Even if the lake is artificially created as a reservoir, it is very nicely inserted into the magnificent mountain landscape. You can also swim and surf in summer and relax by the water. There are also beautiful hiking trails on the shore and in the surrounding area.

Found some cliffs perfect for jumping off of near a pull out on the highway. This is the address: Rastplatz Sylvensteinsee, 83661 Lenggries, Germany. Find the creek that runs down the bank and follow it to the lake. To your left will be cliffs into the water ranging from about 10 to 30 feet high. I believe the water is quite deep but always depth check first.

This artificial lake was built back in 1954 -1958 to collect water from Isar river and prevent flooding, therefore, it is not very popular as a touristic attraction. It is also little bit far south of the Bavarian metropole lying close to the Austrian boarder about 90 min drive from Munich center. It was not a planned trip to the lake as we were heading to the beautiful Eng Alm Valley in Tirol nearby, however, once we reached the bridge on top of the dam which separates the two lakes (Sylvensteinsee and Sylvensteinstausee) we made a stop to enjoy the spectacular view down to the lake and up to the Karwendel Alps hills as well. A patter of rain and foggy weather present at the time of our arrival did not affect the view of nature beauty and feeling of freshness. Allegedly, this place is well known in Bavaria as locals travel to Sylvensteinsee in the summer time for swimming or hiking.
