Point Bonita today is part of the largest urban national park in the United States, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. A secret jewel of the Bay Area, Point Bonita is still an active lighthouse. The U.S. Coast Guard maintains the lighthouse and the National Park Service provides access to visitors.

Point Bonita Lighthouse is reached by a half mile trail that is very steep in parts. Discover Point Bonita's wild landscape, geology and fascinating history. The tunnel halfway to the lighthouse is open only during visiting hours: Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

This lighthouse is at the very northwest tip of land just north of the Golden Gate. The location is dramatic and the views back to the City are truly unique. It's about a 20 minute drive West from 101 and then a 15 minute easy walk from the parking lot. To actually reach the lighthouse you walk over a small... More

Be sure to get there about 30 min before it opens otherwise there will be long lines. Be sure to bring camera! One mile roundtrip walk, kids and adults all loved! Free fun!!!

Love the ocean and Golden Gate Bridge views from this location! While we were there, we saw several sea lions swimming in the water below and huge waves crashing into the rocks on the ocean side.

Great site to visit, you would need at least 3 hours from SF Town to drive & walk the area a bit. The view is amazing, best to go on sunny days!

First remember that the Lighthouse only opens Sat - Mon. The views are amazing, the short bridge walk to the Lighthouse is good and there are just 49 people allowed at a time. The sea is spectacular - sadly we didn't see whales but maybe next time. Parking is a bit tight so park way back and walk it's worth... More

I visited this place last year but I am here again to enjoy the beautiful sunny day, the wild flowers strewn around, lots of them, wild cabbage all over the hills and the clear view of the bay and Golden Gate Bridge. There was a huge crowd. If you go inside the lighthouse (through the narrow and short bridge), please... More

Great views of the city. Good hiking trials nearby. Parking is within walking distance. Close to Picnic area and restrooms. No restroom at light House. No services . Tunnel to get out to light House only open Saturday, Sunday, Monday 12:30-3:00. Get there early to avoid crowds and waiting. They only let so many in at a time to cross... More

After lots of visits to Point Bonita I finally was able to cross the tunnel and visit the lighthouse. Please be aware the light house is open only certain days and for a certain amount of hours. It's a gorgeous view of San Francisco, and a great piece of history! Just an awesome experience crossing the bridge to the lighthouse.

There was a major storm the day before so they closed the tunnel to the lighthouse which we were very bummed about. But it was still worth the amazing drive to the site and there was still lots to see. We didn't have our kids with us but they would have loved this place. Lots of abandoned military structures to... Despite living in the Bay area for over 25 years, we never knew about this place! We literally stumbled on this location on internet and thought of visiting.. It was raining and stormy weather last week when we visited. But the rains and wind added to the charm of this place. Got to see some very beautiful views and the... More
