I live in Tutukaka and this tree is a half hour walk from our house, so about once a week we walk from here up to the tree and through to the Salt Air Cafe for breakfast. This takes us about 1 and 3/4 hours. The track is well marked with orange arrows ,but at times the track becomes overgrown... More

We went for our walk to Tane Moana from the Ngunguru end of the Matapouri track. We did not go for the complete walk as we didn't have time.. Started uphill over some farmland and stiles, through a newly planted pine plantation and then through some beautiful native forest. We walked solidly for about half and hour, mainly uphill, to... Its well worth the walk, and while there are not a lot of viewpoints along the track this is a great coastal walk.

Also annoying was that the maps at both ends of the track did not show where the mythical tree was. So a very frustrating experience on a hot day. The useless guidebook from the iSite in Whangarei said... More

It's a very nice peaceful walk through the forest to find this ancient giant. I didn't see another person.

Nice walk via forest and worth a try. Most enjoyable walk and forests are full of birdlife. Recommend that you use a vehicle pick up at the other end if a bit unfit or very hot day.
