This is my third visit to Kitt Peak.
I love the views. I love the serenity. A peaceful sacred place on the mountain.
There was only one telescope open for the self directed tour this time which was a little disappointing.
On my last visit...More
This is a boring 1 hour drive from Tucson
During the day there is a visitor center with some exhibits- also a gift shop
There are tours which walk around the property- the telescopes to view the heavens are featured on the night tours only...More
We loved our "night progam" visit to Kitt Peak...the views of the desert on the way up are amazing and the road is very good with guard rails :)
Highly recommend....just remember winter temps and weather can make your visit a real adventure
Even though it was very cold at 7000 feet +, we really were amazed at the many stars and satellites which we could see through the telescopes and binoculars. The guides did an excellent job of explaining what we saw in the sky. It was...More
The website said that they were open to the public so we traveled (1.5 hrs) to this destination. Yes, the welcome center was open but the rest of the area was closed. All of the observatories were closed. We did walk around the area and...More

The drive out and up to the peak is beautiful and the views from the top are too! The docents were excellent. We took the last tour of the day but arrived early enough to walk around and got to view the sun through a...More
We are casual star gazers with little experience with telescopes. The chance to view the skies with high powered research equipment thrilled us. The drive from Tucson took little more than an hour with nice views going up the mountain. Being winter it was cold...More

I drove down at night with my headlights taped after the night observation program. I was in my RV - so there was a bit of heightened awareness while driving the mile until we could remove the tape from our headlights.
Personally, I think driving on the 1 in CA is more anxiety producing. The mountain road to the observatory has very little traffic.
From what I recall there were only a few spots on the road that had steep drop offs.
Perhaps see if you can find a video of the drive and see if it would be manageable for you.
