This was an outstanding trip. We have done multiple bike tours in Europe, and this was just as fun in its own way. We are already thinking about a return to Nicaragua. Harold was a great guide and road companion. He is so mellow, but he also kept us on track and expertly handled all unexpected contingencies. He had personal relationships with locals through the route and even went out his way to help other stranded or lost travelers several times. He found ways to make the tour unique, and always deferred to our requests regarding things like where to eat, what side trips to make, where to buy things, and so on. For example my wife wanted to eat maduro plantains with nearly every meal, so Harold told our horseback ride guide. Sheand took us on horse back to a local lady’s house to buy a large bunch. Then Harold convinced the staff at Omaja to cook them with every meal we had there. Needless to say, my wife was very pleased. Another time, we were looking for a souvenir map, but couldn’t find one we liked. On his own time, and without our asking, Harold went shopping, located the perfect map, and surprised us with it. When we asked Harold if there were any hot springs in Nicaragua, he took us to a beautiful and secluded one a few miles off the planned route, where we had a great very relaxing soak. When Harold spotted a woman frying pork skins in her yard, he brought us to a stop so we could watch her technique. After getting a taste of the skins, we ended up spending an hour with the woman and her children singing folk songs! Finally Harold is serious about sunsets... He did everything in his power to make sure we were always in the perfect spot when they occurred! We loved the food, the turtles, the dogs, the pigs, the horses, the monkeys, the chickens, the cows, the grasshoppers, the fireflies, the children, the waterfall, kayaking, visiting the fish market to pick out our dinners, and so much more. We have been all over the world, and this was one of our best vacations, ever.

My husband and I did a 7-day tour with our 14 year old daughter, and Harold was the most excellent guide, teacher and ambassador! All communication with the company was prompt, thorough, and clear. We were met by a rep who showed us around Granada and helped us orient ourselves and prepare for the cycling trip ahead. The selected hotels were just right - clean, comfortable amenities, quiet, authentic, etc. We were visiting during a hot season, and we rose early to bike (some shorter and some longer days) so by the time the afternoon heat kicked in, we were in a hammock with a beer or batido. Thank you to Backpackers on Bikes for organizing such a great trip!

We thoroughly enjoyed our adventure and really appreciated the time and effort Mark and Julie put in to making everything run smoothly! Harold, our guide, was an absolutely joy and perfect guide…we could not have asked for anyone better. He was kind, informative, patient, funny, pretty much everything rolled into one ;) Everyday was unique and different. Biking, monkeys, beaches, turtles, volcanoes, surfing, kayaking and so much more. We would highly recommend!

We had a great time and I would use the services of Backpackers on Bikes again. Prior to the trip my emails were answered promptly and thoroughly. We did a self guided trip and the route explanations and GPS were easy to follow. The hotels and locations chosen were a great cross section of that part of the country. They even gave us a guide for the first two days as they said there were so many turns. Our guide Harold was great and added so much to the time we spend with him. The only thing that keeps me from giving a five was the condition of the bicycles. Granted, the roads here do eat the bikes alive but we had undue trouble with one of the bikes. I think Julie and Mark are working with the local mechanic to bring a higher level of maintenance. Three out of four bikes worked fine even if they had seen a lot of use. If you are really picky about the bike you ride, you might want to bring your own. I am moderately picky and was fine with the one I had. I can highly recommend this trip.

Backpackers on Bikes owners Mark and Julie are top notch! My fiance and I did a 1/2 day tour with Mark through Granada villages and ended 1 mile from Laguna de Apoyo (we went to Laguna Beach Club after). We biked up and down hills, through the streets of the people of Nica for about 3 hours. My significant other is in tip-top shape, me on the other hand not as much. Mark kept me motivated with great conversation and a speed in which was fast but not too fast that I wanted to give up. My fiance was able to handle the hills no and he commented that he had a great workout throughout the entire trip. I only was able to get up 3 of the 5 or 6 hills and Mark stayed behind with me and even walked my bike up the hills for me. My fiance other and I agreed our tour was intermediate level but Mark will tailor it to your level The tour was totally worth the time and energy and was nice to see Nica the people, sites smells, nature, sounds and personality of Nica up-close and personnel while getting some exercise and have great convo with Mark! Mark and Julie met us at our hotel with the bikes and helmets (that were in great condition!) and we were on our way. They also arranged a driver to pick us and the bikes up at Laguna Beach Club at ur leisure, which was much appreciated as the Lake/Laguna is beautiful and the Beach Club was a perfect way to unwind after the bike ride workout! The service, activities and surroundings were excellent at the Beach Club and I recommend going. The driver Mark and Julie arranged was very hospitable and professional as well. We couldn't have asked for a better bike tour; I'm so glad we booked with them and highly recommend this tour company to anyone else!! We also had the pleasure of hanging out with Mark and Julie in SJDS. We thoroughly enjoyed learning more about them and their friends experience traveling the world and living in Nica. Mark and Julie are warm and friendly people who helped to make our trip to Nica truly unforgettable We wish them nothing but the best with this one of a kind tour company! Cheers to life, new friends, biking and living your dream : ) All the best, ~Sam & Mark
