Named after the Governor General of Canada from 1872 to 1878, Lord Dufferin. Make sure to walk the ‘Promenade des Gouverneur’s’ when you visit Quebec.
I like to plan my trip and prepare where to start and which spots will come as my day progresses.
I had 2 options to visit the Plains of Abraham
1) from Saint Louis st, and
2) From Governors’ Promenade- I chose this
At 655m long with 308 steps it makes for one of the most memorable walks you will take when you visit Quebec. The ‘promenade’ takes you from Terrasse Dufferin. It connects the boardwalk in front of the Chateau Frontenac to the southernmost point of the Citadel to the Plains of Abraham. It hangs off Cap-Diamant. The Dufferin Terrace is close to the famous Chateau Frontenac hotel, the Funicular, and the Breakneck Stairs that connect Upper Town to Lower Town.
The elevated promenade stretches along the Citadel with the fortification wall on one side, and a gorgeous view of the St. Lawrence River on the opposite side. You can start at either end of the boardwalk. This is a great free activity where you can get some exercise, enjoy the scenery, and make your way from one destination to another.
Walking the Governors’ Promenade usually ensures that you climb a whole bunch of uphill staircases and steps – at least over 300 (You can do vice versa as well) start from the Plains of Abraham and come to the boardwalk but normally you start the day from the famous spot so it's highly unlikely you will climb down
Governors’ Promenade is- where the Citadel meets the Plains of Abraham park along the cliff edge. The Battle of Abraham was fought here many years ago; now, the area is a sprawling park with many picnic tables and trees. The Plains of Abraham is a great place to relax or have a picnic in the sunshine.
Moreover, from this vantage point, you will take hundreds of pictures. It makes for breathtaking views of the St-Lawrence River, the Ile d”Orleans, and the city.

You can start the Governors’ Walk by the Battlefields Park also called the Plains of Abraham or by the Dufferin Terrace. Be aware that the Promenade has several landings, lookouts and 310 steps. It is physically easier to start with the Battlefields Park as you descend all the way down.
This beautiful Promenade wanted to mark the 350th anniversary of the founding of Québec City in 1958. It was inaugurated in 1960. The Promenade suspended above Cap-Diamant allows us to contemplate the imposing walls of the Citadel. The view of the river, the south shore, Lévis, the Île d'Orléans and the Côte de Beaupré allows us to take magnificent photos.

We walked from our hotel, Le Capitole, to View point Saint Laurent River so that we could see the beautiful views from the gazebo there before descending to Dufferin Terrace along the lovely promenade. We much preferred walking down instead of starting at Dufferin Terrace and walking up. Gorgeous views.

This is an up and down climb (mainly up), which runs from the end of the Terrasse Dufferin to the Plains of Abraham in Quebec City. In addition to it being a nice little workout, it affords some good views of the St. Lawrence River. Finally, it is certainly one way to get over to the Plains of Abraham.

There are good views across the river. I took the walk from Dufferin Terrace, behind the Chateau Frontenac. There are some 300 steps, mostly heading up. It is in many places a boardwalk. Its entire length is 655 meters. It ends [or starts] near the Plains of Abraham. It was built in 1958 by the federal government in honour of the 350th anniversary of Quebec’s founding.

This is a beautiful well kept boardwalk with extraordinary views of the St Lawrence. There are sturdy staircases for each level. It was well cleared of snow and an easy walk. The top level would be a great place for a picnic in warmer weather.

It's a rather long walk with many stairs. It was November and there weren't many people around, so it was a bit uneasy for me, looking over my shoulder constantly. It takes you up to the Citadel area. The views are nice across the river.

On our last trip to this amazing city we took the la promenade des gouverneurs. It is located at the end if Duffrin terrace. It is a series of stairs and platforms along the side of the Citadele. You over look the river, lower Quebec and Levis. Amazing views and on a clear day you can see Ile d'Orleans. In the winter I advise to wear good boots. Stairs are kept clear but the view platforms can be snow packed. The stairs are not a steep climb so most people should be able to make it to the top. Which is located behind the Citadel in the Plains of Abraham. Very enjoyable and a must in any trip to Quebec.

As we drove into the city, we took the route that paralleled the Promenade. It was beautiful with separate walking and biking paths, and enough green space to play or picnic. We couldn't wait to walk it ourselves, which we did as it was so close to our hotel,

Check this out: Its long, grand, happening, and has been for hundreds of years. Here is the grande alle of Quebec city. Commanding views of the St Lawrence, old-town below, the port and its cruise ships and lake boats, the citadel above, and the grand old Chateau Frontenac. While you're here - check out the monument to Samuel de Champlain and google his history. Too cool.

Is there places to park in old Quebec?
Written February 21, 2018
There is metered street parking, and there are parking lots that you can pay for. We found the street parking challenging to find at times because it's very busy in certain areas. However, if you are going to be there for the day, the parking lots end up costing about the same, or even less than street parking. The parking lots charge a flat rate, and the meters are in 15 or 20 minute increments. We found a lot that was central to where we wanted to be, and parked there multiple days in a row. It was very convenient. Old Quebec City is a very walkable area, so it's easy to get around once you park. We really enjoyed it!
