About
Crowning an ancient promontory above the Saint Lawrence River, once a campsite favoured by the Native peoples, a 300-year-old chapel, a museum of history and an archaeological site invite you to hear what they have to say about the people who founded Montreal. Through the achievements of Marguerite Bourgeoys, a woman of courage and compassion who lived in 17th-century Montreal, you will find yourself transported back through time to another world, that of our ancestors.

The museum was short but well curated. It offered a more Roman Catholic perspective of Montreal’s history. The lookout is surely one to impress.

The museum entrance is right to the side of the chapel, we did the self-guided tour and while the museum was lovely, especially the room dedicated to schools, I was disappointing that we weren't able to access all areas (specifically, the tower was closed when we were there)

In one area there was an employee just standing there watching people which was off-putting.

Large bright gift shop with many books & religious artefacts as well as other non-religious items.

What an inspiring museum. You see the story of Marguerite-Bourgeoys life, starting in France, traveling to the new community of Montreal, starting a religious community devoted to education, social justice, and women's rights. Well worth the CAD 14

The museum is an act of praise to Marguerite Bourgeoys, and her many good works. The topic is narrow, but they make the most of it and in a professionally curated manner. Be sure to visit the Lookout (many steep steps, but worth it) and the crypt. They were highlights. Helpful staff. Clean toilets.

A beautiful church and museum that is free to go to. So much history and culture and utterly photographable ... known as the sailor's church and a lovely place to go on a hot day!

We did not visit the museum itself, just the tower. Because of its proximity, you get a very good look at St. Lawrence River, the Old Port, the clock tower, the round dome of Marche Bonsecours, etc. If you enjoy a birds-eye view of the Old Port, the tower is well worth the time and effort.

There were exhibits on the life of Marguerite Bourgeoys and little miniature scenes of her whole life. Next, a tour guide took me down into the archaelogical site below the chapel. Recently, they have found the remains of the original chapel, constructed in 1675, that was destroyed by a fire. Back upstairs, there was also a temporary exhibit full of the paper sculptures of artist, Claude Lafortune. Next, I climbed up the top of the tower, which has the highest view of Old Montreal. It was a diverse little museum, and I definitely recommend it.

Great little museum, very informative. Especially loved the guided archaeological tour, the guide, Charlotte, was obviously loved showing the secrets below the church and was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Don't miss the climb up the tower, great views.

My husband had added this to the itinerary almost as an after thought, however it truly is a hidden gem. The views from the tower, over Montreal and the Lawrence river are outstanding, and to be able to get so close to the copper angels, really does make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
However there is more. The true stand out moment, is when you go in the crypt, and see the foundations to the old chapel with the guided tour. Well worth it,

I’m not sure what all went into the museum, but I did enjoy quickly visiting the chapel and taking in the atmosphere. It was free to walk into the chapel but you may choose to leave a donation. The chapel is small and elegant. The unique feature I was most intrigued to see were the wooden ship chandeliers. This place is located next to the Bonsecours Market on St Paul St on the northern edge of the main Old Montreal area. It is a nice part of a walking tour of Old Montreal but no necessarily the reason to head to the neighborhood.
