Medieval fortress built in the 14th century in Moldavia during the reign of Petru I of Moldavia and expanded in the 15th century, which resisted the Hungarians and Turks and was only conquered by the Poles in 1691. Entrance fee 24 lei for adults, 12 lei for students. It can be reached with a 20/25 minute uphill walk, the car should be left at the foot of the hill along the road, hoping to find a place.

The citadel of Tirgu Neamt -known as the "Cetatea Neamtului". Built by Teutonic knights of Barsa who were sent to fortify the passes of the Carpathians to offer some protection from the innovations from the east, all this according to some historians around 1211-1225 - however the excavations on the premises din not find any proof related to the Teutonic ancestry the style of the fortress is undoubtedly that of the Hohenstaufen German imperial military architecture. Still the proof to support these is to be found. Excavations did not present any relic older than late 1300 ... so it might be a myth it might be lost in the tides of time ...
Today it is a tourist attraction and a must see - from my perspective .
So be prepared to leave your car in the parking lot at the feet of the hill - parking for the day is pocket friendly 10 Ron - about 2 euros- and the fee is collected on premises.
Prepare for a steep climb - short but steep - trough the woods on an asphalt road and the entry ticket you will get at the beginning of the bridge you need to cross to enter the fortress.
The fortress is fairly small but interesting - nicely prepared rooms await the visitor with description of the items - still majority are in Romanian so for the foreign visitor it will be a bit challenging.
Overall a very good experience , if you are in the area I would say a must do for anybody who is into history - or for anybody who is looking for a lesson in history - with a bit of workout from the climb to the citadel.
Go, see and enjoy

A great Castle with a scary bridge which brings you inside. Ther you can find important fragments of the rich history of this part of Romania. When you climb on the walls you can get a beautiful view over the valley.

This place is spectacular!! It is well preserved and absolutely beautiful!! Here are some things to consider when visiting... Parking is very limited, so early morning when the place opens is your best bet. It is a long and steep walk up to the fortress, so wear good walking shoes, and pick a cool weather day if possible. It is a bit of a walk up the hill (about 15-30 min depending on how fast you can go). Making the ascend in the middle of summer will be very hot. The narrow road is paved and well kept, but there is no public transport to take you up the hill. This is a well kept place well worth the price of admission! We loved it!!

From the beginning you have to know that to get to the citadel you have to walk half mile on a slope with an elevation around 1000 feet. Not for ones with heart problems. On the top you will see one of the most beautiful citadels in the country recent restored.
It was built in 14th century Moldavia during Petru I of Moldavia's reign and expanded in the 15th century. The citadel played a key role in Stephen III of Moldavia's defense system, along with Suceava, Hotin, Soroca, Orhei, Tighina, Chilia and Cetatea Albă.

A LOT of EU money has been spent on the reconstruction of this castle. As the aim was to make the fortress attractive to foreign tourists wouldn't you think they'd have SOME interpretation in English, French or German? After all, how many of these foreign tourists will known Romanian?
So, plenty of notices in Romanian . One in English. Nothing else. No guidebooks available at the ticket office either . I really think the EU should be spending its money more carefully.
It is spectacular. But also vastly over-restored.

This is a renovated medieval fortress. It was burned down at the end of 17th century and let to go down in ruin. It is nicely renovated as a museum and has great exhibits. Interesting to learn more about medieval history and architecture in this part of Europe. Beautiful views too!

Unfortunately, all the description here is in Romanian, and I could not appreciate this place more than its already established historic value. This place was rebuilt and I was not able to differentiate what is the original. If I could read Romanian, maybe I could be more informed. Regardless, Google is available. Photography fee is required.
