Most tourists think Lumpini Park is as green as Bangkok gets, but hidden across the Chao Phraya River is the almost-island of Bang Krachao, known as the "green lungs" of the city. A 10-minute boat trip from Khlong Toey Port, it’s a vast area of unspoiled mangroves and orchards with little in the way of infrastructure. Many biking tours will organize trips to the area or you can go it alone and rent a bike when you get there.

I went along in November 2016. Not technically in Bangkok as such but also known as the green lungs of Bangkok. I rented a cycle near the Bang Krachao Pier for 50 baht and went exploring. I rode around the island for a few hours taking in some of the sights and views. All very relaxing. I then got to... More

We had no idea that this wonderful oasis existed until we went on a half-day cycling tour! Next time we are in Bangkok, we won't hesitate to take a boat over to the island, rent bicycles and explore at leisure. You could easily spend a day there. Due to strict building restrictions, the island is green and unspoilt, yet you... More

If you are fed up with the bustle of Bangkok, it is recommended you go here for a change. Bicycle rides for exercise. Nothing is special, but a place where the beauty of nature can be enjoyed!! BUT HURRY UP, before the 'Oasis' turns massacre!! Things are decaying. Many locals go for selfies and pics, not appreciation of nature. Car... More

Read so much about this green lung in Bangkok that was so near where I stayed but didn't get to visit until now! Totally enjoyable adventure. Rent your bicycles after you cross the river - you get more choices there! Only 80 baht for the whole day. The boat is about 10 or 20 baht. Get a map of the... More

The island is easy to get to. I took the MRT to Klong Toei, went out Exit 2, so I was on the correct side of the street. Took a moto taxi to the pier for 40 baht. It was 10 baht to use the ferry, the boat was big enough to carry bikes. I rented a bike on the... More

Open google map in satellite view, and look for a huge green area : that's it, you found bangkok green lungs. Take a taxi to Bang na pier, and then the 10 baht ferry to cross the river and here you are, no more heavy pollution, no more heavy noise ! Rent a bicycle for 100 baht the day, and... More

As mentioned, a lovely green countryside escape from the city within the city. You could prepare by taking a lunch (we had sandwiches) and bottled water (dissolving some rehydration tablets/powder in the water might help as on a very hot day, particularly when cycling). Sky train to Klong Toey station, taxi to Wat Klong Toey Pier (important as you could... More

We met a local friend at the pier to rent bikes and ride around on this little island. We were there on a weekday, so not busy at all, and we rented bikes right on the pier. It was 100 baht including our ferry crossing. It's about a five minute boat ride across, and it's like you are in another... More

Bang Krachao is no longer the "hidden gem" escape it once was, but it is still a very nice respite from the noise, pollution and hassles of Bangkok. Unless you're really intent on visiting the weekend market (I wasn't impressed), I strongly recommend that you visit Bang Krachao on a weekday, if possible. The "island" gets crazy with visitors on... More
