend! We did the Beyond the Bagel tour with Layla, and were incredibly lucky that it was just the two of us and Layla on our tour. We learned so much and walked away stuffed! Layla was so fun and attentive (she made sure we had places to sit, shady spots to stand, that we were away from trash bins and traffic, that we got bathroom breaks as needed, etc) and such a wealth of information. I walked away with a list of books to read and restaurants to visit on top of everything we learned on our tour.
This group and the tour was fantastic, and a lot of thought and time was obviously invested in ensuring the content is always improving and changing as more is learned. The price of the tour seemed almost cheap in retrospect, considering how much food we sampled on the tour as well! We’ll be recommending to anyone visiting Montreal, and hope to visit and do the tour again soon. Thanks to the Museum team and to Layla for a wonderful day!

A well worthwhile learning experience of the history, culture, influences, challenges and accomplishments of the Montreal Jews. Our guide was incredibly informative and passionate about the subject.

Hanna was knowledgeable, organized and full of entertaining stories. The photos and text in the binder were an excellent source of material that she shared enthusiastically and reflected the consistency that the museum tour Director expects of the staff. She also showed great flexibility in adjusting to a route to accommodate the crowds on St. Lawrence. Thank you Hannah for a delightful experience!
PS we’ve done most of their other walking tours and they’ve all been of excellent quality, the only one of them will “fill you up“ on a literal level, instead of on a spiritual and intellectual level: the Beyond the Bagel food tour covers both culture, history and offers delicious nibbles over 3+ hours that leave you not hungry for supper after it is over!

This was a most enjoyable experience. We learned about the famous writers, rabbis, and social activists that came out of the cauldron of the neighborhood where Jewish immigrants came seeking a better life. Hannah, our guide, was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. She provided

My wife and I had a fabulous time last week ( May 27th ) on our walking tour. Rachel was our guide and she was warm, welcoming, knowledgeable and an all around GREAT guide! We learned of the history of the Jewish people of Montreal as well as origins and variety of Jewish foods of the area. After close to three hrs we sampled three bakeries, the two most famous bagel stores St Vieteur's and Fairmount , Wolensky's for kosher Salami sandwich and Schwartz's deli of course for smoked meats. Our fellow tour members were a great group too and fun to kibitz with .

This tour was great. I live in Montreal and I am a huge foodie. I thought the tour was enlightening and the choice of foods very good. A good way to learn about the Jewish roots in Montreal and eat at the same time. Rachel was my guide and she was excellent.

We experienced this tour with our guide Hannah on September 18th. The tour is very well researched, informative, and well paced. Hannah had many interesting anecdotes and was able to answer all of our questions. We had great weather and really enjoyed exploring this part of Montreal’s Jewish history through this engaging tour.

Virtual adaptation of "Making Their Mark" was fascinating during a time that it is not possible to visit the museum or Montreal in person. The tour guide and museum staff are very knowledgeable about the history of the Jewish community. They are also knowledgeable about how to use the chat to interact with the participants in a virtual community.

Q. For STAFF please,
I'm a member of Surfing. It is an on line site. I will be Surfing with a local from Montreal area. She is hosting me for four days & as a thank you I would like to bring her on this tour. She has not done it before even though she's been there 35 years. She has another Couch Surfer coming from Japan at the same time and communication is sketchy right now with the one from Japan. Since the lady from Japan responsible for her own ticket availability on short notice for her ticket and is it easy enough to add one to the group.?
Question number two is if we purchase it for her and she chooses not to participate could we get a refund? Thank you, Debra Debra

Hi Debra,
Thank you for your note!
- In response to your first question, yes it is usually easy to add one more person to a tour as long as we know about it at least 24hrs in advance.
- Unfortunately, we do not offer refunds unless there are special circumstances.
Please feel free to email us at tours[@]imjm[.]ca or call at 514 317 6580.
All my best & happy couch surfing!

The cost and if one of the 3 expected guests cancels do we get a refund?

The cost was around the $25 mark. Unsure about refund on cancellation. The tour was wonderful and worth every cent. It would be unfair to ask for refund as the cost covers the pay for the guide.

Hi there
I have a couple of questions please:
1. Do tours operate in January?
2. Do you take kids?
3. How long are the tours?
Thanks and regards

I know that the tours do not operate in winter; they go through October. Yes, they take kids- there was a 3-year-old in a stroller when we went. The tour is approximately 3-4 hours.

I am very puzzled by the reviews. I contacted the Museum via e-mail to get their hours and was told that it is a "virtual museum" that exists only online. I also inquired about tours of Jewish Montreal offered in late May and was told we'd have to hire a private guide since it was off season and it would be about $200 for about an hour for a private tour. Was I correctly informed? I also inquired about kosher restaurants in the area but that aspect of my question was not answered. We're leaving in less than 2 weeks, so advice from the TA community would be most appreciated.
