About
Based out of Whitehorse and run by two french people whom graduated with a conservation biology degree, Terre Boreale offers canoe trips, hiking trips and discovery tours in Yukon and Alaska in both French and English. Besides discovering the breath taking landscapes and colours of the North, our background allows us to provide an experience as close to the wilderness as possible through its observation, understanding and preservation. Because we want all our customers to have a unique experience we limit our group size to 6 customers per trip. This group size also allows us to travel the wilderness with high chances of viewing wildlife without disturbing it. Every one has different travel expectations, therefore Terre Boreale offers customized trips in Yukon and Alaska in all seasons.

With my wife and two kids (16, 19) we did the Southern Yukon day hike tour. We have enjoyed various day-hiking trips in in other parts of the world, but this was the first guided one and it was truly the trip of a lifetime.
First, the region (Kluane National Park, Southern Lakes) is stunning. We were fortunate to have decent weather in early August on most days, and were rewarded with tremendous views. Over the course of the week we saw a lot of wildlife, including Dall Sheep, mountain goats, a lynx, Arctic Ground Squirrels, a Golden Eagle (and many other birds), as well as five black bears and five grizzly bears (all the bears were seen from the comfort of the Terre Boreale van).
The natural beauty was enhanced by the expert knowledge of our guides, Max and Edouard. Max has a masters in conservation biology, with an impressive knowledge of the flora and fauna of the region. I learned so much about these larger animals but also the plants along the trails, the birds, the geological history of the area, etc. This was expanded with some visits to local museums and interpretive centres, where we learned about the First Nations peoples, there clan system, traditions and history.
On the hiking, having two guides for a small group (6 guests) was truly valuable, as the faster hikers were able to go ahead (including our teenagers). The "kids" found Max and Edouard to be excellent guides as well, and were keen to hear of their experiences as guides and world travelers. Knowing they were in good hands heading off ahead in bear country was terrific.
Max and Edouard cheerfully managed every aspect of the trip, which was impressively organized and prepared with an eye to zero waste principles. The dedication of this company to environmental responsibility is apparent in every detail.
Food was plentiful and delicious, even gourmet on some days. One day my daughter picked a few cups of wild blueberries during our lunch break and that evening we enjoyed a splendid baked blueberry dessert courtesy of our guides' culinary skills (I think it doesn't hurt that they are from France).
Accommodations were very nice and we enjoyed getting to know the guides and our fellow guests in the shared environments.
I recommend this trip to anyone who wants to experience these areas of the Yukon, but wants to enjoy relaxing comfort after days spent exploring.

I recently returned from Terre Boreale's 'Day Hiking in Southern Yukon' tour. It is the perfect tour for anyone who wants to hike the Yukon without having to carry a heavy pack and prefers a solid roof over their head rather than a tent. We were first based near Haine's Junction in a private house and for the second half of the tour in cozy cabins on Little Atlin lake. Guides Max and Ed prepared all the meals for us, a professional chef could not have done it better! The hikes ranged from fairly challenging to more relaxed, but were always beautiful. On the two rainy days Max and Ed modified the itinerary to avoid the worst of the rain. In the end, even those days were very interesting and totally satisfying. In addition to guiding us safely on various hikes, the guides also shared their deep love and respect for the land we were travelling on. I recommend Terre Boreale to any interested hikers without hesitation.

Completely recommended!
I took the Ruby Range hiking and camping trip in June.
Everything was great, starting with the communication to schedule and organize the trip, continuing with the punctuality of all the members of Terre borrale, the excellent guidance of Edouard (our hiking mountain guide), every food was home made and felt heart warming and nutritious, the helicopter ride and the views of the mountains in the range during the daily hikes, camping in the wild, the flora and the fauna left me amazed.
The staff and experience provided by Terre Borrale was very professional and at the same time very friendly. I'm looking forward to going on other trips with them.

I can’t say enough about our experience this summer with Terre Boreale. My son and I experienced a six day adventure in the Coast Mountains with Max.
This company really lives the leave no trace and respect for our environment to the fullest extent, from homemade meals, to wildlife viewing and routes without human impacted trails.
Every day captured inspiring challenges, both physical and mental, with rewarding views that photos just couldn’t justify.
We both learned so much over the course of our trek. It was gratifying to build on our knowledge, yet empty our minds of regular life at home.
We would highly recommend Terre for anyone interested in this kind of adventure - you will not regret it!

I did the Ogilvie Mountains traverse with Terre Boreale. The trip was outstanding ( although I would not recommend it to beginner hikers, as it does require some mental and physical toughness), the organization was perfect and the guides (Ed and Dan) could not have been better. There was a profound sense of love and respect for the environment The food provided was outstanding, all dehydrated, provided in home made sacks - so no plastic was used. This definitely rates amongst some of the best backpacks I have ever done ( and I have done many, in several parts of the world...). Thank you, Max and Milena, for maintaining such high standards, to Dan an Ed for an outstanding 8 days and to Marc-Andre for smooth and safe driving!

Max organized a great two week self-guided car trip for my wife and I up the Dempster Highway to Tuktoyaktuk including visits to Whitehorse, Tombstone Territorial Park, Inuvik, Dawson City and Kluane National Park. We thoroughly enjoyed the magnificent scenery and nature of the Yukon and NWT.
Our plane trip to the Mt. Logan ice field and our stay at Kluane Cabins was very special and our hosts were very accommodating.
We did a combination of camping, cabins and hotels and Max did a great job organizing this for us and providing the camping gear.
Thank you very much Max. This trip exceeded our expectations and we hope to be back some day.

I cannot recommend Max enough!! Seeing the lights has been a lifelong dream for me, and leading up to the trip I was stressing as the forecast was not looking great and I may come all this way to not see anything! Max identified the most likely evening we may see the lights that we were in town, and helped us shuffle plans to make sure we got out on the most likely night. Unbeknown to me, he was also organising my proposal with my better half behind the scenes! His knowledge of the area, wilderness, astronomy / astrology and the lights is incredible. His passion for his job SHINES through and makes for an amazing evening. The groups are small, we were actually on our own, which brings a great personal feel to it all. The fact that he will move to various locations trying to find the best spot for the lights was also a HUGE winner for me! We have an incredible memory (and photos, hes a great photog!) of our engagement and realizing my lifelong dream, and I am grateful to Max for that! We hope to be back to do a summer hiking trip with him and his wife soon :)

Had a great adventure in the Yukon mountains with our tour guides Max and Dan from Terre Boreale. They were always encouraging and matching our pace and were very knowledgeable about the landscape. We experienced multiple terrains, creek crossings, short and long hikes, summits and valleys during our 6 days in the wilderness. I would recommend them wholeheartedly if you are looking for professional and knowledgeable guides to take you on your adventure into the back country.

I canoed down the Upper Liard River with Terre Boreale in July of 2023. It was a nice river with lovely campsites and clear water. The food was great, the equipment supplied was first class and our guide Marc worked extremely hard to keep us comfortable, well fed and safe.

Awesome trip with Max up the Dempster Highway, past the Arctic Circle to the border with NWT. Beautiful scenery and different moods with the weather and the time of day and the changing light. The Arctic tundra and the Ogilvie Mountains were spectacular. The huge trucks every now and then provided an unexpected added interest.
Max was a great guide - very easy to be with, very knowledgeable and ultra accommodating to requests for photo stops (day and night). Always on the lookout for wildlife .... try as we might we didn't see any moose but we did happen to see some birdlife, elk, red fox and a lynx! The Northern Lights weren't on show but seeing the mountains in the full moonlight at midnight was a bonus. The winter clothing which was provided kept us nice and warm at sub zero temperatures - minus 27' was a new experience for us coming from New Zealand!
Would totally recommend this trip with Terre Borreale. Thanks Max.

Hi! I have the chance to travel next year between Febreary and June. When do you think it’s the best time to travel to Yukon and get to see the northern lights? Let me know! Need recommendation 😊
Written July 23, 2019
Hi Kiara,
Thanks for getting in touch with us at Terre Boréale! Between February and June, I'd say that your best chance is February and March.
As Andree and Samantha mentioned in their response (thanks to you both), we can put together a custom trip if you'd like and we can help you get in touch with the winter clothing rental company in Whitehorse.
To go further with your project, I invite you to contact us directly via email.
Thanks!
Max
