Reasonably useful to get around, particularly if the weather is bad. Cleaner than many American subway systems. Prices are comparable with other major cities, although compared to, say, NYC, there isn't a lot of information readily available about how the system is organized, how passes do or do not work with city buses, etc. Most information that is available in the stations is in French. I highly recommend an app to help you navigate (I used CityMapper.)
Two big issues that I see.
1) Very few stations have lifts or working escalators, making navigating the system with any kind of mobility device or stroller a pain. And it's a deep system, so climbing multiple flights of stairs is often required. Strangers will often come forward to help get folks up stairs, but the metro overall really, really needs to work on accessibility.
2) There is very little security around and panhandlers can get aggressive. I, for example, made the foolish mistake of letting my guard down and opening my wallet to purchase a pass with a credit card at one of the machines. Stupid, I know: should have kept my wallet safely stowed and only had the credit card in my hand before I ever entered the station. (Montreal is generally pretty safe, and I think that gave me a false sense of security). Anyway, a young woman who was next to me, hassling me for change, saw what I was doing, leaned over, and was able to snatch a 20$ bill out of my open wallet and run off. There was no security present to report it to, and given the small amount, I didn't bother hunting an officer down to try. I'm writing the experience off as a lesson learned. Be smarter than me, and keep both eyes open!

First time using the Metro in Montreal.
It was easy to use with a 24 hour pass costing only $10.00. An easy way to get around the city. Underground stops where really nice with high ceilings. We enjoyed every Metro stop on our trip. Be adventurist, you must try the Metro.

Forget renting a car, parking is a royal pain and paying everywhere with meter maids making regular rounds. If you insist on a car, here's a little hint: Before you march to the pay machine, look at the black pole with the blue code on it on the sidewalk, you need your parking spot number to book parking, saves from walking twice. The metro gets you into every corner of the city with buses allowing for further travels and both run on regular schedules. Prices are reasonable, a 3 day pass for the city is just CAD 21.25 for unlimited travel in zone A.

We were recommended to use the Metro by a couple who we met in a local cafe. It saved us a lot of walking and, at 20$C for 24 hours for 2 people, it was great value, comfortable, clean and on time. We used it to travel from downtown to Atwater and then to the Botanical Gardens. Brilliant!

The Montréal Métro is attractive, clean, and easy to use. We loved the colorful tile designs in each station. We were never crowded in a platform or in a carriage, never felt unsafe at all, and we easily transferred when needed. The only thing for us was not being sure which exit to the streets was best for our destination.

Remember the metro ticket includes the bus. The upper seats in the bus have frosted windows so you cannot see the city as you ride, but you can see out from the lower seats, which is a great way to admire Montreal’s neighborhoods.

Workers at the STM Metro stations are the most rude, arrogant and least helpful bunch of people that you will encounter anywhere. Don't expect any help and don't expect any politeness. They have for years earned their reputation of being rude and obnoxious particularly to English speaking customers.

Always best to avoid interacting with their employees and only use the self serve stations when possible.

How these people continue to be employed in an industry that is the front line of tourism is incredible.

Métro de Montréal is an efficient mass transit system and serves the downtown and greater Montréal areas. The metro is operated  by Société de transport de Montréal and officially began services in 1966. Initially there were 22 stations but since the system expanded there are now 68 stations on four lines.

We have used the metro on every visit to the city and find the system to be extremely well maintained, reliable and smooth mainly due to the trains running on rubber-tyres. There is one notable quirk at Victoria Square where there is a Parisian Metropolitan sign and entrance, it was installed in 1967 to celebrate the collaboration with Parisian engineers on the construction of the metro.

On our most recent visit in January 2023 we used the metro on several services on the Orange and Green lines and had no major issues.

This so called transit service, marred for years by extremely bad management, needs a complete overhaul, from the bottom up. Since the self serve ticket kiosks were installed, I have experienced many instances of convenient 'malfunctions'. That is, the machine not ejecting the paid for ticket, or shortchanging. My friend had a similar experience, losing two fares in a row. Customer service, if you can call it that, dodged requests for reimbursement with nonsense talk about 'invalid ticket numbers'. If this were truly a malfunction, how come the machine does not also give too much change back? To make matters worse, the STM Opus, and 'L'occasionale cards seem to be remotely deactivated once the first fare is used up. The customer is effectively robbed of their remaining service. This is plainly a policy initive, not bungling service as the STM claims. They force customers to use the kiosks, guaranteeing the latter will be cheated at some point. To top this off, at both Cabot Square and Berri metro entrances, gang activity congregates on the escalators, out of sight of security. This becomes a sketchy gauntlet for riders leaving the stations. Presumably, STM staff are too busy hoodwinking customers out of extra money to bother with assuring their safety.

Organized, easy to use and useful, for those who don't have a car and are touring Montreal, the city's Metro system is very good and easy to use. However, it does not reach places in the city's suburbs, so plan your trip carefully to see if you buy a 1-day or 3-day ticket. Which also gives access to the bus service.

Use the ticket machines in station to buy a card which can be loaded for one or two trips or as a pass for a day or 3 days. Decide which line and which direction and just follow signs. Trains are every 5 to 10 mins and pretty clean inside. Its easy to change from one line to another. Hardest part is finding the stations and exiting on the right road! I used them solo for 3 days and never felt concerned.
