This was my first trip south of the equator. I was doing service work nearby and visited the Observatorio Cruz del Sur on the winter solstice. Viewing the southern night sky with the absence of light pollution was breathtaking. We also saw star clusters, "shooting stars" and Saturn. The observatory is working to be more accessible to English-Speaking tourists. The... More

The observatory is a bit off the beaten path but definitely worth the effort. I had an excellent experience from start to finish and would do it again. Actually, my friends and I went on several tours since I could not get enough of the sky and looking through the powerful telescope. The city is charming and tickets can be... More

Going to this observatory is a great experience for adults and children. The best experience is at night, because they also offer tours during the day. After watching an explanatory movie we went outside and we received and educational talk. Then we went to watch the stars and planets through a telescope. I don't know if they have services in... We visited the observatory in january 2015 and had an excellent experience. The small office in town arranged a local translator for us free of charge to translate the guided tour in Spanish into English. However, we didn't get the impression that this is a regular service provided, so we might have been extra lucky in that sense. That being... More

We had a good visit to the observatory - but due to our limited Spanish we didn't get as much out of it as all the Spanish speakers. This was no fault of the observatory. The evening starts when the doors open at 9 pm. This is what our ticket said - but nothing happens until 9.30. There is a... More

Unlike the big, university and consortium-run observatories to the north (themselves certainly worth a visit-if you can), you actually get to use a telescope. The nice, young guide was also the first to really explain to me how to use the Southern Cross!

Cruz del Sur was the third observatory that we visited in our Chilean travel and It was the best. A really good video about the astronomy, a really interesting view of the sky. A really good experience, also because there are not so many tourist and you can have a better experience than in Mamalluca.
