From the moment one of the owners, Jeff, and his four-legged co-pilot Little One met us at the Whitehorse airport, we knew that Muktuk Adventure’s description as “A Place for People who Love Dogs” is the truth they live by.
The lodge where we stayed has the rustic charm of a real off-the-grid, environmentally friendly and super comfortable log cabin in the Northern wilderness. The rooms are so cozy and neatly decorated, just what we needed for a long, relaxing sleep after staying up watching the fantasy that is the Aurora Borealis from the cabin’s deck, accompanied by two of the friendly resident dogs. The food, hand made by Manuela, is delicious, healthy, and so abundant, that we felt absolutely spoilt. They also cater to vegetarians and will go the extra mile to accommodate the guests’ every need.
The activities they offer are exactly what we dreamed of. We had a fun, fast paced ride with some of the sled dogs, whose enthusiasm is contagious; they could barely wait to start pulling the vehicle. It is very reassuring for dog lovers like us, to see how the owners respect and care for their dogs, and we even had the chance to help harness, feed, and water the dog team before and after the ride. Later we had a walk to the Takhini river with Jeff and a bunch of non-working dogs and an afternoon visit to the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, with our own expert and knowledgeable guide Manuela, who showed us and told us the story of amazing arctic wild animals we had seen only on documentaries! They have their own wide, natural space, up close yet safe for them and the visitors.
Muktuk Adventures is perfect to immerse yourself in the real Canadian North, to share the love for dogs and nature in comfort, safety and a home-like place where you wish you could stay forever.

We did the full day dog sledding tour and it was AMAZING. We were picked up from our hotel, outfitted with winter gear, and introduced to our dog sled team of 6 dogs. We took turns being the driver and passenger in the sled, it was easy and fun to do! Each dog had such unique personalities, and were very well taken care of, with booties for their feet being put on and off. We stopped for lunch over a campfire and made our way back over gorgeous scenery by the river. Out tour guide leader was amazing, she checked in frequently and worked hard to make sure that us and the dogs were well taken care of!

We did the half day dog sledding trip and it was excellent. Vicki our guide was amazingly energetic and fun to have as a guide! She was patient and extremely helpful with the group. It was a great time on the lake. Wish we had gone longer!

We did the full day takhini river dog sledding tour.
The whole experience was amazing ! We got down the river with our team of 5 dogs, we were 3 teams + the guide. The tour was ok for us as we never did dog sledding before. In the middle of the tour we had lunch (hot dogs cooked on a fire), it was great.
We had a really good experience with the dogs that were very cuddly and nice !
The guide did some breaks to let the dogs and the drivers rest a bit !
We will definitely come back !
A little gift shop or something could be great !

She picked us up at the hotel and drove us back after the tour, and was very engaging and pleasant to speak with.

During her overview of the dog sled, she was very patient, and easy to understand. During the sled ride up the river and back, she drove a snowmobile in front of the dog teams, and stopped a few times during the two hour tour, to give the dogs a rest before resuming.

Half way through the ride, we had to do a big loop on the river to head back on the same trail again. She had told us that if the sled falls over, to HANG ON to it, or the dogs will keep running with it. During the circle loop, the right side of our sled dug into the fresh deeper snow and rolled us over on the side. She came running back to us and said I did a great job hanging on to the sled! She got it upright and out of the snow, which was a bit difficult. I had trouble walking out of because I kept sinking down and falling back into it! All in all, it was a great experience, and we appreciated Vicky’s friendly and positive attitude.

I just returned from an 8-day stay with Manuela and Jeff from MukTuk Adventures. My adventures with them far exceeded all of my expectations. I would HIGHLY recommend a visit to MukTuk to anyone wishing to experience a bit of the Yukon and the amazing sport of dogsledding with well-loved and amazing dogs. Their adventures in spring, summer, and fall look great too!

The most striking feature, noted from the first review of their website but very obvious from the moment you arrive on site, is the palpable passion they have for their dogs. They have numerous well-cared for and well-loved working dogs and retired dogs, and one particular omnipresent and omnipotent “top dog” called “Little” (indicative of stature, not attitude). They really really do care, as evidenced by the cuddles and praise they give the dogs constantly, and the unadulterated looks of pure adoration that all of the dogs give to them.

I had never participated in dogsledding activities in the past and had a bit of trepidation about doing it over several days. But I can assure you that it was an awesome experience. Jeff and MukTuk staff are all excellent and patient instructors. The dogs were incredible and so happy to be pulling. It is definitely not a passive activity -- you will work (!) but there was nothing but joy in being outside in such beautiful wilderness with a dog team you come to trust, love and respect. I definitely built a bond with my dog team.

The accommodations are beautiful on a property with breath-taking scenery. MukTuk also offers a lot of other outdoor winter activities on their property and in the surrounding area. Our bedroom and bathroom were perfect - spacious and comfortable and extremely clean. There was a lot of attention to detail to make guests comfortable and welcomed. The lodge has everything you could want, including musical instruments, tons of books, loads of games, many different sitting areas (couches shared with a dog or three!), great artwork and pictures on the walls, refrigerator for your personal beverages, and a kitchen to die for. Everything is extremely comfortable and clean and welcoming.

Manuela is a skilled and gifted chef! She served food you would expect out of a fine restaurant – plentiful, thoughtfully prepared, quality ingredients, healthy, and artistically presented. She seamlessly accommodated some challenging dietary restrictions of other guests. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the meals we were served, both in-lodge and over a campfire while camping.

I was impressed with the quality of the equipment and clothing MukTuk provided. The clothing was name-brand and in excellent condition. It was all warm and clean, and they were able to accommodate special requests. Absolutely LOVED those winter boots. Rest assured that you will not be cold if visiting in the winter. Their equipment was also top-notch. Everything from the sleds and harnesses, blankets and booties, to the tents and camping equipment were in great shape and working order. And those winter sleeping bags were absolutely the best!

I very much enjoyed the opportunity to be as hands-on with the dogs as I wanted to be. MukTuk staff are very generous with their time and knowledge. I particularly loved dog feeding time. Just being out in the yard with the dogs and assisting with their care was a special experience of its own. Rest assured you can get right into it if you want – and I really appreciated the opportunity to do that. It is hard work but spending time with the dogs was oh-so rewarding.

There were so many personal touches, too. Loved that they took professional-grade action-photos of us while dogsledding on the trails. They have a “Northern Lights” gong to sound when the sky is dancing and gave us perfect pictures when we were blessed to see the lights. So very thoughtful of MukTuk to provide those mementos. Personal touches were also evidenced by the interest they took in each guest individually, sharing special DVDs with us in the evening when we wanted to learn more about the Yukon Quest and Iditarod, and the personal care and attention they provided to us when we had concerns of any kind.

Overall, MukTuk is an amazing company run by genuinely good and hard-working people with a palpable love for their dogs and the adventures they offer. I hope to return to them soon to do a canoeing adventure. You won’t be disappointed at all with MukTuk. I hope you love your time there and have as much fun as I did.

What an amazing experience!

Manuela, Jeff and their dedicated team have created a homey and welcoming atmosphere for everyone. The lodge is beautiful with private, clean rooms and a host of furry friends in the common spaces. Muktuk creates amazing home-made dishes and can accommodate a variety of diets, including plant based.

The winter camping and dog sledding guides are very knowledgeable and excited to set their guests up for success camping and with the dogs. The Muktuk team takes exceptional care of all their dogs and you can tell they have a passion for sharing their love of dogs with their guests.
