We made a quick stop here while in Whitehorse. The canyon and Yukon River are stunning. I think this area is closed during winter months, so check before going.

Natural attractions don’t always look as good in real life as they do in photos, but Miles Canyon is not one of those places. We visited on a cloudy, smoky evening and found it to be just as beautiful as we thought it would be. Lots of trails for hiking and biking that (I assume) connect back to Whitehorse so you don’t have to drive if you don’t want to.

My husband and I took the short drive from Whitehorse to here. We had no issues finding a parking spot. It was free to explore. This is a beautiful canyon with water running below. A suspension bridge allows you to cross the canyon. Boats were running through the water. A few were also swimming. A trail runs along the canyon's edge. Several other longer trails are available.

Awesome views just a short ride from Whitehorse. Easy to get to. Several trails to along the river, and you can hike to the top of the island. Can easily spend an hour or more there, or you can enjoy the view from the parking lot and be on your way. A must do if you're in the area.

Easy to find with somewhat limited parking (don’t bring anything too large, or a trailer) this is a nice spot to visit the gorge. The steps down from the parking area can be somewhat of a challenge - they are in need of repair or replacing. The view of the gorge is nice, and the walk across the bridge is pleasant with hiking trails to the left and right.

Did a quick trip out to the suspension bridge after dinner and I was very impressed. Super cool activity to do for zero dollars. Minor heart palpitations when people got too close to the edge. Looks way too easy to fall over the edge and then be stuck in the canyon is ice cold water. But enough about that … columnar basalt is one of my favourite things! The canyon is beautiful, the bridge bouncy and the water turquoise! Lovely trail system as well. An excellent place to spend an hour or so.

Beautiful! The turquoise water was mesmerizing! Parking was a little dicey but totally worth the effort! The little bridge makes for a great photo opportunity.

How far is the walk from the parking lot to the suspension bridge? Distance, difficulty and time?

The walk is not far, around 5 minutes, but it does involve going down a staircase and then walking on the natural surface of the rock canyon - not paved. Not difficult but not wheelchair accessible.

Hi there, how can I drive to Miles Canyon in winter time having noted that the road is closed? I plan to visit the canyon and see the suspension bridge in early February. Is it possible and safe to drive there around mid-night to see the northern light in the Miles Canyon area? Thanks in advance for reply and info.

Its a very short drive from the Alaska highway to the parking lot near the bridge so it might be possible but I don't know if they keep that road open. Maybe you can walk from the highway instead.

Not sure what as you saw but we took a cruise with Captain Kens Adventures. We were more than happy with the experience. Captain Ken was very informative.

How do I get there using public transportation?

Yes I agree, there are no buses that go there. If you cannot rent a vehicle then a cab would be the only alternative. It is a breath taking view of the Yukon River with a suspension bridge below that if you can drive there you will be able to walk across the bridge and rock it if you like swaying! At night during the season when the Aurora borealis is visible, it is a great place away from city lights!

Would we be able to drive into Miles Canyon area with a 40ft motor home? Not a lot of clearance on this RV/bus.

Yes, you can. There are tour busses that go down all the time, and I personally drove a 112 passenger bus down when I worked for summer camps. The trick is to not park in the lower parking lot that gets really tight with other cars. I would advise parking on the side of the area that is just before the parking lot. tour busses tend to stop here, and it provides enough clearance to get out as well.

hello polonajaki, you can find Miles Canyon a short distance from downtown Whitehorse, travelling south out of town in the summer you can take the route alone the lake or continue to the highway and south to the "look out" of the canyon. It is a good walk into the river, you can cross Yukon River on the foot bridge and hike to Canyon City to explore the site of a stop the river boats would make on the way to the gold fields. You can also rent a canoe and paddle up river to the canyon if you are experienced, the Yukon is a strong river. Highly recommend this day trip.
