- Let's Go SightseeingNoida, India2,910 contributionsStupendous ArchitectureWe drove to a high plateau from where a forest path led us to the Temple. The path wasn’t an incline and quite easy to navigate. We ambled along, talking, taking in the sights. ‘Tara’ stands for a single point of light that helps one navigate. The Temple is 250+ years old. It is surrounded by red religious flags. Its precincts are quite huge with facilities like shops also available. We removed our shoes and climbed a few steps to reach the Temple. The first thing that struck us was how stupendous its architecture was! The second thing was a delicate tree full of pink blossoms; what a sight! The third was the corking scenery in front of us. Being on a hilltop, you can see kilometers in every direction. Heaving mountains & green valleys stretched out in front of us. Standing on this hilltop, you can’t help imagining that Tara Devi is keeping an eye on all her disciples from here. Because of this sweeping view, the Temple isn’t just a pilgrim spot; it’s also frequented by tourists. The Temple is open every day (except special occasions) and its timings are 7 AM to 6:30 PM. If you visit on the Navratri Ashtami day, you can witness a grand worship as well as participate in a fair where you can also watch wrestling competitions!Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten May 24, 2024

The temple was built by King Bhupendra Sen atop the hill after he is said to have had a vision in which Goddess Tara Devi asked him to install a template there so that people could receive her blessings. He also installed a wooden statue of Goddess there. Tara Devi is worshipped as the Goddess of Compassion by the Buddhists also. The historic religious temple built over 250 years ago is visited by most tourists and locals.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 3, 2024

- VIPIN_GOEL_TP_ImpexNew Delhi, India8,238 contributionsTara Devi Temple is at 7200 feetA beautiful hill top temple in Shoghi town situated at 7200 feet (2195m). It is around 20km from The Lift Parking near The Ridge/ The Mall Road in Shimla. We drove around 6km from the Shimla main highway on to Shoghi Bypass. Last 2km of the drive is slightly adventurous as it is narrow road on a steep hill with curves to the temple. Once you reach temple, the 360 degree views are magnificent. We have to climb lots of stairs from parking to reach a newly rebuild beautiful temple having ‘Pahari” style wooden carvings. One can walk around or can relax in the open space around the temple to feel and enjoy the 2195m height in the hills. One can sit and meditate there as it is very peaceful here.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten August 11, 2024

Tara Devi temple is at a distance of around 15 kilometres from Shimla and when coming from Shimla side, a road cuts sharply towards the rear left side at an angle of 30 degrees with steep slopes near Shoghi. The road is very steep, very narrow but is metalled. Sufficient parking is available at the shrine.
This is a beautiful temple and has been extraordinarily maintained. Since situated on a hilltop, the views are good, but beware of monkeys. Leather items are not permitted inside. A bhandara is held here on Sundays and holidays.
worth visit.

Your visit to Shimla is incomplete if you don't visit this temple. Entire surrounding is heavenly. We performed puja & went around the temple. Also, you can pledge your wish to the Goddess & get prashad from Panditji.

If you want to go on a day trek, taradevi is the place in shimla for that. take shimla-kalka toy train from shimla and get down at Taradevi station (3rd stop). from Taradevi station, follow the trekking trail to the mandir.
The trekking trail traverse through ranges of Himalayan mountains with spectacular view of the slopes and the clouds descending through them. Stop by at certain locations to rejuvenate with fresh rain water that seeps through the rocks. The trekking trail is completely safe for family or couples.
You can take the same trail to return to the Taradevi station, or take a taxi from the road side to reach Shimla.

This is one of Shimla’s most-visited religious attractions. Situated at a distance of around 15 kilometres (around 45 minutes drive from Shimla railway station) from the city, the best way to hop across to the temple is via the Kalka-Shimla National Highway.
The Tara Devi Temple is perched atop a hill at a height of 1,851 metres above sea level. It is surrounded by greenery, which gives the place a serene and peaceful vibe.
The stunning backdrop of the Himalayas coupled with clean air makes it worth the trip.
It is a 250-year-old temple of Maa Bhagwati Tara Devi - a form of Goddess Durga.
Timings:
All days of the week
7:00 AM - 6:30 PM
Word of Caution:
Beware of monkeys.
Steep climb.
One has to pass through some hairpin bends.
Was under construction for quite some time, now the renovated temple is open for general public since July 20, 2018.
Special days:
For savouring mouth watering Himachali food, visit for lunch (Langar-free food) on Sunday/Tuesday.
Trekking:
Besides direct road accessibility, there is beautiful trek leading to temple through lush green forests.
Washrooms available.
Mobile signal-Decent.
Small shops for tea, coffee and snacks.
Puja shops available for buying puja stuff.

Just visited the temple complex yesterday, only to find out that the main temple sanctum has been closed for renovation. The idols have been shifted to a make shift room close to the temple. Here's hoping that the new structure is not something ugly and modern. And it manages to retain the old world charm we all associate this temple with. The project is expected to be completed in two and a half years atleast.

Firstly the main picture on this page is not of Tara Devi temple. Looks like some other Buddhist temple in HP. The temple is a located on a hill top. the views from the temple are mesmerizing. I must warn you that from where you park the car, There is along steep walk and about 200 hundred stairs. So if you have disabled and young children with you, please be careful. The place is generally very pleasant and windy. Keep woolens handy. There is a newly constructed Shiv temple a little behind the main temple. Do visit that when you are there. It is a must visit atleast once in your lifetime. The energy of the temple is rejuvenating.

What is the distance of main temple from Tara Devi station and it is possible to visit temple in waiting time of train as it is only 10 to 15 minutes
Written October 28, 2019
Hi Ashish,
i would like to visit this temple by train could you explain where exactly the station and how far it is from citicenter
Written September 8, 2016
The railway station is Shogi. The temple is quite a walk from the station though. Local taxis will be expensive. But see if you can google a local taxi stand and schedule something. We trekked the mountain to go to the temple and trekked down from the other side of the mountain to tara devi village. then we walked on the highway for a few kilometers till someone gave us a life till Shogi market.
Note: we had booked a homestay in Shogi, so we could trek both ways and walk back 50% of the way on the highway. so r case was different.
There are some local buses also that ply from Shogi main market to the temple. The trek by the road side uphill to the temple is also good; that is one option if you can trek on the road side. will be about 30 minute walk.
Hope this helps!
