It's necessary to go down a road that is very slow and probably very difficult in the rainy season (we were there in the dry season). The challenging bit of road is not too long, so it's not too bad. The ruin is definitely worth...More

Three excavated buildings but other jungle covered mounds everywhere. 2/3 buildings are quite cool. Admission is free, nobody else there. You need to drive about 2kms down a jungle shrouded 'trail', past the bajo and nature trail parking area to the dead end, the rest...More

Hormiguero is very small – really only two excavated structures. It was definitely worth the trip, however. Both structures have a couple of the nicest facades I've seen in the area. The site was free when I was there, and there were no other visitors....More

If you are not in a hurry to go to Calakmul, try to make it to El Hormiguero. The site is so dramatic and fascinating that it is totally worth the efforts to get there. The monster mouth entrance alone will make you wonder why...More

Since this site is located approximately five hours from Campeche City, it should be listed as a Xpuhil attraction or an Escarcega attraction.

These are fantastically decorated friezes depicting Itzamna, the terrible Mayan god, Monster of the Earth...A door represents its mouth, and the upper friezes represent its eyes...More

On October 2012 we contacted Nicolas of Ka'an Expeditions to take us to visit the ruins of Calakmul. On this occasion, march 2014, he took us to Hormiguero. I was expecting some stylized archeological ruins, some high towers and maybe a pyramid. We saw a...More

The Chenes style monster mouth doorway is what you visit this site to see. This is one of the most impressive buildings that you will see in the area. There is nothing like this at Calakmul. The site is a little off the beaten path,...More

The location is a bit removed, and the site itself isn't very large. However, the architecture and stonework are extraordinary, and the Earthmonster gateway is a jewel. Well worth going out of your way to see these ruins.

Another great Mayan ruin you will enjoy seeing. If you like Mayan ruins, you will love this nice medium sized ruin, too. We haven't missed any of the Chen/Rio Bec Mayan ruins. Enjoy ! Skippyfrizz
