The artwork of real locals who worked at this cement works is worth a visit. The sheer size of this is a marvel!

The Foundations Portland gets its name from the Portland Cement ‘upon which Sydney was built’. The cement works now defunct, the town is now quiet. But take a closer look. The silos have been painted with portraits of local workers by the revered muralist and silo artist, Guido van Helten, as tribute to the people and character of this town. For me that was reason enough to take a short detour. But wait, there’s more - lots more! All over town the walls are enhanced with reproduced vintage advertisements hand-painted by sign writers from around the world. A fascinating detour off the A32 - and quite a find for this art fan!

Real Australia backdrop as the backdrop, stunning portrait silos of Portland’s working people, the backbone of this country town. A must see!

I camped out there in my caravan with 3 other couples on the long weekend. No power or showers but very clean amenities and open all the time. Artwork on silos is amazing. There was also a monthly farmers market on the Sunday with so many stalls.
We also did the guided tour of the old cement works with Herb, who used to work there. Very informative tour.
Can't wait to get back out there for the next event.

Our family visited the Portland site while Guido was painting the Silos. It was amazing to see his artistic abilities to paint something of that scale. We also did a tour of the grounds and learnt of Portland's history being the cement works that built Sydney. We free camped in the area too. Great history, great old buildings, great weekend.

Myself, my wife and our 5 young children did a car trip up to check out some of the artwork on the silos over the weekend.
Absolutely amazed at the detail. And the entire area just made us feel at peace. We later a blanket down and just took in the serenity.
Can’t wait to return.

I visited The Foundations during Ironfest on the weekend of 27th to 28th April 2024. Ironfest was being held at Portland for the first time. I hope that it isn't the last time. The owners and Management have done a wonderful job of preserving the integrity of the buildings. The Annexe is fantastic, the silos very well done, and the other buildings are fantastic for hosting large amounts of people. The buildings have such great character and the windows are simply stunning.

Great pop up cafe, and we were made to feel so welcome. A beautifully preserved space with a really interesting exhibition. Love the horse sculpture! I hope these guys do well, they deserve it.
