After watching numerous of the WW-2 movies about Corregidor "Cry Havoc", and "They were Expendable" with John Wayne; I decided to make a visit to the Island of Corregidor in June 2019. My interest was seeing the island where history was made and the neighboring Bataan Peninsula. I had certain places that I wanted to see on the island. The ferry from Manila docked at Corregidor at the north dock. This is the exact dock that Lt JG John Bulkeley on PT-41 transported Gen Douglas MacArthur and his family to Mindanao in 1942. The dock is constructed of concrete with rebar and you can see where it has been repaired numerous times from the war damage of both sides. But, I wanted to walk to the end of it slowly and look back at the island to see what Gen MacArthur must have seen and felt when he stepped onto the PT boat. From the end of the dock you can see Cavite and Mariveles. The trams that give the tour are rapid paced so I was unable to spend much time near the islands north dock. My next point of interest was the Malinta Tunnel east entrance. Good tour but the tunnel is darkened for the video effects and many tripping hazards from old rail tracks down the middle. If you tour try to be near the front so you can hear the tour guide. My interest from the 3rd tunnel lateral on the north side from the east entrance. This was the Headquarters lateral for MacArthur and Gen Wainwright. Several of the Laterals have life-sized people and scenes to exhibit the events of the time. The experience is heighten by the flash and thunder of simulated bomb explosions, the soft hushed murmurs of people talking. Wish I had more time in the tunnel itself, but it is a tour in and out . Lunch for the tour was on the Islands only hotel, it was very very hot day the restaurant and loads of cold water and a buffet type food After I attempted to follow the Bataan Death March route from Mariveles back to Angeles City, it is not well marked and the road is under reconstruction. I want to go back and attempt that route after doing more research and putting some Lat's and Longs into my Garmin. "When I return", I want to spend a night on the islands hotel and see in more detail what is called TOPSIDE. This place was on my bucket list and it was emotional to walk where the US soldiers were from December 1941 till March 1942. The tour guide had excellent knowledge of the island and the period in history that I was interested in.

When you visit Corregidor Island, this is one of the most important places you will get to tour in. Both day tour and overnight tours c/o Sun Cruises include the Malinta Tunnel in the itineraries. However I don't think you would enjoy this without a guide telling you stories behind everything you see. Private touring (ex. you have a yacht and you decide to visit Corregidor on your own) won't be as fun and insightful.

Since I availed of a Sun Cruises overnight tour, I got the privilege to discover the many wonders of the tunnel. A day tour of Corregidor will only include the Lights and Sounds show inside the tunnel which isn't enough. You will only walk through the main path which will take 30 mins because of the show. Unlike when you're an overnighter, you can get the Lateral night tour package (Php 250 including sunset and sunrise viewing, short hike to a Japanes tunnel trail) where they will take you into the inside of the Laterals and the 1000-bed hospital. Can't believe so many things took place inside it, you HAVE to listen to every word your tour guide says to appreciate it as it can get pretty creepy when you draw your attention to how dark and quiet it is.

When touring the Malinta Tunnel at night, make sure you wear shoes (sneakers or rubber shoes would be best) because it can get slippery and rocky in some parts of the tunnel. They will provide helmets and flash lights so no need to bring your own.

Re: the Malinta Tunnel Lights and Sounds Show, I suggest they fix the sounds so we could better understand it. It could have been so cool if what the tourists hear is loud and clear.

It was a great experience. History was very alive in this place and no matter how creepy it got especially when we went inside the hospital, it was a tour I didn't regret. I learned so much about WWII and got to relive it for a short period of time. It made me appreciate the brave men who fought for our country and the freedom that we now without foreign oppressors even more.

The Malinta Tunnel is the “Heart Of Corregidor”. If I had to pick only one area to see on all Of Corregidor Island, the Malinta Tunnel would be my choice.

If you just stop for a minute...to imagine the sheer terror and sacrifice of the humans that endured and died in this tunnel system, it’s unconscionable.

How blessed we were to grow up in a “Free America” and to be the offspring of “America’s Greatest Generation”.

We owe that precious debt of freedom to our Mothers and Fathers.... who fought and sacrificed everything....to give us....their children, the life our parents never knew.

My life’s journey has now brought me to the Phillipines, in search of those “Old Stories” that I have heard retold by my parents....and the heroic parents of my childhood friends.

Nothing.....I had heard during my childhood days, could have prepared me for today.....in understanding the sacrifices they made during WWII.

Our parents purposely spared us, from the grisly details of the horrific atrocities and horror of war....they witnessed.

The Malinta Tunnel Tour does not “Candy Coat” the real stories of war.

Life is a journey.....and the journey continues.

The tunnel show offers a decently unbiased report of the heroism and courage displayed during the siege.

The tunnel is a testament to human ingenuity, built inside a mountain at a time when construction of any magnitude was unheard of or rarely done. This tunnel provided protection for more than 16,000 people (soldiers, civilians and families) during the Japanese invasion of the Philippine Islands. This is where the then President of the Philippines Manuel Quezon sought refuge together with General Douglas MacArthur and his men. The tunnel provided solid protection for them until they were overpowered by a mass of Japanese soldiers. The Light and Sound Show in the tunnel gave us a sense of what must have happened that day in 1941. Located in the uninhabited (except for the employees) Corregidor Island of the Philippines it is a testament to human ingenuity and the site of so much bloodshed in World War II. It made me feel humbled and thankful for my freedoms because of the sacrifices of these brave men in uniform, Americans and Pilipinos alike.

There are two tours for Malinta tunnel. One is the Lights and Sound show that comes with the day tour, and the other is the Night Lateral Tour.
My only complaint with the Lights and Sound show is that most of the tour groups I've been with are more interested in getting photos than listening and understanding the history that is being told by the show.
Which is why I would recommend the Night Lateral tour as you would go inside the tunnels and see more of this historical tunnel.

I love history and have family who has fought in wars, both me and my husband. It is important to both of us to know the history of what happened. What a great tour you can go on of the Island and get a perspective of what actually happened on that island. The tour gave me chills at times. If you have appreciation for WWII history, Corregidor Island is a must see on your to do list to see what happened of the war of the pacific and MacAurther's return. If you have children and family there is restaurnantss and fun things to do all over the island as well. You should visit their actual sight. You can stay over night. It is so much fun and relaxing! The meal we had their at the main hall was delicious. If you just go for a stroll you will see the monkeys walking around and they are friendly to you! Keep a banana in your pocket, you can feed them. What a great experience!

The lights and sound show during the day tour was extremely boring. See, the set up was great, and it can be really great, but it just wasn't. It was basically a film showing activity. You walk a few steps, stop at the line, watch a short film with really poor audio and video quality, and repeat the process until you get to the end of the tunnel.

For 200 pesos per person, it's not worth it.

For 200 pesos, i can say that it needs a little improvement especially that the tunnel is dark and not inside.. Be sure to bring water and fan inside..

Nevertheless, the experience is somehow worth it as the tunnel show gives you a glimpse of what transpired during that time.
