Newlyn Art Gallery is a contemporary art gallery located in Newlyn, Cornwall. Opened in 1895, and financed by John Passmore Edwards the gallery was conceived as a home and exhibition venue for the Newlyn School of Art the works of which are now largely located at Penlee House Gallery and Museum in nearby Penzance. For almost 120 years, Newlyn Art Gallery has been bringing the best in contemporary art to audiences in the south west. In 2007 the gallery was redeveloped and we opened a second venue, The Exchange in Penzance. With two venues we are able to offer a wide and varied programme across two sites, showcasing the very best of national and international contemporary art, as well as work by some of the best artists currently working in the region. Newlyn has played an important role in supporting the development of 20th-century painting in Britain, and in acknowledgement of that history, our current programme seeks to reflect the ways in which contemporary artists, working in this country and internationally, use painting and drawing to express their ideas. The focus at Newlyn Art Gallery is on painting and drawing. Artists working in other media continue to be a part of the programme on occasions, but two-dimensional work is the clear focus. Recent shows have included major retrospectives by Roger Hilton and Breon O'Casey. At Newlyn Art Gallery, the pavilion on the seaward side of the gallery is a glass structure on ground floor level, which supports a first floor clad in wet-laid Cornish slate, a building method specific to the region, but rarely seen in modern buildings. The glass curtain wall allows panoramic views of Newlyn Green and the sea while sliding doors lead to a secluded garden and outdoor seating area. The Picture Room space shows changing exhibitions of works for sale. With an emphasis on affordable works, it offers the opportunity to buy paintings, prints and drawings by some of the region's most recognised artists. All profits from sales made in The Picture Room directly support the Gallery's education and exhibition activities. The Education Room & Studio Cafe on the first floor of the pavilion has a vast window offering panoramic views across Mounts Bay, as well as a skylight the length of the gabled ceiling. Well-behaved dogs are very welcome. We are a dog-friendly venue.

A small gallery showing local artists. Stunning sea views from the cafe, and activities to get all ages involved. Plenty in the shop too. Very much worth the small fee of £2 to visit.

A variety of art can be found at the Newlyn Art Gallery. Upcoming artists exhibiting in a great building, small but beautifully formed. Very well curated. The sound of change is apt for the building. All 5 senses were tapped in to with fresh paint...More

Honestly we didn't enjoy much of the place. We went to the Exchange, and it was way too modern for our taste. The tickets include tickets to Newlyn Art Gallery, so we thought we paid it a visit while we're there. But there's nothing much...More

Nothing much go see - which was disappointing. They seemed more interested in us using the shop and cafe.

We visited this amazing art space today in Newlyn. Great use of space and fusion of old and new architecture - fantastic sea views particularly from the 1st floor cafe - an interesting art exhibition too!

We have visited Newlyn Art Gallery many times and really enjoyed it. We had parked the car in Penzance and walked up the high street, down through Morrab Gardens and along Penzance promenade to the gallery. Quite a walk. So when we arrived we were...More

We visited the current exhibition 'What is this place?' I came away still asking the question. Looking for guidance and enlightenment, which I could not glean from studying the works on show, I read the blurb which was handed to me by the assistant in...More

Visited the Tate the day before, but enjoyed the art at newlyn much more. You get joint entry to the Exchange gallery in Penzance too.

I have wanted to come here for years and, in fairness, one of the galleries was closed so this review only covers the one with the cafe. If I am funding this through my taxes I am appalled. The Art was generally of a poor...More

We walked along the front to the gallery. The exhibition was disappointing on the whole. The cafe only served drinks and cakes. The shop was interesting, however.
