Plan Ahead for Tour of Mistaken Point
Aug. 2019
Stunning Vistas - the place feels ancient. Plan ahead and book a guide to see fossils at Mistaken Point. Drive slowly to the Cape Race lighthouse, take a deep breath, so beautiful.

Great place to call in and get a feel for the area. The receptionist was very helpful and Tony definitely gave us a few local tips!

Wonderful History!

Don’t miss this great museum and archeological site while visiting Ferryland NL. It provides a good glimpse into the past of the history of Newfoundland. Pay the extra fee and visit the 17 century kitchen while there to see what’s cooking.

We visited the Edge of Avalon Interpretive Centre before taking the hike out to Mistaken Point to view the fossils. The hike isn't for the faint of heart, but well worth it once you are standing near the fossils. Very informative guide. It was very foggy and cold the day we hiked, so would recommend warm clothing and water proof boots if you are taking the fossil hike.

A treasure that all must see and experience
Jul. 2018
Travelling to the Edge of Avalon in Portugal Cove South is a beautiful experience. The landscape transition is my favorite part of driving down to Portugal Cove South to take in the Guided Mistaken Point tour.

It is a very busy place with limited access so when you book your plane ticket/travel to NL also book your guided tour of the Fossils at Mistaken Point. The trail is long and not something that people with hip or knee challenges should take on. Walking poles can be helpful on the trail. You may get wet, as there is a river to cross and you'll have to partake in a childhood favorite of hopping rocks.

Once you reach the fossils the magic begins. It can be windy and much cooler at the fossil site from where you parked your car at the trail head. Oh and most important the hike does not start at the Interpretation centre in Portugal Cove South, it starts at a trail head about a 15-20 minute drive from the interpretation centre. Wear good hiking shoes, crocs and flip flops will be denied by the tour guides.

A must see when you travel the Irish Loop in NL. It is a long drive from St. John's so plan for the event to be a full day excursion.

Informative

Before making the trek to the Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve, individuals are asked to meet at the Centre roughly 30 minutes before, around 12:30. It's a great spot to stop and ask questions, use the washroom, and grab a sweater!

Interesting and great staff

We were pleased to talk to staff/ scientists about the displays, and about Mistaken Point. We called ahead, because the book says they were closed for the season (end of October) and the main operation was closed. Because we called ahead, we were invited to look at the displays.

The Edge of Avalon Interpretive Centre is a located on the Irish Loop, Route 10 near Trepassey on the Avalon Peninsula. My wife and I had completed a cross country road trip in August 2017 and I returned in September to drive the few scenic routes I had missed. This Centre provides a wealth of informative displays and includes a really good gift shop. Centre will be appreciated by those interested in nature, local culture and spectacular scenery and by those who like driving off the beaten path.

Plan to spend a whole day here
Aug. 2017 • Solo
The fossil hike across the seaside barrens was great . It seems like a lot of people at first, but the crowd thins out quickly, and you will get to spend all the time you want with the fossils. Be sure to book this hike well in advance; and if you can combine it with their birdwatching hike, it makes for a great day. At lunchtime I visited the Cape Race lighthouse and learned some of the local history about the Titanic. Be sure to stop by their small store.

A Must do When Visiting the Area: Edge of Avalon Interpretive Centre
Jul. 2017 • Couples
We began our tour of the area at Edge of Avalon Interpretive Centre. Friendly informative staff, displays and three videos were available to provided us with an overview of the area and its history assisted on planing our exploration.

We met our dedicated guide Richard Thomas here prior to our Bird Watching and Geography tour and Our amiable guide Louie (sorry if misspelled) for a Geology fossil tour of Mistaken Point (I will speak more about this tour in my Mistaken Point review). Make reservations in advance for guided tours to avoid disappointment.

Clean bathrooms and a nice gift shop made for a pleasant visit.
