Statue of a prominent local fellow on Front Street near the MacBride Museum. Read the description and walk on. Nicely constructed.

Located just outside the MacBride Museum, this handsome bust of Erik Nielsen is a fairly new addition to the streets of Whitehorse. Commissioned and donated by Rolf and Marg Hougen, who both wished to see a greater recognition of important Yukon figures, the sculpture was created by Harreson Tanner and unveiled in 2020.

Who was Erik Nielsen and why was a bust commissioned in his honour? Thankfully, the stone upon which the bust rests contains a helpful information plaque. Amongst other things, we learn that Nielsen was a decorated pilot with the RCAF during World War II. Then, after the war concluded, he went on to become the Yukon’s long-serving Member of Parliament from 1957 to 1987. After Nielsen died in 2008, the Whitehorse International Airport was re-named in his honour – an apt tribute since he played a key role in securing funding for the modern airport edifice during his final years as a federal politician. Erik Nielsen was also the older brother of famed comedic actor Leslie Nielsen (“Don’t call me Shirley!”).

There are a total of nine bronze busts of famous Yukoners strategically placed around Whitehorse. Erik Nielsen is one of them. I really tip my hat to this initiative of recognition because, all too often, I think our country is a little too modest when it comes to paying homage to important figures from our past, especially at the local and regional level. Through these bronze busts, Yukoners and tourists get to learn a little more about this place and space and why it is so special.
