The French called it hell, and it's not hard to see why. The Verdun battlefield itself though is not just this area around Douaumont and it encompasses many forts and trenchlines that extend into surrounding towns and ruined towns for miles upon miles. Read ahead so you come here with a good understanding of what happened here. It will make the visit much more meaningful. Many forget there are remain an estimated up to 100,000 still missing in action in the surrounding hills, trench remnants and rubble. Be respectful.

We met Ingrid at the Museum on the Verdun Battlefield for a half day tour. She got in our car and we drove to the key battlefield sites following her directions. This is a much better option than driving yourself and it ensures you will see the main sites of the battle. Ingrid is friendly, polite and outgoing and is fluent in three languages. She is very knowledgeable and she recounted many stories that brought events to life as we drove and at the sites. We dropped Ingrid off in town and paid in cash.
This was a very good experience and we highly recommend taking this tour.

We did a private tour of the battlefields with Vincent Jacquot a WWI expert , we did a hike of about 10km's which in addition to learning and experiencing the battlefields were excellent exercise. The forest is amazing to walk through. Highlight was Fort of Douaumont , Village of Fleury , Ossuary and the memorial museum. It was an amazing day. If you are interested in war history this is a must see and should be added to your bucket list. We stayed in Verdun which is literally a 15 min drive to the memorial museum where you park to explore further

We had Ingrid Ferrand as a guide for the battlefields of Verdun. We rate her as one of the very best guides. Prior to the trip, she was responsive in our communications. During the trip, she was very knowledgeable, and shared not only the history, but also the personal events and exploits of soldiers. She was passionate about the history, and went out of her way to show us the actual German trenches at the Saillant de Saint-Mihiel when it wasn't officially part of the Verdun battlefields. We recommend her without any reservations whatsoever.

We did the Battlefield 1916 half-day tour. This was an excellent way to see the Verdun battlefields. Ingrid Ferrand took us to the destroyed village Fleury, Fort Douaumont, and the Douaumont Ossuary and Cemetery. Ingrid knows her subject and is a good story teller. She gets into your car with you and talks both while you are driving and at stops. Two tips: Make sure your car is big enough for an extra passenger. And she only takes cash, so makes sure you have enough.

We had a fabulous private tour with Ingrid Ferrand as our guide. We took the train from Paris and Ingrid met us at the station in Meuse. We then drove to Verdun to visit the Battlefield, Fort Douamont, Ossuary and Cemetery. Ingrid is extremely knowledgeable and we learned so much about this horrific battle. We then went on to Vauquois to the tunnels where battle took place underground. This was also very interesting, but definitely not for everyone (helmets and flashlights or headlamps needed). If you are adventurous, it is worth including in your itinerary. Any tour to Verdun or the Argonne should be done with Ingrid!

In November 2019, my husband and I (28 and 30 years old) had the pleasure of traveling around East France near Verdun to tour the places where many WWI battles took place. It was a bucket list experience for my husband to see first hand the 100 year old trenches and to explore around this part of he world. Ingrid was an exceptional host and we adored our time with her. She is an extremely knowledgable historian who has a passion for her career and for honoring history. She was gentle and kind and made sure we stayed safe during the entire day and even ensured that my husband was able to see the places that were most important to him. We visited the Douaumont Ossuary, Fort Douaumont, communication trenches, trenches in the S.t. Mihiel area (our favorite part!) and saw some of the lost villages along the way. We took a train directly from Paris to Meuse where we took a provided bus into Verdun where Ingrid met us. It was a very easy and doable day trip and I highly recommend contacting her if you wish to explore this area with a trustworthy and passionate person!

We arrived at sunset and we're practically alone in this solemn, beautiful place. If you're interested in WWI history, this is a destination you don't want to miss.

The Verdun battlefield is a deeply moving place to be. To actually walk over the hills where the longest battle of WW 1 blazed and so much carnage took place is disturbing, but certainly memorable and enlightening.

My wife and I spent a day touring the Verdun Battlefields with a fantastic tour guide named Ingrid Ferrand. She is trilingual (English, French, German) and provided a very interesting perspective to the battlefields, being a native German who has lived in the Verdun area for 30+ years. We visited Fort Douamont, the Ossuarry, the Trench of Bayonets and Fleury, one of the lost villages. After lunch we visited the St Mihiel salient. It was a great way to see and learn about this historic place.
