Dear Le Petite Chef

When I made aware of your visit to Durban I immediately jumped at the opportunity to attend your dining experience, having missed it years ago.

Fine dining is a passion of mines and the options in Durban are very few.

But alas the disappointment was overwhelming.

The experience has been described on your website as “ Au Naturel, is a mind blowing, innovative, unique, internationally acclaimed gastronomic experience”

My mind was blown by the lack of flavor… Au Naturel …indeed!

Innovative / unique… it definitely was, we all paid to assemble our own meals.. Even cook the protein in act 5 and play with childish props.

Gastronomic experience… yes in that the pit of my tummy turned with disappointment act after act after act. I sat there looking at the McDonalds sign opposite the road, thinking if I’m gonna be wasting carbs etc I might as well have ordered a tasty grand spicy burger from McD.

Act 1 ..basically a deconstructed woolies salad with a dry pita bread..

Act 2 … deconstructed seafood soup.. 1 mussel, 1 tiny prawn, 2 calamari rings and a crumbling small piece of fish..severed with the chewy not crunchy bread stick and seawater flavored soup mixed with some spices.

Act 4…An Over seasoned petite piece of fish, 2 smaller than a pinky finger size langoustines, served with rice and an attempt at lemon butter cream sauce. I didn’t understand the whisk with the blob of tartare sauce we were asked to lick at the end of the meal 🤷‍♀️. I found myself wanting a proper meal from a Fishaways fast food takeout.

Act 4….. 3 ok tasting sticky chicken pieces (wings and drumets) served with unseasoned mash and veggies with something that was supposed to BBQ sauce but didn’t quite make it.

Act 5….lamb / beef to be cooked over some coal by oneself served with 2 slices of raw carrots and broccoli, 6 potatoes chips and a watery gravy…

Act 6 - Dessert…for some reason I had high hopes for this one….I mean..ice cream, meringue, chocolate sauce, some crumbs ..how hard could this be. Turns out pretty difficult. The flavorless crumbs was stale, the 3 berries reminded me of ones I find at the back of my fruit draw in my fridge when it’s been there for a while ….the chocolate sauce was stuck to plate, the meringue was melted mash mellows, the ice cream was good, the apple tart ..well..the ice was good!

The show itself .. points for the tech. No story line though… it became repetitive and didn’t speak to the food, the flavors one expected to have in the meal. In fact my light bulb moment was when I realized that for every act chef le petit with his clumsy ways destroyed every meal, so it explained the food I was actually being served. If this was the goal..then yes it was a success.

It was sad to hear people around me trying new things out in Dbn concluding the night as “it was different 😏 “ and “this is why we don’t do fine dining, pay for uncooked flavorless food.”

What’s even more disappointing is seeing the bad reviews on trip advisor from this year, with you acknowledging the feedback and stating it will be addressed, only it hasn’ been.

Merci Beaucoup Ashka We appreciate your long thought out opinions (excluding the childish sarcasm, however amusing and entertaining you think they are) and thank you for the detailed feedback - we consider it a gift, allowing us to improve. To correct you - we do not market our menu as 'fine dining' it is however FUN DINING. In our continued pursuit of perfection we will investigate to double check if all of what you say is fair, true and justified. I guess it's true what they say - try as you will, there is just no pleasing some people :-) For my sanity I will continue to believe and focus on the positive 5* feedback that we receive from the 99.99% of guests we have and continue to serve and the countless life long memories we have passionately and professionally delivered.. I believe that "if you haven't got anything nice to say - then don't say anything at all" and as such I will refrain from commenting further. I leave you with the following to think on ... “Mangez bien, riez souvent, aimez beaucoup"

The food was terrible and the service received at the Radisson in Umhlanga was not great. To pay for just a show is just not worth it. It is very overrated and they have totally missed the fact that the food should be the star. The show did not have substance and was highly boring there was no storyline or entertainment &
"ZERO WOW FACTOR". I even asked one of the staff members if there was anything more to the show. Their response was was "No , this is exactly what it is". I was rather disappointed. I won't recommend it to anyone ever.
A lot more could have been done to make the show exciting.
The story telling needs to improve drastically , it should have be a storytelling experience whereby the chef goes on an adventure and tells us a proper story.
There needs to be elements that can make the audience more engaged, whereby the audience participation is included.
More special effects and entertainment and food quality needs improvement.

The food was terrible and the service received at the Radisson in Umhlanga was not great. To pay for just a show is just not worth it. It's very commercialised and they missed the fact that the food should be the star. I was rather disappointed. I won't recommend it. The only thing French is the name.

Le Petit Au Naturel was most disappointing. Most certainly didn't live up to the Steps of Marco Polo at the Beverly Hill Umhlanga

The venue in which this was held had zero ambience and looked so drab. As for the service and meals - meals were cold and not flavorful. Dessert was an absolute ripper for a show /venue of 5-star accreditations. We were on a wine paring package the wine came as we finished each petit course. Was left feeling disappointed and embarrassed because i had raved so much about the show and got another couple to join us this being their first and last one, I'm most certain.

Bonjour Sharonn We are most disappointed to receive your feedback and would like to THANK YOU for bringing it to our attention. In our continual pursuit for perfection we wish we had known your concerns when our managers check-in at your table during the show. We could have addressed the issues immediately. Your concerns raised around the service levels have been addressed with the team. We have sent the feedback through to the Radisson Chefs and will ensure that we revisit the warmth and flavour aspect of each dish served. We would love to know your suggestions for the improvement of the dessert served, since it needs to mimic the projections and from the feedback received from numerous other satisfied guests - we though we had nailed it!! You are welcome to e-mail us.
